This paper critically examines the recently proposed Grays Bay Road and Port and Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link projects. Both projects aim to open Nunavut's Kivalliq and Kitikmeot regions to extractive development and have been championed as examples of economic reconciliation and Inuit self-determination. Based on analysis of regulatory proceedings in which Nunavummiut Inuit have considered mining in areas impacted by the corridors, project finances, and the flow of benefits associated with extractive development, we ask how these projects engage Inuit jurisdiction. We suggest that despite claims made by proponents and project supporters, the Grays Bay Road and Port and Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link projects will likely prioritize the aims and objectives of industry and continue the mostly unidirectional, uncompensated flow wealth away from Inuit. We conclude by reflecting on the implications of an expanded resource economy relative to the exercise of authority over Inuit land.

This article examines the social justice implications of the scales at which decisions are made about nuclear waste in northwestern Ontario. Drawing on a case study of a proposed deep geological repository, it argues that the nuclear industry's approach to site selection focuses on strategically constructed “local” and “national” scales of decision making which can exclude potentially affected First Nations and municipalities. By excluding other scales from decision making—including the scales that First Nations have mobilized like watersheds, transportation corridors, and First Nations territories —the nuclear industry has failed to include many First Nations and municipalities that could be exposed to environmental risk if the proposed waste repository is built and operated. As a result, the proposed waste repository is posed to move through assessment and regulatory processes without the free, prior, and informed consent of all potentially affected First Nations.

Residential real estate models are a key component of planning support systems, which aid in shaping future urban land use and transportation. These models typically rely on parameters estimated from historical data corresponding to a specific base year, assuming that such parameters remain stable over time. This paper examines the temporal stability of parameters linked to variables influencing average housing values at the dissemination-area level. It does so by comparing parameter estimates across multiple time periods in two Canadian cities: Ottawa, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta. Using Canadian census data, pooled regression analyses were conducted for the years 2006, 2011, and 2016 to model average housing values. The findings indicate general consistency in the factors affecting housing values across both cities. Interestingly, the parameters of the Ottawa pooled models suggest strong stability over time compared to Calgary. Additionally, the Spatial Autoregressive model outperformed both linear and spatial error models in terms of accuracy and predictive performance.

This study examines the use of participatory mapping as a method to represent the values of non-human entities (more-than-humans) in socio-ecological landscapes. This research seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical developments in more-than-human geographies and their practical landscape-level applications. Through a combination of literature review, as well as participatory mapping interviews and focus groups conducted with 28 participants along Mission Creek in British Columbia, this research explores if and how human proxies can represent the interests of non-human beings through space. The findings reveal several difficulties in translating more-than-human values into mappable spatial data, as well as ethical tensions in balancing human and more-than-human priorities for landscapes. We find that there is value in integrating diverse perspectives, such as Indigenous knowledge, citizen science, and children's observations, which contribute nuanced insights into species’ needs, habitat relationships, and ecological processes. Lastly, we also find that participatory mapping may encourage reflexive and relational socio-ecological thinking, which may promote more inclusive and sustainable environmental decision making. This research contributes to the development of more-than-human geography by providing practical insights into the methodological and ethical complexities of representing more-than-humans and may also advance efforts toward identifying methods to encourage sustainable and equitable landscape management.

Older adults in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are projected to increase 4-fold from 46 million to 165 million by 2050. Despite this fact, global health policies and programs typically neglect this particular demographic. This is illustrated by the fact that policies and programs directed towards human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in SSA commonly overlook older adults managing HIV/AIDS, despite this demographic being projected to increase 190% by 2040. To support evidence-informed policy and practice, this scoping review synthesizes peer-reviewed articles focusing on older adults (50-plus years) managing HIV/AIDS in SSA. A systematic search of peer-reviewed articles written in English between 2000 and 2024 resulted in a total of 48,961 articles, of which 42 met the inclusion criteria. Results revealed four primary themes: knowledge of HIV/AIDS, challenges in healthcare settings (such as ageist assumptions from healthcare providers), barriers to HIV/AIDS-related care (including transportation barriers), and experiences of those managing HIV/AIDS (such as difficulties with status disclosure). Findings underscore that to improve the health and wellbeing of older populations living with HIV/AIDS in SSA, policies and programs should address ageism and discrimination in healthcare settings and address financial insecurities.
