PurposeThis study develops and tests a model that explores how human capital impacts micro-business performance through the sequential mediation of new technology adoption and entrepreneurial bricolage.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional study was conducted on 508 women entrepreneurs engaged in micro-businesses in Malaysia. This study used partial least squares structural equation modeling to test the hypotheses.FindingsThis study demonstrates the significant impact of human capital on micro-business performance. It establishes a sequential mediation model in which technology adoption and entrepreneurial bricolage mediate the nexus of human capital–micro-business performance.Research limitations/implicationsThis study contributes to the theory by innovatively integrating human capital, new technology adoption, entrepreneurial bricolage, and microbusiness performance, drawing on the resource-based view and human capital theory. However, its cross-sectional nature limits causal inference, and focusing solely on women entrepreneurs in Malaysian micro-businesses may constrain novelty. Additionally, the reliance on self-reported data introduces bias, emphasizing the need for future research.Practical implicationsFostering entrepreneurial bricolage and embracing technology adoption can enhance performance. Business managers can optimize strategies by promoting continuous learning, innovative problem-solving, and technological advancements.Social implicationsThis study highlights the potential social and economic impacts of supporting women-owned micro-businesses in Malaysia. Policymakers can promote economic growth, employment, and community well-being by emphasizing innovation, human capital development, and technology adoption in Malaysia’s diverse ethnic contexts.Originality/valueThis study introduces a distinctive serial mediation framework to understand the impact of human capital on micro-business performance. It explores mediation dynamics, extends the knowledge of serial mediation in the human capital-performance relationship of microbusinesses, and contributes to the unexplored roles of technology adoption and entrepreneurial bricolage in Malaysian micro-businesses.

PurposeInnovation quality is a critical component of enterprise innovation. Prior research primarily focuses on company-level and external policy-level factors that affect innovation quality, while ignoring social-level factors. Based on institutional isomorphism theory, this study examines how the innovation quality of three-dimensional institutional equivalence, which is an important and unique reference group for firms to follow the “law of imitation of close preference”, affects the likelihood of firms' innovation quality.Design/methodology/approachThis study conducts firm random effects and industry/year fixed effects models using China's listed companies from 2002 to 2021.FindingsThis study finds that compared with the innovation quality of its other industry, community, or network peers, the innovation quality of three-dimensional institutional equivalence has a greater impact on firm innovation quality. Furthermore, technological intensity significantly increases the effect of three-dimensional institutional equivalence on focal company innovation quality, while financing constraints significantly attenuate this effect. Additionally, when there is no institutional equivalent, the innovation quality of network, industry, and community peers has significant positive effects on enterprise innovation quality. Heterogeneity analysis also indicates that, under the conditions of non-state-owned enterprises, a low regional legal environment, or low regional factor market development, three-dimensional institutional equivalence contributes significantly to firm innovation quality.Research limitations/implicationsThis study focuses on the effect of three-dimensional institutional equivalence on Chinese enterprises' innovation quality. Nonetheless, research samples from other countries are not considered in this study.Originality/valueThis study explores the impact of three-dimensional institutional equivalence on firm innovation quality within a systematic theoretical framework and incorporates firm attributes into this framework.

PurposeAmidst the Industry 4.0 landscape, organizations are increasingly harnessing cutting-edge technologies and embracing digital change to fuel innovation. However, the full potential of innovation cannot be realized without organizational readiness. This study explores how various dimensions of organizational readiness and innovation influence digital change and firm performance.Design/methodology/approachData were gathered via a survey of 303 managers from both state-owned and private-owned enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and analyzed utilizing partial least squares–structural equation modeling (PLS–SEM).FindingsOrganizational readiness positively influences both digital change and innovation. Additionally, innovation positively impacts digital change and mediates the relationship between organizational readiness and digital change. Furthermore, both innovation and digital change positively affect firm performance, whereas the control variable of ownership type has no significant correlation with firm performance. Finally, digital change mediates the relationship between innovation and firm performance.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the digital innovation literature by empirically testing the influence of organizational readiness on digital change and innovation within the context of Vietnam. By investigating whether innovation and digital change enhance firm performance, this study also addresses inconsistencies in the literature.

PurposeApplying the Stimulus–Organism–Response (SOR) model, this study aims to explore how AI-driven stimuli (e.g. ChatGPT adoption in entrepreneurship and perceived AI competencies) stimulate individuals’ cognitive organisms (e.g. digital entrepreneurial opportunity exploration and exploitation), and how these individually, congruently, and incongruently trigger their behavioral responses (e.g. nascent digital start-up activities).Design/methodology/approachUtilizing a sample of 1326 MBA students in Vietnam with a stratified sampling approach, multiple linear regression and polynomial regression with response surface analysis were used to test hypotheses.FindingsThe findings reveal that ChatGPT adoption in entrepreneurship and perceived AI competencies have a positive and significant impact on individuals’ digital entrepreneurial opportunity exploration and exploitation, which in turn, positively affects nascent digital start-up activities. Moreover, the study also reports that digital entrepreneurial opportunity exploration and exploitation can be congruently combined with each other to trigger the effects of nascent digital start-up activities.Practical implicationsSome valuable recommendations based on the findings have been provided for practitioners and policymakers.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the academic landscape by validating the SOR model within the context of AI adoption and entrepreneurship. It emphasizes the sequential processes of stimulus, cognitive responses, and behavioral outcomes, shedding light on nuanced effects in the digital entrepreneurial landscape.

