Recent work has shown that potentially useful predictions of the circulation of library materials can be made which do not require very restrictive assumptions about underlying probability distributions. In the same spirit, we here consider one of the classic problems of bibliometrics, viz. predicting the number of ‘new’ journals carrying ‘relevant’ articles in the future, using both established parametric approaches and the newer, empirical methods.

During the years following the end of World War II, there was a considerable expansion of library services in industry, and some of the scientists engaged in this activity sought to establish strong links with professional librarians, particularly in universities and city libraries with collections of scientific literature. Among them were Denis Arnold, Wilfred Ashworth and Brian Vickery, and it was at a conference of the London and Home Counties Branch of the Library Association that I first met both Arnold and Vickery. It was my good fortune to discover very quickly a community of interest with Brian, based on our industrial experience, and a similar outlook on a wide range of matters social and political.

A number of Management Science applications in libraries have been concerned with increasing the ‘immediate availability’ of documents held by the library. It has been found that low availability is often a cause of user complaints about library service.

The purpose of the present investigation was to determine to what extent authors of scientific articles cite their previous publications and what are the principal distinguishing features of this particular type of citation. We have analysed the bibliographies of a group of articles from the areas of plant physiology and neurobiology, and have examined the relationship of the self‐citations to some characteristics of the articles in which they occurred. We found self‐citations to be more recent and to be cited more frequently in the text of the citing articles than citations of other authors. The extent of self‐citing did not appear to be related to the number of co‐authors and to the bibliography size of the citing articles, or to their authors' productivity.

Reports a laboratory experiment in which verbalized tape‐recorded searches on five printed subject indexes reveal something of the linguistic processing that took place. Some 20% of the entries examined were changed grammatically, by word order change or function word supply, according to the linguistic form of the index concerned. Extracts from the search transcriptions are given, and the search processing modes of seeking, scanning, and screening are discussed.

The possibility of having access to all the world's literature from a single computer terminal stimulated the imagination of the research workers in the late' sixties. It was this goal and the fascination of the co‐operation between man and machine, that inspired the major changes that have taken place in Information Retrieval over the past ten years.

World periodical literature output in geography from 1970 to 1973 and the output concerning the USA, British Isles, France, and Germany for the same period are presented in three sets of Bradford‐Zipf bibliographs, while the verbal formulation of the law is translated into seven tables based on the same data. Results suggest that the convolution of correlated and uncorrelated Bradford distributions yields another Bradford distribution and that data conforming with the verbal formulation of Bradford's law do not automatically conform with the linear ideal of a Bradford bibliograph and vice versa.

Bradford was a small, dapper man, dressed immaculately in expensive suits, and in the rose season never without a perfect specimen in his button‐hole. He walked with his feet turned out in a very characteristic fashion and out of doors used a heavy walking‐stick. He obtained his degree by study at night‐school and his D.Sc. by research carried out in his office in the Library. Any ordinary person would have been deterred by the lack of normal facilities such as water, gas, electrical points (the room was heated by a coal fire!). He arrived punctually at the then official starting time of 10 a.m., lunched off sandwiches in his room, and went home at the official time of 4.50 p.m. In between he worked like a beaver. After he became Keeper of the Library his scientific work was of a theoretical nature as he had by then got his D.Sc. Anything he wanted to achieve he worked at against all odds and would never give up no matter what obstacles were put in his way, in his library work as in his scientific.

The Bradford law is explored theoretically by means of a very mixed Poisson model which, it is claimed, elucidates the uncertainties surrounding the law and its applications. It is argued that Bradford succeeded in formulating an empirical regularity which has pure and hybrid forms but that all the variants can be subsumed under a simple logarithmic law which, for reasons explained, escapes exact expression in conventional frequency terms. The theoretical aspects discussed include the hybridity of form, estimations, sampling problems, the stability of ranks, homogeneity of data, and tests of significance. Some numerical examples, some simulated and some drawn from social contexts outside bibliography, are used both to illustrate theoretical issues and also to indicate the wide generality of the Bradford law. Possible applications and developments of the theory are indicated.

The ‘automated management system’ ASU‐PECHAT' is the first of its kind to be applied to the publishing industry of an entire country. The first subsystems began operation in 1975. It is designed to supply information for the management of publishing, printing and the book trade throughout the USSR, with the intention of easing the tasks of a highly‐centralized administrative apparatus and of facilitating the supervision of the content of publications. Three subsystems are to handle finance, accounting and personnel records for the entire publishing‐printing‐bookselling sector, and three more will assist the internal planning of each subsector and the monitoring of its operations. They will be complemented by a further sub‐system to handle bibliographical data, and another to provide information services to staff working in the sector.
