ABSTRACT The theoretical research of this study contributes to improving the state of the art of studies that, from the second half of the 1980s onwards, addressed the issue of the impact of return migration on rural development in Portugal by introducing the variable tourism development. To this end, 5,157 Portuguese emigrants were surveyed with the aim of assessing the impact of their return on tourism development in rural areas of Portugal. Results showed that those between the ages of 29 and 39 who have a house in their place of origin would like to return, invest and have employment in the area of tourism, as well as have a rural lifestyle in Portugal. Considering that traditional agriculture is also a characteristic of the Portuguese rural landscape, the same emigrants could contribute to its maintenance, since they would also like to practice agriculture, as a complementary activity and mainly for self-consumption.

Specifying Destination-Based Networks by Governance-Mode: A Social Capital Approach to Innovative Capacity in a Rural Destination of Azerbaijan

ABSTRACT The capacity of rural tourism destinations to create new knowledge is generally considered to be at a low level - especially in an emerging country context, where inadequate networking even more impedes the acquisition, transformation and exploitation of new knowledge. Findings from knowledge-based tourism research support the idea that destinations’ innovative capacities are embedded in a juxtaposition of differently configured and co-located subnetworks whose characteristics are highly dependent on the state of social capital. The present study investigates these configurations in community destinations for differences in their suitability to foster innovation based on their specific social capital disposition. Based on a triangulated methodology, network configuration profiles further substantiate the relationships between external network characteristics, knowledge absorption processes and innovation on the case of a rural emerging country destination in Azerbaijan. Limitations arise from the cultural context dependency of the social capital dispositions which however offer a promising field for future comparative research.

ABSTRACT In this work, tourism planning and development (TPD) for small island destinations (SIDs) is explored using an integrated multi-attribute decision-making method. Several factors were extracted from the literature to serve as criteria in evaluating proposed policies or initiatives, which were obtained through focus group discussions with the relevant decision-makers. The best-worst method is adopted to assign a priority weight for each criterion. Moreover, the preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation (PROMETHEE) is adopted to identify priority initiatives. An actual case study of evaluating initiatives for Bantayan Island (Philippines) is reported in this work to demonstrate the proposed approach. Although the findings contain idiosyncrasies, they can be starting points of discussion for insights in managing SIDs. This work advances the domain literature by offering an integrated approach that systematically evaluates TPD initiatives which are crucial inputs to resource allocation decisions and policy design.

ABSTRACT Ecotourism is increasingly being adopted to improve the livelihoods of local communities and fulfill conservation goals. Many critical actors, including but not limited to governments and conservation organizations, believe that for ecotourism to be successful, local communities must appreciate and support wildlife conservation activities. Without evidence that communities’ value systems are oriented in a manner that aligns with the authorities’ sustainable development and wildlife conservation ideologies, strategies for how to achieve the most benefits for the most people will be based on anecdotes and assumptions. This study investigated residents’ value orientation towards wildlife in the context of Bardia National Park (BNP), Nepal. We surveyed residents from eight buffer zone communities surrounding BNP with a human–wildlife conflict (n = 871). Our findings revealed four distinct clusters of resident WVOs, creating challenges for BNP ecotourism development. Socio-demographic and resource management factors also play critical roles in shaping the sustainable development of BNP ecotourism.

ABSTRACT Many tourists look for coastal and marine destinations where they can perform various natural and cultural activities. This study addresses the dimensions of push and pull motivations that influence a coastal and marine destination for domestic tourism, and an analysis was performed with the dimensions of push and pull motivations that predict satisfaction, return and destination recommendation. For this purpose, a quantitative study of 441 surveys, where the researchers used data reduction and multiple regression techniques to select the motivational variables that predict a future behavioral variable, was carried out in Acapulco, a relevant coastal and marine destination in Mexico. Findings revealed two motivating dimensions of thrust that were “novelty” and “escape” and two dimensions of attraction that were “static marine” and “active marine,” The "novelty" and "static marine" factors mainly influenced satisfaction, while the factors that mostly predict return and recommendation were "escape" and "novelty.”

Local perceptions of tourism development and socio-cultural impacts in Nigeria

ABSTRACT There is a shortage of literature on the nature of tourism development and the socio-cultural impacts in Nigeria, making it challenging to identify and discuss strategies for building on positive aspects. Unplanned tourism leaves local people aggrieved, whilst planned tourism may provide economic benefits and help to revive their culture. Although tourism development in Nigeria is affected by terrorism and insecurity, the government is willing to develop the industry. Therefore, research is needed to understand tourism development and socio-cultural consequences. This paper reports on a study conducted in Southeastern Nigeria, which confirmed that tourism is in the early development stage, and the local people noted that significant adverse impacts are not observable. The paper proposes strategies for addressing potential negative socio-cultural impacts, including being realistic, working together, creating equal opportunities and education/awareness. This paper provides valuable information for planners and developers on possible ways of developing resident-friendly tourism destination.

ABSTRACT Synergistic extension of long-distance and local trails is a great opportunity to form unified networks with increased potential and attractiveness. This paper presents and analyses two recent hiking trail network extension projects in Northern Transdanubia, Hungary, as they relate to network structure and the variety of possible hiking tours. One features new local trail connections added to existing long-distance trails, resulting in a local network with various trip options. Another is an example of a new regional multi-day route created by extensions and connections to existing local trails. We present the motivations behind these extensions, the opportunities opened up by them, including their potential on conservation and development, by observing the layout of the resulting trail network and its connections to natural and man-made attractions and facilities. These typical synergistic trail developments reveal a set of good practices in network design which can be generalised and adapted to other regions and contexts.

This paper presents and analyses two recent hiking trail network extension projects in Northern Transdanubia, Hungary, as they relate to network structure and the variety of possible hiking tours. One features new local trail connections added to existing long-distance trails, resulting in a local network with various trip options. Another is an example of a new regional multi-day route created by extensions and connections to existing local trails. We present the motivations behind these extensions, the opportunities opened up by them, including their potential on conservation and development, by observing the layout of the resulting trail network and its connections to natural and man-made attractions and facilities. These typical synergistic trail developments reveal a set of good practices in network design which can be generalised and adapted to other regions and contexts.","PeriodicalId":47312,"journal":{"name":"Tourism Planning & Development","volume":"19 1","pages":"245 - 278"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2021-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/21568316.2021.1936148","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49216292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
