ABSTRACT Daniel Montello’s commentary on our article “Subjective Disorientation as a Metacognitive Feeling” raises many interesting points. In this response, we hope to show that what might at first seem like strong disagreements are for the most part minor issues and that the disagreements that remain are of the fruitful kind that encourage further discussion and research.

Subjective disorientation as a metacognitive feeling 主观定向障碍作为一种元认知感觉

ABSTRACT There is a large body of literature on disorientation, ranging from behavioral studies to the analysis of search and rescue operations. However, the subjective side of disorientation remains insufficiently explored and, as a result, there is no unified account of the phenomenon. A working characterization of disorientation is a first step in the direction of this unified account. Through the study of an array of subjective experiences of disorientation, we shall first distinguish between the objective condition of being lost and the subjective condition of disorientation. Our central claim is then that disorientation is a metacognitive feeling. Specifically, we claim that disorientation is a metacognitive feeling of low confidence in the subject’s online system of spatial representation.

Nearness as context-dependent expression: an integrative review of modeling, measurement and contextual properties 作为上下文相关表达的接近性:建模、测量和上下文属性的综合回顾

ABSTRACT Nearness expressions such as “near” are context-dependent spatial relations and are subject to the context variability effect. Depending on the provided context, “near” has a different semantic extension. We perform a literature review to identify the effect of context on “near”. To integrate the insights from different disciplines, we apply Turney’s contextualization framework which distinguishes between two types of features: primary and contextual. Primary features are the qualitative and quantitative distance measures and contextual features are the context factors used to determine a threshold on the nearness measurements. Additionally, we identify the appropriate features for different spatial tasks discussed in the literature. By doing so, we seek to build a foundation for a context-dependent model for “near”.

Identification of physical and visual enclosure of landscape space units with the help of point clouds 利用点云识别景观空间单元的物理和视觉围合

ABSTRACT Vertical enclosure is incapable of describing the permeation of landscape space enclosures. Physical and visual enclosures are identified to compensate for enclosure cognition inadequacies. Physical enclosures reflect the restriction of behavior, and visual enclosures embody the viewshed extension range. An identification method is proposed and implemented using point cloud data. Multiple enclosures are mapped, and the distribution of each enclosure is shown. Seven combinations are summarized based on the organization of vertical, physical, and visual enclosures. Four typical physical and visual enclosing modes are defined by the quadrant distribution of quantified enclosure features. From the identification to the distribution extraction and typical type identification, this research transforms descriptive enclosures into identifiable multiple enclosures that can be computed and quantified.

ABSTRACT In this commentary on Fernandez Velasco and Casati’s “Subjective Disorientation as a Metacognitive Feeling” in this journal, I take issue with their distinction between “the objective condition of being lost and the subjective condition of disorientation”. Instead, I argue that being lost is geographic disorientation, and in all cases, it depends on a person’s subjective awareness that they are uncertain about their location or proper course. This, in fact, provides a unified definition of geographic disorientation. In contrast, being objectively misplaced is misorientation instead of disorientation, and is conceptually, and often in practice, a distinct state of affairs.

ABSTRACT The bulk of the research in spatial reorientation has studied how visual cues guide behavior. This project aims to explore the role of auditory cues. Using a find-and-replace paradigm in a circular search space, blindfolded sighted participants were able to reorient successfully using only auditory landmarks, albeit with errors larger than those found in visual-based reorientation. Importantly, for the first time, it was found that people encoded an ambiguous cue in addition to the certain cue, even though it was unnecessary and insufficient for solving the task. Results are discussed in the context of the resistance to using auditory cues spontaneously and the theory of functional equivalence.

ABSTRACT Mirrored stimuli in chronometric mental rotation tests cannot be rotated into congruence and are typically discarded from analysis. We present a novel design using three figures such that congruence is achieved for all trials. For design construction, we consider the geometrical properties of rotation and mirroring. We have experimentally tested the approach with forty-one German sport students. Results analyzed with linear mixed modeling show small differences but are comparable to the classical two-figure design. Based on our findings we suggest our new layout for future chronometric mental rotation. This will improve analysis of accuracies while increasing power. Moreover, we present a database of cube figures and code for flexible generation of stimuli, which we make available on GitHub at https://github.com/LeonardoJost/MRlibrary.

ABSTRACT Using Space Syntax techniques, we examined the relationship between environmental properties and spatial memory following navigation in a virtual environment. Participants navigated two main routes as well as two connector routes, memorizing landmark locations in the main routes. Memory was then examined through a pointing task and a model-building task. Participants pointed more accurately to locations of higher axial connectivity, integration, and choice, but pointed less accurately from those locations. Converging results were obtained with measures of visual connectivity, integration, and through vision. The findings suggest that environmental properties – including connectivity and integration, the locations’ intervisibility, and their grouping on the route type (same vs. different) – account well for the way spatial information is stored in and retrieved from memory.

Participants navigated two main routes as well as two connector routes, memorizing landmark locations in the main routes. Memory was then examined through a pointing task and a model-building task. Participants pointed more accurately to locations of higher axial connectivity, integration, and choice, but pointed less accurately from those locations. Converging results were obtained with measures of visual connectivity, integration, and through vision. Place facets: a systematic literature review 地方方面:系统的文献综述

ABSTRACT Place is a central concept in geography and a topic of interest in the social sciences, urban planning, architecture, and most recently in information science. The notion of place has therefore been studied with different foci of interest. Consequently, heterogeneous terminologies, conceptualizations, models, and ontologies have been proposed to capture this elusive concept. Yet these studies complement each other. Utilizing the concept of place facet as a particular type of information about place, in this review paper we bridge these multidisciplinary studies about place. We collect the different facets of place introduced in the literature and synthesize place characteristics by categorizing the identified facets. Finally, we discuss future directions for place-related research.
