Environmental Disasters and Property Values: Evidence from Nepal’s Forest Fires

This article uses satellite data on real-time active fire locations to evaluate the effect of forest fires on property values in Nepal. Results show that an additional unit increase in fire radiative power from last month’s forest fires causes a 0.61% decrease in residential property values. Property values decline by 4.48% for every additional unit increase in the number of forest fire incidents over the past year. These estimates suggest that policy makers should prioritize wildfire-risk awareness and fire-prevention programs in areas with higher levels of declined property values associated with recurring forest fire incidents.

Data from citizen science (CS) projects (and some social media) can offer selected samples with extensive information about human interactions with the natural world. Independently, we elicit levels of engagement with the eBird project from members of the eBird CS project and from a general-population sample. The general-population sample allows an ordered-probit model to explain propensities to engage with eBird at different levels, which we transfer to predict selection-correction terms for our independent sample of eBird members. We illustrate our method with a question posed only to our eBird-member survey sample about the radii of their individual spatial consideration sets for typical one-day birding excursions.

We use citizen science eBird data to investigate the effect of deforestation on birdwatching across Mexico. Using detailed data on individual trips reported to eBird, we construct annual count data on visits to 1,810 Mexican municipalities from 2008 to 2016 to examine how deforestation affects visitation patterns. We find that a municipality, experiencing an increase in deforestation equivalent to the average deforestation over our study period, would see birdwatching visits decrease by 4.4% a year. The results also provide an application of citizen science data using an underused source of information on economic behavior in an otherwise limited data environment.

Loss Aversion in Farmland Price Expectations

Farmland price expectations play a critical role in farm investment decisions, yet previous studies suggest that market experts’ expectations are not rational. That is, market experts do not make efficient use of all available information. This article tests the degree to which expectations are consistent with rational expectations, under symmetric and asymmetric loss, based on aggregate expectations from Purdue Farmland Values and Cash Rent Survey between 1979 and 2019. We find robust evidence that farmland market experts are averse to overpredicting farmland price increases. When this asymmetry is considered, farmland market experts are shown to be rational loss minimizers.

Residential Mobility, Brownfield Remediation, and Environmental Gentrification in Chicago

We examine whether moving behavior contributes to the correlation between race and pollution using a residential sorting model and data on neighborhood demographics in Chicago. We find that black residents are less likely to stay and thus more likely to be displaced compared with white residents in neighborhoods after brownfields are cleaned up, contributing to environmental gentrification. This provides evidence that race and pollution become increasingly correlated because of moving behavior, with people of color less likely to move toward cleaner neighborhoods. Cleaning up pollution without a policy that acknowledges residential mobility may thus fail to correct environmental injustice.

Nonconvex Transaction Costs and Land Rental Market Participation in Malawi

We assess how nonconvex transaction costs constrain access to and participation in the land rental market by smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. The theory suggests a dynamic externality due to such transaction costs and that orchestrated participation can reduce such costs and enhance future participation. We use dynamic random effects probit and Tobit models with balanced panel data from Malawi to assess participation on the tenant side of the market. We observe that initial and earlier land rental market participation significantly increases participation in the subsequent years, consistent with dynamic nonconvex transaction costs and possible entry barriers in the market.

Nudging Away from Plastic Bags with Charitable Donations

To respond to the environmental problems posed by disposable plastic bags, several mechanisms exist, such as bag taxes and bans, but such policies are infeasible in several U.S. states and municipalities. This study uses a social quasi-experiment to examine the effect of a voluntary token-donation program, which reduces disposable plastic bag use by providing a small charitable donation incentive. We find that the token-donation program reduces the probability of disposable bag use by 11.4–12.9 percentage points, representing about 30%–34% decrease in bag use. Our results demonstrate effective mechanisms to reduce plastic bags exist without government-mandated policy.

We estimate hedonic valuation models of local open space separately for 215 cities in the eastern United States and derive city-specific marginal willingness to pay (MWTP). We then examine variation in MWTP and city-level determinants. Valuation is largely local–relatively large changes in income or existing conservation lead to modest changes in MWTP–suggesting validity of benefit transfer across regions. However, geographic features that naturally limit development correlate with MWTP. As a result, we examine geographic features as instrumental variables and find that on average steep slope and water/wetlands yield valuation coefficients of opposite sign, consistent with a local average treatment effect interpretation
