In 2024, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Industrial and Commercial Power Systems (I&CPS) Department. It is my privilege to serve as the current department chair and to reflect on the history and impact of the I&CPS on the IAS, on IEEE membership in general, and on the electrical industry.

Born in Iran at the height of the Iran–Iraq war, Marjan Alavi recalled that there were very few toys available for kids to play with and the national television network only offered an hour of cartoon programming for children per day to help occupy them. Because of the strict Iranian regime, girls were not allowed to ride bicycles nor play on the street. Springing forth from the need for having a way to pass time as a little kid, Alavi and her younger brother started taking on do-it-yourself projects in her home storage room, an incarnation of the famous proverb, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” One of these projects was building a four-wheel cart to carry the garbage bin from the kitchen to the street. “We had a big front yard and sending the heavy garbage bin to the street was difficult,” she explained. Alavi added, “Although the cart did not turn well, it was quite exciting to turn our idea into reality and see it in action.”

Standards are at the core of many volunteers’ activities within IEEE, something that is especially true in the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS). As we know, IAS is a diverse Society, and it may surprise some people within our Society to learn just how critical standards activity is to the everyday activity of others.

In November 2022, the IEEE Board of Directors approved the formation of the new IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board (HTB). In January 2023, John Verboncoeur, then IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) vice president, appointed me, your humble IEEE Industry Applications Magazine editor, to serve as a TAB representative on the HTB. I was happy to accept the appointment. Over the course of the last year, I have been actively involved as a member of the HTB and learned through involvement in Board activities. In this article, I want to share with our readers a few details regarding why the HTB was formed, what the organization does, and how our members can get involved.

Contact with or exposure to electricity continues to be one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities and injuries in the United States. Between 2011 and 2021, there was a total of 1,201 workplace fatalities involving electricity reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), accounting for 6% of all workplace deaths. During this period, 69% of all electrically related fatalities happened in nonelectrically related occupations. Further, there has not been a significant decrease in the number of electrical fatalities since 2011. This article reviews each electrical incident reported to OSHA during this period to find the commonalities in fatal electrical incidents, determine if engineering controls or behavioral changes could have avoided the injury, and propose changes that can be made in the workplace and training to reduce the number of electrically related injuries in the United States.

Smaller rated modular converters are often connected in parallel, as opposed to the installation of a single converter with a high power rating. This is typically done to achieve a more reliable power supply with reduced cost. The work presented in this article is directed toward achieving proportional load power sharing between modular connected distributed generators (DGs) comprising inverters with common ac and dc buses in ac microgrids that are islanded. Two new schemes have been proposed to achieve this, and their performances have been compared with that of a recently proposed decentralized linear adaptive virtual impedance (AVI) variation strategy. The control schemes have been tested for a wide variety of loads and integrated seamlessly with the conventional and inverse droop control approaches for enhanced performance under varying network $text{X}/text{R}$ parameters. The novel strategies are also validated on a modified 13-bus system with three DGs using offline simulations on MATLAB/Simulink. Validations using controller-hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) setups are also carried out for meshed network conditions, different loads, and different DG power ratings and droop controller configurations.
