Social support has been found to act as a buffer against the effects of racial microaggressions, which are known to have an adverse effect on self-esteem. The current quantitative study examined the effects of social support and racial microaggressions on the self-esteem of African American women enrolled in predominately White institutions (PWIs). The sample comprised 121 African American women enrolled at PWIs. Data analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between perceived social support, racial microaggressions, and the self-esteem of African American women enrolled at PWIs. In analyzing individual subscales, family-based support and self-esteem were statistically significant. Implications for counseling are discussed.

The present randomized control trial examined the effectiveness of Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT) over treatment-as-usual (TAU) approaches for couples presenting for therapy following the discovery of infidelity. Forty-nine couples participated in this trial and were randomized to either a GMCT or TAU control group, with 19 completing all pre- and post-treatment assessments. Results showed that GMCT was globally more effective in facilitating affair recovery than TAU approaches, notably in the areas of trust, conflict management, relational satisfaction, and quality of sex. In this article, we (a) outline findings from this study, (b) discuss implications for the field, and (c) offer directions for future research.

In recent years, the fusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with traditional sectors has catalyzed a paradigm shift that extends beyond technological advancements and reaches into the core of human learning and development. One such domain undergoing significant transformation is mental health education. This short conceptual paper seeks to examine the intricate relationship between AI and education in the context of mental health studies, shedding light on the challenges, opportunities, and ethical considerations that arise as teaching evolves in the Age of AI. This paper is not intended to serve as THE definitive solution to inquiries regarding the integration of AI/ChatGPT in mental health education. Rather, its purpose is to provide AN approach to contemplating this matter and to initiate further discussions within mental health-related fields about the utilization of AI and ChatGPT in education, given the persistent prominence of AI.

The Impact of PTSD and Depression on Romantic Attachment Within Incarcerated Romantic Relationships 创伤后应激障碍和抑郁对禁闭恋爱关系中浪漫依恋的影响

There are currently 2.3 million Americans incarcerated. In 2018, Black males were 5.8 times more likely to be incarcerated than White males. Every aspect of incarcerated individuals’ lives is immensely impacted by the criminal justice system, this includes their romantic relationships. The purpose of this study is to examine if PTSD and depression impact romantic attachment. Using data from the Multi-site Family Study on Incarceration, Parenting, and Partnering study, our independent variables PTSD and depression used the 4-point Primary Care PTSD Scale (PC-PTSD) and The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). The dependent variable of romantic attachment consisted of four questions regarding close relationships. Our results showed that race, PTSD, and depression are all significant predictors of romantic attachment within incarcerated males and their non-incarcerated romantic partners. Clinical implications and future directions for incarcerated men and their nonincarcerated female romantic partners are provided.

The consequences of incarceration extend far beyond the individual incarcerated. This article aims to understand the needs, thoughts, feelings, and experiences of incarcerated loved ones through the uses-and gratifications theory. Posts derived from the Facebook group entitled, “Incarcerated Loved Ones” and were coded using thematic analysis. The posts highlighted two themes: negative emotional experiences and criminal justice consequences. The theme negative emotional experiences included feelings of discomfort, requesting encouragement, and venting. The theme criminal justice consequences included difficulty navigating the system, visitation, financial burden, and missing moments. The discussion includes clinical and policy implications as well as future research directions.

Family Health and Mental Well-Being Among Young Filipino Undergraduates: The Mediating Role of Self-Care 菲律宾青年大学生家庭健康与心理健康:自我照顾的中介作用

The family is a salient social institution influencing its members’ health capacities and outcomes. Particularly for collectivist societies like the Philippines, the family is a persistent social factor that shapes the health of its younger members, even during their college years. Following the health-promoting family framework, this study examines the relationship between family health and the mental well-being of young Filipino undergraduates and how self-care mediates this relationship. A total of 259 undergraduate students living with their families participated in this cross-sectional, simple mediation study. Data was collected via an online survey. Results suggest that family health has a significant positive effect on mental well-being ( B=3.227, p<.001). Moreover, self-care partially mediates (46.89%) family health and mental well-being ( B[indirect effect]=1.513, p<.001). Recommendations for mental health and helping professionals working in higher education settings are forwarded in this article.

This narrative inquiry utilizes a Quare theory framework to explore the stories of Black same-gender-loving (SGL) male romantic couples and how they reconcile family matters. In this study, “family matters” is a double entendre, that is, highlighting the importance of family bond and ongoing familial conflicts that impact intimate relationships. The findings and implications of this study support counseling professionals with tools to work with Black SGL couples and families.
