New approaches using selection index in sweet potato breeding for biofortification 利用选择指数进行甘薯生物强化育种的新途径

The objective of this research was to select orange-fleshed sweet potato clones with high stability, yield, and β-carotene content in different planting seasons, using a selection index. Joint analysis of experiments and analysis of responsiveness and stability by the GGE biplot method were performed for the variables yield, dry matter percentage, and root flesh color. The variables yield, dry matter, color and stability were used to estimate a selection index. The GGE biplot analysis indicated that there are differences among clones in stability for Yield. However, the percentage of dry matter and color of the roots show low interaction in the different environments. Because of that, stability for yield was included in the selection index, together with yield, dry matter, and root orange color intensity. Finally, the selection index based on stability, yield, dry matter percentage and root color was efficient in the selection of a new biofortified sweet potato cultivar.

Ethanol from maize hybrids in Brazil 巴西杂交玉米生产的乙醇

The aim was to investigate the differences between maize hybrids for their agronomic yield and their agro-energy potential. The study was conducted in Palotina and Assis Chateaubriand, Paraná, Brazil. The treatments were composed of 10 maize hybrids (DKB290 [non-GMO], DKB315, DKB340, DKB290, Formula, Defender, Status, 2B810, 30F53, BG7330), which were evaluated for grain moisture and yield, starch content, total soluble solids content, ethanol content in the juice and ethanol yield. The important factors for the result are related to grain yield and the quality of the harvested grains, and agronomic performance of these hybrids may differ according to each crop year. Hybrid 30F53 stood out positively for all variables. Hybrid DKB315 showed the highest ethanol yield and high grain yield, and insignificant grain quality was not enough to result in a decline in ethanol yield.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability and performance of the agronomic traits of wheat cultivars in the southern region of Minas Gerais for the purpose of choosing parents for a rainfed wheat breeding program. We evaluated 78 wheat cultivars in two locations in Minas Gerais regarding different agronomic traits. The statistical analyses were carried out using Henderson’s mixed-model approach. The genetic values of the cultivars were predicted, and the heritabilities and accuracies were estimated for selection of cultivars. The cultivar × location interaction was decomposed into its simple and complex fractions. The genetic and environmental correlations between the traits were estimated, and selection was made for multiple traits using the sum of the standardized variables (Z-index). The genetic variance was significant for all the traits, and the cultivar × location interaction was significant. By the Z-index, 15 wheat cultivars more adapted were identified.

Sex determination of papaya var. ‘Maradol’ reveals hermaphrodite-to-male sex reversal under greenhouse conditions 木瓜品种‘Maradol’的性别测定揭示了在温室条件下雌雄同体到雄性的性别逆转

Papaya is a nutritious fruit cultivated worldwide under suitable climate conditions. This plant is polygamous, bearing female, male, and hermaphrodite sex types determined by sex chromosomes XX, XY, and XYh, respectively. In this paper, a molecular sex determination of papaya var. ‘Maradol’ was carried out based on PCR and specific primers. Specific molecular markers resulted in sixty-nine hermaphrodites and twenty-one female plants, matching 100% to the flower morphology. Nevertheless, since the summer stressing conditions rose in the greenhouse, sex reversal to male phenotype was observed in 43% of hermaphrodite plants due to high-temperature conditions. A specific male marker could not detect that change, supporting the proposal that sex reversal is caused by harsh environmental conditions aimed at epigenetic modification and genes related to hormones. Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of molecular sex determination and the importance of controlling the growing requirements of papaya to avoid sex reversal.

Thirty-three coffee SSR primers from enriched genomic library with (GT)15 and (AGG)10 repeats were analyzed in 24 coffee tree accessions. Twenty-two primers were polymorphic among accessions; the number of alleles ranged from 2 to 13, with the mean number of 5.1 alleles per primer. PIC values ranged from 0.08 to 0.79. The highest mean PIC values were found for C. canephora (0.46), and the lowest values for C. arabica (0.22) and triploids (0.22) accessions. The polymorphic SSR markers used in this study were useful for genetic fingerprinting in the coffee tree, especially in the C. canephora and the leaf rust resistant arabica cultivars.

Management system of an active genebank of common bean 普通豆活性基因库管理系统

Genetic resources are conserved ex situ in genebanks, which are used as a source of useful alleles. The information generated by the Active Common Bean Genebank (ACBG) is stored in a Database Management system which ensures a quick and safe data recovery. Using Microsoft Access, a database system was developed to store and search bases of accession combinations or directly among morphological, physiological and yield descriptors of common bean. The system called Common Bean Genebank (CBGB) provides a graphical interface for the operation in the database, facilitating and optimizing the search time in germplasm catalogues.

Cultivar CD 1 16 was developed by the Cooperativa Central de Pesquisa Agricola (COODETEC) and is suitable for cultivation in the states of Parana, Sao Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Goias, and Distrito Federal. CD 116 is tolerant to the major diseases, particularly blast, has a high industrial grain quality and mean yield of 3908 kg ha -1 , exceeding the control cultivars by 6%.
