Abstract This paper studies the effect of an increase in the work horizon of middle aged workers on the school-work transition of their offsprings aged 15–29 years. I exploit the variation in the parental work horizon induced by the 2012 Fornero reform in Italy that abruptly changed the age and years of social security contribution requirements for pension eligibility. Utilising a difference-in-difference strategy in a multi-valued treatment setting, the study shows that the reform-induced increase in the work horizon of mothers caused an increase in the probability of their offsprings seeking their first job and a decrease in these offsprings’ probability of being a student. This effect is higher among offsprings who are male, those aged 15–21, those with mothers without a University degree and those in southern Italy. Fathers did not significantly affect the student status or any labour market outcomes of their offsprings. Mechanisms behind these findings include the longer reform-induced work horizon for mothers vs. fathers, and the consequent positive effect on mothers’ lifetime earnings.

How Extended Family Mental Health Issues Influence Household Portfolio Allocations

Growing research links household financial decisions to physical and mental health status within the nuclear family. We hypothesize that mental health issues (psychological distress) outside of the nuclear family unit are a unique contributor to household portfolio allocation decisions. We use panel data and find that having at least one sibling with psychological distress decreases the probability of risky asset ownership (stocks, mutual funds), decreases risky assets as a share of financial assets, and decreases total amount of risky asset holding. These results have important policy-related implications for understanding the connection between health, portfolio allocation, and wealth building.

Male investment in schooling with frictional labour and marriage markets

Abstract We present an equilibrium model with inter-linked frictional labour and marriage markets. Women’s flow value of being single is treated as given, and it captures returns from employment. Men can undertake a costly ex-ante investment in schooling. In the marriage market, women search sequentially for men characterised by wages, so they use a reservation value strategy. Single unemployed men conduct marital sequential search and, with an eye on the marriage market, also conduct a so-called constrained sequential job search. Given this setup, schooling enhances men’s marriage prospects as well as their labour market returns. In turn, women’s behaviour affects men’s schooling investment decision and their optimal job search strategy. We establish that for any given set of parameters, there exists a unique market equilibrium where a fraction of men get educated, and show that this fraction decreases if women’s labour market returns increase. We also examine the robustness of such an equilibrium.
