In a globalized economy, the competitive advantages of modern companies are defined by the number of knowledge assets and organizational relationships which determines the uniqueness of the company in the market and its key capabilities. The article clarifies the meaning of the key capabilities of the company as a unique set of business processes and attributes of the company, which, combined with resources and technologies, are embodied into new products, processes and services with new consumer properties and provide competitive advantages. The authors conceptualized the process of identification and measurement of key capabilities of the company and emphasized that its main goal is to ensure the company's competitive advantages. The authors synthesized tools and methods for measuring the key capabilities of the company and showed the processes that require such measurement: business process modeling, competitive positioning of the company based on the analysis of capabilities, formation of a competitive strategy of the company, ensuring its competitive advantages.

Liu Ming, T. Tunca
Problem definition: We explore consumer equilibrium and efficiency in group buying events, in which the unit price for a good or service decreases with higher number of consumer sign-ups. Specifically, we study the following questions: (i) How does the dynamic consumer sign-up equilibrium evolve during these events? (ii) Is there empirical evidence that employing group buying increases demand? If so, by how much? (iii) Are there profit gains from employing this mechanism and how can they be improved? Academic/practical relevance: Group buying events are becoming increasingly popular in certain markets, especially in China. Our study contributes to better understanding of this innovative pricing mechanism and its effects on demand and profits, and can help with more effective implementation in practice. Methodology: We build a continuous-time dynamic game theoretical model to study consumer behavior and solve for its equilibrium. We then apply it to data obtained from group buying events employed by a large retailer and use structural regression methods and data clustering to estimate and evaluate demand and profit effects. Results: We demonstrate that our theoretical equilibrium is a good fit for the observed consumer behavior. We empirically show that group buying discounts are not very effective in boosting demand for very low and very high base demand levels but can significantly improve demand for intermediate levels. We estimate that employing group buying improved the retailer’s product demand and profits by 16.6% and 11.1%, respectively, and with better price and discount selections, it can improve profits by more than 30% on average. Managerial implications: Our theoretical model provides insights into dynamic consumer behavior during group buying events and can be a basis for researchers and practitioners in studying and designing these events. Our findings provide concrete support for managers on benefits of employing the mechanism, and our data-based method and analysis provide guidance for improving performance.

Description The goal of this special issue is to disseminate novel, insightful, and relevant research that unifies concepts from finance, operations, and risk management. All submissions must articulate the operational component of the research and must have a clear finance or risk management connection (but not necessarily both). Potential research topics include (and certainly are not limited to): • Supply chain finance • Interactions between financial claimholders and operational claimholders of a firm • Moral hazard and asymmetric information problems that arise when financial and operational claimholders interact • Novel channels of financing operational decisions • Propagation of financial information in supply chains • The effects of operational decisions of firms (financial and nonfinancial) on financial markets and financial markets’ efficiency • The use of financial markets to inform operational decisions • Novel financial and operational risks and their management • Meaningful applications of data analytics to operations-finance and operations–risk-management interfaces • Insurance and supply chain risks • Risk issues and hedging in commodity procurement • Revenue management: Risk and financial implications of dynamic capacity planning and pricing strategies • Special finance and operations interface topics in industries such as financial services, energy, commodity trading, shipping, and logistics • Operational and financial approaches in managing disruption and catastrophic risks in global supply chains. Groundbreaking and boundary expanding ideas are particularly welcomed. Both theoretical and empirical analyses are encouraged. Submitted papers should feature original research contributions, display the rigor emphasized in the editorial statement of M&SOM, clearly articulate their managerial relevance, and obey the journal’s author guidelines. The review process will be handled by the guest editors and an ad hoc set of associate editors.

Babich, Panos Kouvelis","doi":"10.1287/MSOM.2015.0530","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1287/MSOM.2015.0530","url":null,"abstract":"Description The goal of this special issue is to disseminate novel, insightful, and relevant research that unifies concepts from finance, operations, and risk management. All submissions must articulate the operational component of the research and must have a clear finance or risk management connection (but not necessarily both). Potential research topics include (and certainly are not limited to): • Supply chain finance • Interactions between financial claimholders and operational claimholders of a firm • Moral hazard and asymmetric information problems that arise when financial and operational claimholders interact • Novel channels of financing operational decisions • Propagation of financial information in supply chains • The effects of operational decisions of firms (financial and nonfinancial) on financial markets and financial markets’ efficiency • The use of financial markets to inform operational decisions • Novel financial and operational risks and their management • Meaningful applications of data analytics to operations-finance and operations–risk-management interfaces • Insurance and supply chain risks • Risk issues and hedging in commodity procurement • Revenue management: Risk and financial implications of dynamic capacity planning and pricing strategies • Special finance and operations interface topics in industries such as financial services, energy, commodity trading, shipping, and logistics • Operational and financial approaches in managing disruption and catastrophic risks in global supply chains. Groundbreaking and boundary expanding ideas are particularly welcomed. Both theoretical and empirical analyses are encouraged. Submitted papers should feature original research contributions, display the rigor emphasized in the editorial statement of M&SOM, clearly articulate their managerial relevance, and obey the journal’s author guidelines. The review process will be handled by the guest editors and an ad hoc set of associate editors.","PeriodicalId":49901,"journal":{"name":"M&som-Manufacturing & Service Operations Management","volume":"17 1","pages":"271-271"},"PeriodicalIF":6.3,"publicationDate":"2015-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1287/MSOM.2015.0530","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66529256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
