Purpose This paper aims to delve into the critical examination of retractions in virology to identify the underlying factor that led to the retraction of scientific publications in this specialised domain. Further, this study offers insights into the impact of the retracted publications in the scholarly world vis-à-vis citation and Altmetric indicators. Design/methodology/approach The top 100 highly cited retracted articles from virology category were taken from the Web of Science (WoS) database. The Retraction Watch database was used for knowing the reasons for retraction for each retracted publication. The citation and Altmetric score of retracted publications were noted down from WoS and Altmetric.com databases, respectively. Journal Citation Report was used to note down the impact factor of the journals that have published these articles. Findings “Misconduct” (57.73%) is the most prevalent reason for the retraction of publications followed by plagiarism (18.55%) and journal issues (14.43%). The retracted papers are cited even after their retraction. Around 70.52% citations were received before and 29.47% after retraction. The highest number of retracted papers was published in the Journal of Virology (14) and Journal of Chemistry (10). High-impact factor journals such as Lancet, Cell and Nature each own one retracted paper. The study found dissemination of these publications through social media platforms with highest social media mentions (394) followed by policy and patents mentions (373) and news and blog mentions (300). Practical implications The research delves into understanding the reasons behind the retraction of virology papers and the impact of these publications through citation and Altmetric analyses. Its impactions include bolstering quality control in virology research, maintaining trust in scientific literature. Citation and Altmetric analyses offer deep insights into the broader impact of retracted papers, informing policy and publishing practices to uphold scientific integrity in virology. Originality/value This study addresses a specific and crucial aspect of scientific research retractions within the field of virology. While retractions have been studied in broader terms in scientific research, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no such study has been conducted in the scientific field of virology.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the role of specific human resources (HR) practices (leadership, employee relations, employee safety, rewards and incentives and career opportunities) on organizational performance in the context of the Middle Eastern market, with a specific focus on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) hotel sector. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive research methodology was used for this study. Two distinct questionnaires were crafted: one targeting 338 hotel employees who completed the HR practices survey, and the other for 109 general hotel managers who completed the organizational performance survey. All respondents were from five-star hotel establishments in the UAE. To validate the hypotheses, a multidimensional approach was adopted. This paper first applied factor analysis to understand correlations and groupings among the factors. This paper then undertook validity assessment by examining factor loadings, average variance extracted and the reliability values for all parameters. Discriminant validity was also carefully evaluated. Findings The results found that there is a direct correlation between leadership, employee relations and career opportunities, with boosted organizational performance. Contrary to prevalent assumptions, the data showed no discernible link between employee safety, rewards and incentives and the actual performance of organizations. The results highlight the crucial role of social exchange in interpreting the indirect relationship between HR practices and organizational performance. This insight offers a fresh perspective on the often-discussed 'black box' in HR research. Originality/value The novelty of this study lies in its intricate exploration of human resource management practices within a region experiencing swift socioeconomic transformations due to factors such as the significant expatriate presence and economic diversification. By underlining the significance of social exchange as a mediating factor, this research significantly contributes to the ongoing dialogue on HR-performance relationships, offering insights for both theoretical and practical applications in HR activities formulation in the context of the UAE.

