ABSTRACT Educational disruptions during COVID-19 in periods of lockdown have redirected attention to homes and parents as key partners in schooling. Educational literature explores multidimensional disadvantages faced by communities in England. COVID-associated school closures changed the relationship between school and home. Parents and family played an important role to provide support for their children’s education. There is little reflection on the experiences of parenting during this time of uncertainty. The paper focuses on the parenting experiences of Bangladeshi and Pakistani families with GCSE years children (years 7-11) in supporting their children’s education during periods of abrupt school closures. Qualitative data were collected during the third national lockdown from 19-families in England using semi-structured narrative interviews. We find that most of the parents were largely satisfied with the support provided through schools. However, resources were unevenly distributed, and the learning experience was non-interactive for many children. Parental anxiety for their children’s futures and education was high. Nevertheless, families adopted diverse strategies to support their children by taking a more active role in providing educational as well as socio-emotional support. Notable in these accounts were significant reflections from parents, who regardless of the adversities, experienced a strengthening of the family as a unit.

Taking turns: lesbian couples’ decision of (first) birth mother in Sweden

ABSTRACT This article presents an analysis of how lesbian couples in Sweden negotiate birth motherhood in a context where equality is thought to be achieved by being and doing the same [Gullestad, M. (2002). Invisible fences: Egalitarianism, nationalism and racism. Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, 8(1), 45–63. https://doi.org/10.1111/1467-9655.00098]. We do so by studying narratives of how 20 couples arrived at the decision of who will be the (first) birth mother, a decision unique to a small group of parents with theoretical implications for motherhood norms, kinship and within-couple decision-making extending beyond the couples themselves. Most couples interviewed planned to have two children and take turns carrying, a plan that to some extent solves the challenge of equality and sameness. Genetic links were downplayed and instead, the embodied and often desired experience of pregnancy was foregrounded. In deciding who would be the (first) birth mother, the couples’ reasoning centred on age and desire, both presented as harmless and ‘natural’ determinants that defused a potentially disruptive decision.
https://doi.org/10.1111/1467 - 9655.00098)。

ABSTRACT The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) mandated schools engage parents in their child’s educational planning. Despite schools’ adoption of various strategies to promote parent engagement, parents’ perceptions about these strategies, especially among those whose children are at the secondary transition age, are often overlooked. To examine parents’ perceptions of 23 previously documented parent engagement strategies, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey with 642 parents of youth with disabilities (ages 14–21) in the United States. Overall, participants reported that parent engagement strategies were moderately helpful in promoting parent engagement. Parents of color reported lower scores for perceived helpfulness than their non-Hispanic White counterparts. Top-rated strategies included making time when parents have questions and communicating strategies clearly; however, this varied by race/ethnicity. Findings highlighted the need to address racial disparities in parent engagement strategies and the importance of school-parent collaboration/communication.

ABSTRACT Little is known about the parenting experiences of mothers with trans young adults. Here, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 15 Israeli mothers of trans young adults (average age: 21.26) to examine their parenting experiences in terms of the motherly love concept. The mothers described their experiences under the motherly love concept, encompassing unconditional love, protection and self-sacrifice. The mothers presented how their interpersonal relations with their trans children developed through the axis of birth-loss-rebirth, which enhanced their emotional ties with their children. The mothers also described their involvement in social activism as an expression of devoted motherhood that articulated the motherly love concept. The mothers’ parenting experiences were simultaneously similar to, and different from, the motherly love concept, encompassing its essentialist and relational aspects alongside its subversive and socio-political elements.

ABSTRACT The birth of the first child is a period of transformation and adjustments for the whole family system which results in dynamics that influence its development and tend to remain stable during the child's first years of life. The present study sought to identify the impact of the social and health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on the construction of coparenting in first-time parental couples. To determine the evolution of the dynamics of caregiving tasks, we employed a qualitative and longitudinal methodology in our study of 12 heterosexual couples of legal age who co-resided in Santiago de Chile. The main impact of the social-health crisis was the novel opportunity for the triad to spend the first year of life of the baby in the same space, which is interpreted positively by the parental couple. Even though there persist some traditional representations and beliefs that portray mothers as experts in upbringing, the pandemic context has made it possible to problematize this view, in a process that can be interpreted as a transition toward equitableness.

