This paper reports on an intervention intended to develop literacy amongst learners in a rural, state farm school situated in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN), South Africa. The principal and teachers in the school invited a group of volunteers, who named themselves the “Reading Grannies” into the school to model how to read an English text. The assumption was that listening to English read by first-language (L1) speakers, would expose learners to, for example, pronunciation, tone and expression and convey meaning better. In addition, both teachers and learners who were non-primary English speakers would develop an ear for the language and this would, in turn, help teachers to improve their teaching of English.

Growing from an invited workshop on interdisciplinary learning the authors led at their institution’s annual faculty retreat, this manuscript offers a framework for encouraging faculty from diverse disciplines to consider and evaluate their teaching, scholarship, and service in interdisciplinary ways. In this paper, we present an application of a process that integrates Repko’s (2008) suggested criteria for interdisciplinarians, Doran, Miller, and Cunningham’s (1981) conceptualization of S.M.A.R.T. goals, and McCoy and Gardner’s (2012) five key social structural components, in order to further cultivate faculty members' identities as interdisciplinarians. We conclude by summarizing participants’ comments in order to offer concrete examples of how the workshop yielded specific action plans for faculty members’ own interdisciplinarity within their teaching, research, and service activities. Taken together, this process challenges the traditional “silos” of academic work to help faculty reach across disciplinary boundaries. As such, this framework provides a roadmap for faculty and institutions interested in purposefully and meaningfully facilitating interdisciplinarity across a variety of academic settings.
在本文中,我们提出了一个整合Repko(2008)提出的跨学科者标准,Doran, Miller和Cunningham(1981)的S.M.A.R.T.

Using a transnational theoretical framework, this study explores U.S. families expatriating to Guanacaste, Costa Rica in search of educational alternatives to U.S. schooling. In order to meet the needs of this influx of U.S. families to the region, schools such as La Paz Community School in Flamingo, Guanacaste have emerged. This qualitative inquiry explores emergent themes from 16 semi-structured interviews conducted with US parents whose children attend La Paz. Findings reveal participants’ desire for a progressive educational alternative for their children that embraces a more collective vision of learning. For interviewees, frustrations with U.S. K-12 schools became symbolic of cultural criticism of US social norms and the desire to recreate a lifestyle removed from daily pressures in the United States.

Interdisciplinary research requires an approach different from research performed within a specific disciplinary framework. This paper reports on a study that was motivated by a perceived difference between how interdisciplinary research is done by scholars and how it is taught to students. A total of 21 semi-structured interviews were conducted with professional scholars who had presented at one of the Association for Interdisciplinary Studies recent annual conferences with the objective of exploring how professional scholars approach and perform interdisciplinary research. Three themes that arose from these interviews—1) the importance of an exploratory disposition, 2) a lack of concern for interdisciplinary boundaries, and 3) the importance of mentorship and community—have relevance in terms of how we design curriculum and educational experiences to prepare students to research complex, real-world problems that require an interdisciplinary approach.

This book is practical, guided, and forthright on what is needed to get started with the dissertation process. Its format is simple to and easy to read as it is broken down into chapters with information in each chapter outlined on its own page. This simple and uncomplicated format is a pleasure to read and it will not overwhelm doctoral students who are looking to move into this process of their academic careers. I strongly believe that authors Roberts and Hyatt have successfully accomplished their stated purpose for this text.

With the use of the Internet, mobile platforms, online commerce, and social media services, the footprints of human behavior can be easily recorded in the digital world, which generates data on an extremely large scale. Twitter as a big data social network becomes one of the most important sources for capturing up-to-date events happened in the world. Deriving topics from Twitter is important for various applications, such as situation awareness, market analysis, content filtering, and recommendations. However, topic derivation with high purity in Twitter is hard to achieve because tweets are limited to 140 characters. Previous works on topic derivation in Twitter suffer from low purity. In this paper, we propose corpus-based topic derivation (CTD) approach that combines a Twitter corpus and LF-LDA, which is a text processing model to identify topics and clusters of similar hashtags. We use asymmetric topic LF-LDA to obtain better purity of topics. Compared to intJNMF, a representative related work, the purity (F-measure) of our proposed CTD increases from 5.26% (27.81%) to 11.32% (34.28%) for 20 to 100 topics. We also propose a timestamp-based popular hashtags prediction (TPHP) approach by creating trending hashtags lists (THLs), which are lists of hashtags used by many users and make use of timestamps in tweets. We use the edit distance to find the difference between consecutive THLs. Then the difference can be used to calculate volatility to find how people react to real world events. Compared to Hybrid+, a representative related work, the mean average precision (MAP) of our TPHP increases by 19.45% (week-day), 15.08% (week-week) and 16.95% (month-week).
