This article addresses the narrative of the separated families in an interpretive framework of meaning. Beginning in the early 1960s, there was a wave of immigration to South America, starting with Brazil and Argentina. Many of these immigrants were separated families with roots in North Korea, and those living abroad are considered compatriots who can be included in both South and North Korea. They turned to the Organization for the Reunification of Separated Korean Families Overseas in Toronto and the Committee on the Protection of Overseas Koreans in in Pyongyang to nd parents and children separated during liberation and the Korean War. The possibility of meeting family members in their hometowns reorganized the meaning of their lives and conrmed their existence in a dierent time and space than they had in the South. It was the family community, the foundation of their identity, that brought their dignity to the universal world. In a world free from a divided society, free from the magnetic eld of ideology, they felt inner freedom and practiced free will toward their homeland, parents and children.

In the first half of the 20th century, Kye Ung Sang(1893~1967) was a so-called itinerant scientist, who traveled around East Asia to conduct research activities. Despite his education and research experience in sericulture at Imperial University in Japan, he was able to engage in research actively only aer he moved to China. Although he returned to colonial Joseon, his position was not guaranteed, and even aer liberation, his research conditions surrounding him did not improve at all. It was only when he went up to North Korea that he received state support and reached the heyday of scientic research. When crossing regions, he moved in one body united with his research subjects and achievements. In this process, as he accumulated his scientic achievements, Kye Ung Sang grew from an assistant researcher to a leader in the research group. As his scientific research progressed, the selected silkworms had to escape from their natural environment and live in a harsher and changed environment. His research outcomes, which changed from anatomy and physiology to genetics and breeding, came to possess a strong social value beyond the academic dimension. Kye’s scientic journey was a strategic way to advance his research while actively seeking scientic survival. As he repeatedly moved from region to region, he rose from the periphery to the center of science and became a pivotal gure in the research group. By successfully carrying out the scientic missions set forth by the nation as important, he joined the ranks of the country’s top scientists. Kye Ung Sang’s scientific migration simultaneously demonstrates the scientific activities of Korean scientists and the scientic circulation in East Asia.

Understanding economic history or economic policy during King Sejong’s reign failed not only to play an important role in the “Nationalist narrative” of Sejong’s achievements, but also to be used as a basis for criticism of King Sejong in the “New Right View of History” that criticized the nationalist view. e continuous and complementary aspect of economic policies in the early Joseon Dynasty, including the reign of Sejong, is far from the existing historical perception that understands the reign of Sejong as a protruding and exceptional period. Studies on the economic history, which have been excluded from forming the historic view of King Sejong’s reign, can serve as a starting point for identifying long-term and structural trends in the early history of the Joseon Dynasty. In order to understand the nature of economic policies during King Sejong’s reign, it is necessary to look at not only various successfully implemented economic policies, but also policies that failed to establish institutionally and sectors that were not attempted during King Sejong’s reign. Economic policies during King Sejong’s reign show the orientation of creating a homogeneous economic space on a national basis or a homogeneous national economy. These attempts have an independent eect that cannot be understood as the emergence of a national economy or as an intermediate process of transition and development to capitalism and the modern state. It is necessary to raise an appropriate question that can capture the historical reality in which the establishment of slavery, which conicts with economic policies in principle, occurred at the same time.

The main purpose of this paper is to examine the cultural exchange between North Korea and Eastern Europe by analyzing the travelogue and translation literature that was included in the ‘Joseon Literature’ since the political warfare in July 1953.BRThrough this, this paper has expanded the investigation on the cultural exchange of North Korea that used to be centered around the Soviet Union and China toward other nations, and examined what inuence North Korea has exchanged through the World Literature network in laying the foundation of socialism structure and restoration aer the Korean War. BRIn addition, this study has examined the overall process of how each North Korean litterateur have built their perception-within-world through the cultural exchange with Eastern Europe that restarted aer the war.BRSuch research is valuable in that it re-examines the international relationship with North Korea, which used to be known as having a closed relationship, based on the interaction with the Eastern Europe network, and it is an attempt to holistically capture the trajectory of cultural exchange of the entire Korean Peninsula by extending the boundaries of Korean literature research toward the ‘Socialism World Literature.’

This article aims to examine the reality and people of post-war restoration reflected in everyday life in North Korean society aer the Armistice Regime, especially in literature and art. At the moment of armistice, North Korean people expressed their joy of being freed from the fear of bombing. North Korean society turned the war into a memory of victory and started rebuilding industrial facilities in factories, rural areas, and cities in the restored daily life. In this reality, Newspapers and popular culture created war heroes, industrial heroes, and labor heroes to encourage political slogans and propaganda, but literature and the arts were given a role to educate communist human beings in addition to propaganda and agitation. is article noted that the two novels representing the “post-war recovery period” in North Korean literature history used politics and slogans as surface narratives, and reproduced characters and sub-subjects with the concrete image of the living world and feminine values in the reality.

Why did the ‘Square Politics’ Disappear after June 3rd Protest in 1964? A Study on the Spatial Characteristics of the Democratic Movement in Seoul in the 1960s based on GIS

Until now, studies of the Korean democratization movement have focused on identifying the dynamics of the movement’s agents, without analyzing how external conditions such as spatial structures and state responses intertwined with the movement’s various characteristics. As a result, the Korean democratization movement has tended to be depicted as a unidirectional process of development and the external conditions of the movement have been depicted as abstract and static. As an attempt to expand the study of democratization movements, this study analyzes the changes in the spatial characteristics of the democratization movement in Seoul in the 1960s and its background through GIS research methodology. In the field of Korean history, GIS research methodology has been mainly used to analyze pre-modern period, administrative areas, geographical boundaries, and transportation routes, but the “3.1 Movement Database” (https://db.history.go.kr/samil) released by the National Institute of Korean History in 2019 showed that GIS research methodology is a very useful tool for identifying the spatial characteristics of the movement.BRInspired by the “3.1 Movement Database”, this study organized all the raw data on the number of protest schools, protesters, and the furthest points on the way of protesters in 1960s in Seoul and displayed them on a basemap in the QGIS program. e results showed that in 1964, when martial law was declared, student protests mostly reached the city center, but from 1965 onwards, even though the scale of protests was larger and the protests lasted for a longer period of time, the density of protests in the city center was signicantly lower due to the police’s ‘school gate lockdown tactic’ using tear gas. In other words, this paper argues that the police’s newly developed riot control tactics, in addition to media control and public security incidents, were important factors in the disappearance of ‘square politics’ aer the June 3 incident.

The article was intended to remind long-term inmates who had been “forced to change their thoughts” that they had been left out of the 2000 repatriation and were still waiting for the second one. eir identity has been structured by prison life, as evidenced by terms like “prisoner of conscience” or “long-term prisoner”, but this article argues that they have coexisted in our society for 30 years even aer being released from prison in order to highlight the dynamics and signicance of that period.BRAer being released from jail in December 1988, long-term “forced conversion” inmates had to live as lower class workers in Korean society while being closely monitored by the police. Transferring to a worker was typically a dicult process as well.BRey were tormented and forced to turn, but they lived with a bad conscience because they did. Due to the ‘fact’ of being converted, they were excluded from repatriation in 2000. erefore, they proclaimed that “conversion by coercion and torture is invalid” and stood in solidarity with South Korean civic groups to be repatriated. Additionally, they actively took part in South Korea’s progressive civic movement.
