Mixed inheritance model for resistance to anthracnose leaf blight in maize 玉米抗炭疽病叶枯病混合遗传模型

A separation of the effects of major genes from effects of polygenes is important to understand genetic inheritance of quantitative traits and predict the segregation of a crossing. The inheritance mode of resistance to anthracnose leaf bligh t (ALB) caused by C. graminicola was evaluated by a mixed model. P 1, P2, F1, F2, BC1, and BC2 generations derived from four crossings between tropical maize inbred lines were used. Maximum likelihood was used to choose the best fitting inheritance model and to estimate genetic parameters. The mixed model indicated that the resistance to ALB was controlled by a major gene in all crosses and trials, and by polygenes in at least one trial. Additive and dominance effects were important for both major gene and polygenes. Both effects of the major genes were negative, indicating their contribution to disease resistance, while both effects of the polygenes were positive or negative, reflecting differences in the genetic background among inbred li nes.

Clonal selection in arracacha breeding 荸荠育种中的无性系选择

Twenty-nine arracacha clones were evaluated in 2002/2003, at the Horticultural Research Garden of the Federal University of Vicosa. A randomized complete block design with 30 treatments and three replications was used. Each plot contained 75 plants in three 10 m long rows (rows spaced 1 m apart and plants 0.40 m). Six competitive plants were picked eight months after planting. Sprouts were collected from the remaining plants eleven and a half months after planting. Ten quantitative and four qualitative traits were evaluated. Variance analyses showed significance of all but one quantitative trait (non-commercial root weight). Genetic distances were estimated by Mahalanobis' generalized distance and clones grouped by clustering, applied to quantitative traits. Our goal was to identify early high yielding, healthy, and genetically diverging clones. Clones BGH 4550, BGH 5742, and BGH 6425 seemed to be promising future varieties, and 10 clones are interesting for further breeding work.

Gherkin elite line selection 小黄瓜精英选系

Gherkin lines were obtained by mass selection cycles in alteration with inbreeding cycles in a F population evaluated by Koch and Costa (1991). The purpose of the present study was to identify and select elite lines with plant uniform ity and desirable fruit characteristics. Seedlings of 71 lines were obtained in a greenhouse and transplanted to a bed covered wit h black polypropylene felt. The plants were grown prostate along the ground, without pruning, in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates and five plants per plot. Three criteria were trendsetters for line selection: lack of dormancy, plant and fruit uniformity, and yield components performance. Based on these parameters, the F 6M5S1 gherkin lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 15, 20, 55, 60, and 63 were selected. These elite gherkin lines were called Paulista Gherkin, due to their contrastin g characteristics in relation to the common type.

Characterization of differential coffee tree hosts for Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br. with RAPD markers 不同咖啡树寄主的特性研究。Br。带RAPD标记

Eighteen clones of differential coffee tree hosts for Hemileia vastatrix Berk. et Br. were characterized with RAPD markers. The genetic distances were estimated and the genealogical origin of the clones compared to data of marker- based clusters. Thirty-five primers identified 158 polymorphic loci of RAPD markers. The cluster based on the matrix of genetic dissimilarity values was compatible with information on the genealogical origin cited in literature. Specific markers for a number of clones were identified, and a combination of 12 RAPD markers allowed the characterization of the studied clones.

Genetic diversity of cacao accessions selected for resistance to witches' broom based on RAPD markers 基于RAPD标记的可可抗病材料遗传多样性分析

To increase the genetic diversity sources of resistance to witches' broom disease, 59 cacao trees of commercial plantations of the State of Bahia, Brazil, were selected and cloned. The diversity of these clones was evaluated with RAPD markers. Their pedigree was investigated by comparison to traditional resistance sources used as parents for most hybrid mixtures cultivated in the State. One hundred and six RAPD bands were obtained, 85.8% of which were polymorphic. Genetic distances among the clones varied from 0.04 to 0.41. The MDS plot showed large genetic variability among clones. Analyses based on rare markers inherent to Scavina-6 and Scavina-12 clones, which represent important resistance sources, showed a close relationship of these sources to most accessions. However, some accessions did not present any of the rare Scavina markers, suggesting potentially different alleles, which could contribute to broaden the gene pool of breeding programs for resistance to witches' broom.

Genetic analysis of F6 and F6:7 soybean generations 大豆F6和F6:7代的遗传分析

For estimating genetic parameters and selecting superior lines for grain yield, forty-five soybean (Glycine max L.) crosses in F6 and F6:7 generations were evaluated. The soybean lines FT-Cristalina, EMGOPA-301, IAC-4, IAC-5, IAC-6, IAC-8, IAC-9, IAC-11, Santa Rosa, and OCEPAR-9-SS-1 were used in the crosses. The F6 progenies of 44 crosses (except EMGOPA-301 x IAC-5) and the ten parents were evaluated as well as the F6:7 progenies from all 45 crosses and the ten parents in the next crop. The number of days to maturity (NDM), plant height at maturity (PHM), agronomic value (AV) and grain yield (GY) were evaluated for both generations. There was some difficulty to select early top yield lines due to the high positive genotypic correlation between GY and NDM. The heritability estimates were high (> 0.70) and moderate (0.40 – 0.70) for NDM and PHM, respectively. The presence of transgressive segregates indicated the possibility of selecting lines with high grain yield.

A procedure commonly used is the stratification of environments through the analysis of genotype-environment interactions, which must be minimal or statistically not significant. We propose an alternative procedure based on factor analysis. Moreover, we propose a methodolo gy for the analysis of genotype adaptability through graphic analysis, generated by plotting scores from factor analysis. These new methodologies were used to assess grain yield of maize hybrids evaluated in diferent environments. Results provided the establishment of environmental subgroups with high correlations within the subgroups, and low or no correlations among them. The scores provided plot that helped understand the adaptability of the hybrids. The methodologies proposed for environment stratification and adaptability analysis were effective and of easy interpretation.

Bean breeders evaluate the water uptake (WU) capacity of lines with the aim of identifying those with the shortest cooking time. There is no information on the most likely effect of the selection for WU in the expression of traits related to germination. To obtain information in this respect, F 2:4 families of crosses between the lines CI-107 with Carioca 80 and Amarelinho were evaluated in relation to WU, germination speed index (GSI), and emergence speed index (ESI). The genetic variance was greatest in cross CI-107 x Amarelinho. The estimate of heritability for ESI was similar in both crosses and inferior to the one obtained for WU. The correlated responses in ESI to the selection practiced in WU were particularly expressive in seeds stored for 6 months. Comparison of nutritional efficiency among hydroponic grafted young coffee trees for N, P, and K 水培嫁接咖啡幼树对N、P、K的营养效率比较

Grafted Coffea arabica L. plants were grown hydroponically in a greenhouse for an evaluation of their nutritional efficiency under the influence of different rootstocks. Four C. arabica genotypes were used as scions: 'Catuai Vermelho IAC 15', 'Oeiras MG 6851', and lines H 419-10-3-1-5, and H 514-5-5-3. The three latter are cultivars resistant to the Hemileia vastatrix, pathogen of the orange rust. Rootstocks were three genotypes of Coffea canephora Pierre et Froenher: Apoata LC 2258, Conilon, and Robustao Capixaba (Emcapa 8141), and one C. arabica genotype: Mundo Novo IAC 376-4. Rootstocks Apoata LC 2258 and Mundo Novo IAC 376-4 were outstanding. Cultivars Conilon and Robustao Capixaba did not increase the nutritional efficiency of the scions. 'Oeiras' and H 419-10-3-1-5 had considerable nutrition efficiency when used as non- grafted plants.
