A new diminutive plant, Filiformorama simplexa gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Late Silurian (late Pridoli) Wutubulake Formation of north Xinjiang, China and is placed tentatively in the rhyniophytoids. This plant has naked axes and a dichotomous branching system. A body, interpreted as a sporangium, forms the termination of one branch of a dichotomy, and the other daughter branch continues to grow and dichotomizes further. Most complete sporangia are circular, but some are reniform or tongue-shaped, with an asymmetric base.

Well-preserved internal and external moulds of a shumardiid species are described from the late Furongian (Late Cambrian) “Fengshan Formation” at Poben, Napo, southwestern Guangxi, which is close to the type locality of Shumardia orientalis, the type species of Eoshumardia. All features observed on the internal moulds indicate that the new material is definitely S. orientalis, whereas the morphology of the external moulds indicates that S. orientalis should be referred to Koldinioidia. The change of generic assignment of the type species means that Eoshumardia is a junior synonym of Koldinioidia.

The first Chinese Ordovician series was erected by Lee & Chao (1924). Since then, many regional Ordovician series and stage names have been established and mostly published in Chinese. The present study is a review of these regional units with a discussion of their definitions and correlation to the international standard. Among them, the Ichang series, Neichiashan series, Chientangkiang series, Yushanian stage and Dawanian Stage are most important; all regarded as regional stage divisions in China. The Lower, Middle and Upper Ordovician Series with their new definitions (Webby 1998) are now accepted in China. The global stage names, which have been approved (Tremadocian and Darriwilian), and “Caradocian” and “Ashgillian”, which are potentially to be part of the global standard, should be formally used in China. The Darriwilian Stage is defined in a global stratotype section near Huangnitang, Changshan, SE China. Only two regional stage names, the Yushanian and Dawanian, still remain since the international correlation of these two units has not yet been resolved. The main type Ordovician successions of China are identified, revised and regional correlations briefly outlined.

The type species of Phoidagnostus, P. limbatus Whitehouse, 1936, is redescribed on the basis of further excavation of the holotype which has revealed an associated pygidium. This also demonstrates that the species Hypagnostus varicosus Opik, 1961 is a junior subjective synonym of P. limbatus. Phoidagnostus is closely related to Toragnostus and Cotalagnostus.

Comparison of ontogenetics suggest that the Middle Cambrian Xystridura evolved from the Lower Cambrian species Hsuaspis bilobata by changes in the rate or timing of development of characters during ontogeny. Extension of the juvenile growth period delayed maturation, or hypermorphosis resulted in exaggeration of normally slow, early holaspid growth patterns within the rapid, late meraspid growth stage, producing a marked progradation of the glabella in Xystridura. Forms referable to H. cerastes from the upper Early Cambrian Cymbric Vale Formation of New South Wales appear to show the beginnings of this hypermophic trend.

The tooth enamel structure of several specialized marsupial carnivores belonging to the Polyprotodonta and Diprotodonta were studied using scanning electron microscopy and are described in detail for the first time. Within the Polyprotodonta Dasyurus shows a simple schmelzmuster with radial and aprismatic enamel only, whereas the highly specialized teeth of Sarcophilus and Thylacinus show more complex schmelzmuster consisting of several enamel types. Both differ from each other and from other marsupials. Sarcophilus combines radial enamel, tangential enamel and stripes, Thylacinus combines radial enamel, tangential enamel, irregular enamel and stripes in its enamel. In both species the schmelzmuster varies within the dentition. Thylacoleo carnifex is the only carnivorous species within the dominatly herbivorous group Diprotodonta. A new peltasperm, Scytophyllum bonettiae sp. nov., is described from the Middle Triassic Cortaderita Formation, San Juan, Argentina. The new species is characterised by having medium to small monopinnate, imparipinnate, lanceolate, bicoherent fronds with a free bipinnate pattern of venation, and lumps on the rachis. Recovered specimens display juvenile to adult foliage. The new taxon, together with other species, characteises late Middle Triassic-early Upper Triassic terrestrial flora from western Argentina.

Eastonian trilobite faunas of the Gordon Group in Tasmania include the new species Ceraurinella oepiki, Erratencrinurus trippi, and Pliomerina trisulcata, as well as a reedocalymeninid probably allied to Sarrabesia Hammann & Leone, 1997. Ceraurinella and Erratencrinurus have not previously been reported from Australia, the former being predominantly Laurentian but also known from NE China, the Himalaya, and Vietnam, and the latter mostly Baltic/Laurentian. Peri-Gondwanan species of Ceraurinella appear to form a clade, within which Tasmanian and Indian (central Himalayan) taxa are closest relatives.

The cosmopolitan, Jurassic to Recent, bivalve Acesta (Limidae) is documented from Australian Cretaceous (upper Albian) rocks in the lowermost section of the Mackunda Formation of Queensland. These specimens from Landsborough Downs, Flinders Shire, represent an endemic new species, herein named Acesta (Acesta) backae n. sp. Acesta (A.) backae n. sp. was a shallow-water suspension feeder that inhabited the Cretaceous Australian epicontinental sea of the Great Artesian Basin. Although hinge details of Acesta (A.) backae n. sp. are wanting, this new taxon is most closely allied with Acesta? sp. of the Miria Formation of Western Australia and can clearly be discriminated from other Cretaceous Austral forms.
尽管缺少Acesta (A.) backae n. sp.的铰链细节,但这个新分类单元与Acesta (A.) backae n. sp.最接近。