ABSTRACT Several studies and theoretical perspectives have examined the experience of raising a child with a disability. However, many of these studies and perspectives have not provided a comprehensive framework of the parenting process grounded in the perspectives of the parents themselves. In this qualitative study of 20 mothers and fathers (10 mother-father dyads) of children with disabilities (CWD), we conducted individual in-depth interviews investigating their parenting practices and experiences. Using open, axial, and selective coding procedures, we identified six main categories of responses including life history, child characteristics, worry and stress, formal social support, informal social support, and parenting behaviours. We propose a conceptual model which aims to illustrate the complex and nuanced nature of parenting CWD that is also broad enough to be applied in a variety of circumstances. We discuss the implications of this study in terms of research on families of CWD and the education and interventions available to them.

ABSTRACT This study explores how middle-class migrant East Asian mothers approach their children’s education in England, where educational culture is perceived to be considerably different from East Asia. Based on dichotomous perceptions about East Asian and English education cultures, dialectical perspectives were used to analyse the life history interview data, particularly four dialectical frameworks developed by [Baxter, L.A. (1990). Dialectical contradictions in relationship development. Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 7, 69–88. https://doi.org/10.1177/0265407590071004]: selection, separation, neutralization, and reframing. In order to release tensions arising from the two-perceived different educational systems these mothers used different dialectical strategies. The paper argues that East Asian mothers’ behaviour towards their children’s education cannot be categorized using a uniform cultural framework and a diasporic space provides multiple possibilities for exercising divergent approaches for them.

‘She’s Like Family’: transnational Filipino families, voluntary kin and the circulation of care “她就像家人”:跨国菲律宾家庭,自愿亲属和关怀循环

ABSTRACT Increased mobility has affected transnational families’ organization and provision of care. Focusing on the experiences of Filipino nurses in Norway, this article emphasizes how support structures in the Philippines and Norway affect the provision of care within transnational families. By applying the care circulation framework, this article sheds light on the complexity of transnational caregiving and draws attention to how the provision of care is a multidirectional process that relies on a range of actors. It looks at migrants not only as providers of care but simultaneously as receivers of care. The literature on transnational families has helped broaden the definition of the family to include inter- and intra-generational relationships beyond the nuclear family, including a growing recognition of the role of kin-like relationships. This article supports this broader definition of family and highlights the importance of kin-like relationships. Considering the increased impact of ‘migration regimes’ on the experiences of migrants, attention is paid to the challenges created by distance and by national policies and to their effects on the way care is provided within transnational families.

ABSTRACT Background: Existing research documented the connection between individuals’ childhood trauma exposure and adverse health and behavioural health outcomes. However, less attention has been paid to understanding trauma in an intergenerational context. Objective: This study aims to fill this research gap by (1) exploring the association between parents’ trauma histories and child behavioural outcomes; (2) unpacking the effects of different types of parental trauma on child behavioural outcomes; (3) examining whether these associations vary by parental roles. Participants and Setting: This study recruited 202 parents from an online data collection platform – Amazon Mechanical Turk. Methods: We conducted regression analyses to examine the associations between parental adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their child’s behavioural problems and functioning. Results: Findings showed that only parental childhood maltreatment ACEs, but not family dysfunction ACEs, were significantly associated with child behavioural problems and functioning. The impact of parental child maltreatment ACEs on child behavioural problems was equally significant between fathers and mothers. In contrast, mothers’ childhood maltreatment ACEs exerted a more potent effect on child functioning. Conclusion: Study findings highlighted the need for child behavioural health services to incorporate the screening and treatment of parental ACEs in treatment programmes to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma.

ABSTRACT There is rising interest in linking research on subjective well-being and the intergenerational transmission of personality traits, attitudes, norms, values, subjective evaluations, and satisfaction. Beyond the mere study of the intergenerational transmission of well-being, there has been a growing focus on the influence of parenting practices and parenting performance on adolescents’ well-being. This analysis explores the effects of parenting on this transmission with special attention to gender differences. Our investigation is based on representative survey data involving 852 Hungarian nuclear families with 12–16-year-old children from 2017. In bivariate terms, our paper compares parental and adolescent subjective well-being by investigating the association between their satisfaction. In multivariate terms, a regression model is developed whereby adolescents’ well-being is predicted by parental well-being and quality of parenting, controlled for individual and family characteristics, as well as the time parents and children, spend together. Results show that the intergenerational transmission of subjective well-being is very significant and is associated with gender-based variation in subjective quality of parenting. Based on the analysis, we highlight gender differences in relation to both parents and adolescents.