Purpose Space tourism is currently experiencing significant attention because of its rapid and burgeoning development in the present era. This surge has resulted in an unprecedented growth in publications dedicated to unravelling the intricacies of space tourism. However, there is a conspicuous absence of a large-scale bibliometric analysis focusing on space tourism research from 1993 to 2022. Therefore, the aim of this study is to fill this research gap by examining and mapping the scholarly output published across the world in the spectrum of space tourism over the past 30 years (1993–2022). Design/methodology/approach A corpus of 7,438 publications pertaining to space tourism published from 1993 to 2022 was gathered from the Web of Science Core Collection. Accordingly, bibliometrix package in R and VOSviewer software were used to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. Findings The current study highlights a significant surge in publications related to space tourism, indicating a heightened scholarly interest and a significant paradigm shift in its exploration. Scott M. Smith, affiliated with National Aeronautics Space Administration Johnson Space Center, emerges as the most prolific author. Leading journals in disseminating space tourism research are Acta Astronautica and Aviation Space and Environmental Medicine. Keyword analysis revealed hotspots such as “space flight”, “simulated microgravity”, “weightlessness” and “stress”, while research gaps include “skylab”, “shuttle”, “cartilage”, “herpes virus” and “herniation”, offering potential avenues for exploration. Research limitations/implications This study’s implications empower stakeholders with actionable insights and deepen the understanding of the evolving landscape of space tourism research, fostering an environment conducive to continuous exploration and innovation in this burgeoning field. Originality/value This study enriches the understanding of global space tourism research and offers valuable insights applicable to a diverse audience, including researchers, policymakers and industry stakeholders. Purpose This empirical study investigates the potential impact on freedom of expression arising from the accumulation of user-generated content on the web. The purpose of this study is to serve as a valuable reference for countries and regions that have not yet implemented web archiving due to similar concerns. Design/methodology/approach To achieve the goals, the author conducted a web-based survey experiment using sentiment analysis of book reviews as a representation of general topics. This approach enabled the author to objectively examine whether the expression of content undergoes changes in accordance with social conformity theory. Findings The study’s findings suggest that, at least for general topics, the observed chilling effect is minimal at best. This provides support for the proposition that it is advisable to proceed to the subsequent phase, where more sensitive subjects can be thoroughly explored in the context of web archiving and its associated chilling effects. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first attempt to conduct a survey experiment addressing potential chilling effects resulting from the collection of user-generated content. Notably, the measurement of chilling effects remains contentious and comes with inherent limitations, adding a nuanced perspective to the discourse.

Purpose Knowledge-hiding behavior can lead to adverse consequences for individuals and organizations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between personality traits, knowledge-hiding behavior and job performance in the banking sector in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach This study used a quantitative approach to test the proposed research model using a linear structural modeling method. Data were collected from 291 employees working in commercial banks in Vietnam using a direct survey instrument. Findings The conscientiousness personality trait exhibits a negative relationship with explicit knowledge-hiding behavior but demonstrates a positive association with tacit knowledge-hiding behavior. Openness to experience is negatively correlated with both explicit and tacit knowledge-hiding behaviors. Explicit knowledge-hiding behavior is negatively related to job performance, whereas tacit knowledge-hiding behavior has a positive relationship with job performance. Knowledge-hiding behavior played an intermediary role in the relationship between conscientiousness and job performance. Originality/value The extent to which employees engage in knowledge hiding depends on whether the knowledge is explicit or tacit. The impact of knowledge hiding on job performance is contingent upon the nature of hidden knowledge, whether explicit or tacit, and can either diminish or enhance job performance.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices and corporate ethical behavior on implicit cost of equity (COE) using integrated reporting quality (IRQ) as a mediating variable in European companies belonging to the environmental, social and governance (ESG) index. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a panel data set of 540 European firms from the ESG index from 2013 to 2022. The data were collected from I/B/E/S and Thomson Reuters ASSET4 database and analyzed using the structural equation model to test hypotheses. Findings In the instance of ESG European firms, the findings indicate that CSR practices and corporate ethical behavior are negatively related to the COE. From the result of the Sobel test, this study indicated that IRQ has only indirect mediation on the relationship between CSR, ethical behavior of the company and implicit COE. Practical implications The findings have some policy and practical implications that may help regulators and managers in improving the COE and helping companies envision their future growth opportunities in a context where responsibility, ethics and disclosure are central to corporate valuation. Using the implicit COE is a better estimate of shareholder requirements in the context of ESG companies. Originality/value This research concentrates on ESG companies since they are more likely to contribute to environmental protection, which attracts responsible investors. Furthermore, the findings may be useful to worldwide managers and investors who use responsible practices as a criterion in their decision-making.