PurposeAs little is known about the productivity levels of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) engaging with universities and the relative changes in productivity of SMEs subsequent to these collaborations, the paper examines the following questions: (1) Does the relative productivity of SMEs engaging in university collaboration differ from those that do not? (2) Are subsequent changes in firm productivity following university collaboration related to their initial levels of productivity?Design/methodology/approachThe paper utilises data on 254 SMEs from the Longitudinal Small Business Survey and uses two statistical techniques: First, bivariate tests of difference were used to inspect the relationships between productivity levels and whether the firm collaborated with a university to introduce its innovation. Second, ordinary least squares regressions were used to test whether the future productivity of SMEs that collaborated with universities was related to their initial productivity levels.FindingsThe analysis reveals that SME–university collaboration is unrelated to starting productivity. Furthermore, the analysis suggests a nonlinear relationship exists between the starting productivity of SMEs and their subsequent productivity following a university collaboration. Therefore, higher levels of subsequent productivity are observed among those SMEs where starting productivity was either relatively low or high, suggesting that collaborations have a transformative effect on SMEs with relatively lower initial levels of productivity and a maintenance effect for SMEs with relatively higher levels of initial productivity.Practical implicationsGiven the fact that the extant literature also suggests that, overall, university collaboration is beneficial, policymakers should strive to encourage greater levels of collaboration involving SMEs. In light of the evidence that SME–university collaborations can transform less productive firms, it appears unjustified for practitioners and policymakers to only consider stronger-performing firms to be included in such programmes.Originality/valueThe study contributes new theoretical and practical knowledge to the understanding of the role of firm productivity in predicting the proclivity of firms to collaborate with universities. Furthermore, as few studies have examined the impact of these collaborations on the subsequent productivity of firms that collaborate with universities, this paper fills an existing gap in the literature.

PurposeScholars increasingly focus on digital transformation as a key strategy for incumbent firms to gain competitive advantages. Meeting digital transformation commitments presents challenges, requiring the application and the reconfiguration of dynamic capabilities. To address this need, this research proposes a framework of dynamic capabilities and its microfoundations to assess the opportunities and challenges regarding digital transformation, involving three dimensions: Digital sensing, digital seizing, and digital reconfiguring.Design/methodology/approachThis study employed a descriptive qualitative empirical approach, encompassing a sample of eight companies. Data triangulation was achieved through a combination of in-depth semi-structured interviews and secondary data.FindingsThe research provides evidence that data-driven culture fosters digital transformation and proposes the following new microfoundations: “Analytics for the customer experience journey” and “Digital analytics innovation management”, the internal barriers “Leadership without digital skills” and “Lack of strategic human resources management for digital transformation”, and the internal enablers “Defined strategy for digital transformation” and “Data-driven culture”. PurposeCustomer experience management (CXM) and Innovation are two important capabilities on which businesses compete today. However, research to date has not empirically investigated their potential symbiotic relationship. Specifically, does better CXM improve innovation; similarly, does better innovation improve CXM? As a starting point, our research focuses on the former: how does effective CXM correlate with innovation success?Design/methodology/approachData was collected by querying marketing managers from 251 goods and services firms involved in CX design and implementation. Managers answered questions related to their innovation efforts, customer experience management initiatives, and innovation outcomes. Cluster analysis was used to identify a taxonomy of CXM approaches contingent upon environmental factors (market turbulence, competitive intensity, and technological turbulence).FindingsOur research found that higher levels of CXM engagement result in greater innovation success – i.e. higher success rates, revenues, and profits from new products or services. In addition, we find that there are three distinct approaches to CXM: (1) Extensive CXM approach (43% of firms in our sample); (2) Moderate CXM approach (39%); and (3) Limited CXM approach (18%). Firms with an extensive CXM approach operate in intensely competitive environments that are characterized by very high technological turbulence. Firms that employ a limited CXM approach operate in environments with the lowest levels of competitive intensity and technological change. Market turbulence did not factor into the choice of CXM approach.Originality/valueTo our knowledge, our study is the first to provide empirical evidence that firms adopt different CXM approaches. Further, we identify factors external to the firm that are considered when selecting these CXM approaches; namely, market turbulence, competitive intensity, and technological turbulence. Finally, our findings related to CXM approaches and innovation success indicate that managers should make investments in CXM to help improve innovation.

PurposeThis study aims to explore the impact mechanism of the degree of innovation failure on breakthrough innovation in Chinese listed companies, and examines the moderating effect of the company’s own knowledge-based capabilities.Design/methodology/approachBased on organizational learning theory and using the innovation failure data of invention patents from Chinese A-share listed companies on the main board from 2003 to 2017 as research samples, this study constructs and examines a comprehensive framework and its impact on breakthrough innovation regarding “what kind of innovation failure will promote breakthrough innovation”, focusing on innovation failure, enterprise knowledge base, and breakthrough innovation.FindingsEmpirical research has found a U-shaped relationship between innovation failure and breakthrough innovation. In other words, both a low level of failure and an extremely high level of failure can significantly promote breakthrough innovation in enterprises. Furthermore, when the depth of enterprise knowledge is high, it further strengthens the non-linear relationship between innovation failure and breakthrough innovation.Originality/valueThe research results enrich the study of the failure predicament and breakthrough innovation of Chinese technology innovation enterprises, revealing effective paths for Chinese technology innovation enterprises to get rid of the passive situation of innovation failure, and providing theoretical support and practical reference for “breaking new ground and achieving breakthrough innovation”.
