Abstract Seen as a serious public health problem in different locations, leprosy is marked by taboos and carried by stigma. It is a neglected disease and made up of several explanations throughout history, which update living marks of the past, including in the implementation of public policies. Health conferences are spaces for society to participate in the definition of policies, aiming to impact the care plan of different illnesses. The objective of this article is to understand the relevance and perspectives pointed to public policies for the care of people affected by leprosy present in the municipal, state, and national stages of the 16th National Health Conference. This is a documentary research based on the final reports and in the wake of the ascending process of the 16th National Health Conference. The results show the lack of visibility of leprosy in the reports of the municipal and state stages of the conference and, in the national stage, the record has a double emphasis: producing visibility about the disease and its context, claiming to update social mobilization around it and permanent education actions aimed at workers.

Abstract The aim of the article was to present a first approach to an epistemological proposal that reflects on and deals with the construction and legitimation of knowledge generated from abject, abnormal, or crippled corporeities geopolitically located in the South. It pays special attention to the sex-gender-ability system in the social and epistemological organization of knowledge. In this development, we identify a positionality and wasted wealth for regional social analysis and transformation as a result of a modern colonial order. Hence, this proposal is inscribed within the Latin American critical thinking to reflect on those other places of abject enunciation.

Abstract This article discusses the need for physiotherapists to develop greater cultural competence for a broader approach to chronic pain. We first review different models of body and pain, from an anatomy laboratory training and anthropological perspective. By contrasting these perspectives, we analyze three situations experienced during the field work, while researching six women with chronic low back pain in a rural settlement. Based on these situations, we discuss how life trajectories mark the ways in which we perceive our bodies, how cultural competence is relevant to develop the professional’s ability to listen and take action, and how conviviality and collective action among these women during work in a cooperative can contribute to coping with pain in this rural context. A more qualified understanding of the background of patients with chronic back pain reveals the limits of physical therapy education and allows to rethink the treatment needs and possibilities in different contexts.

Abstract The presence of residual drugs in the environment is a growing global issue, with many studies seeking to quantify it. However, its behavior and effects, both on the environment and on humans are still mostly unknown. In this study, seven drugs were evaluated: Atenolol, Carbamazepine, Clonazepam, Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, Simvastatin, and Fluoxetine, from samples of sludge from a sewage treatment plant of the public system. The extraction of the compounds from the matrix was based on the leaching of the compounds in water and the analytical quantification was determined by an ultra-performance liquid chromatograph system, coupled to the mass spectrometer. The data indicate the possible movement of some drugs from aqueous to solid phase. We observed that the composting of the sludge could favor the biodegradation or mobilization of the compounds since there was a significant reduction in the concentrations, when comparing the values obtained before and after the composting process. The non-detection of a compound does not necessarily mean that it has been fully degraded by microorganisms; however, past studies reached similar results, which corroborates the adequacy of the methodological proposal and the adopted procedures, contributing to the production of reliable results.

Abstract The Amazon region encompasses a heterogenous territory with singular geographic features, that harbous different vulnerable populations, which require the development of abilities and innovations by health services. However, answers to this challenge become even more distant in the face of a marketing logic that tends to make differences invisible and privilege certain territories. In this scenario, our study analyzed the implementation of a Basic River Health Unit (UBSF), seeking to understand how the needs and singularities of riverside rural areas are included in the planning and execution of health services. To that end, interviews with health services managers and professionals and observations of health care professionals during daily activities were carried out. The results showed the forecast of services, with specific formats and resources for the Amazonian fluvial areas, was an opportunity for the specificities of the region to be evidenced and for more resources, including financial ones, being considered for these localities. However, they also showed that the services offered are still planned in a hierarchical way and organized and executed for urban areas, which points to the need for adaptations.

Abstract In the context of globalization, mentioning contemporary democracy, science, social-economic, sanitary, and environmental crises is recurrent. In Brazil, these crises have worsened due to historical-cultural structures that carry deep unresolved problems and due to governments that have worn down the national institutions that were reconstructed with hard work during its re-democratization process. In this editorial, we reflect on the national crisis context experienced in Brazil in the last years, situating social regressions resulting from neoliberal and conservative policies carried out by the last two heads of the federal government and placing some challenges to be faced by the country beginning by a movement to retrieve democracy.
