This study underscores the significance of home-country events in shaping connections between diaspora and their country of origin. Focusing on immigrants from Turkey who migrated to the Netherlands in 2012/2013, our panel-study sheds light on post-migration developments concerning interest in Turkish politics and sense of identification with Turkey. Leveraging the 2016 failed military coup as a natural experiment, we apply also rally effect theory. Our findings reveal that political interest increased in the aftermath of the coup attempt and stronger so among immigrants who supported the AK-party. Conversely, identification with Turkey declined, while remaining stable among migrants identifying as Turkish majority members. This research demonstrates the importance of examining responses to home-country events, elucidating on variations observed across subgroups.

Abstract According to literature, biased information processing increases with political sophistication. The logic behind this relationship is that political sophisticates possess greater cognitive skills and knowledge to defend their prior beliefs. Although political sophistication can be understood as a multidimensional concept, existing research primarily uses general political knowledge as a proxy to assess it. Therefore, we introduce a more rigorous measure of sophistication that gauges individuals’ ability to justify their attitudes with substantive and well-elaborated arguments and put the classic measure of political sophistication to a test. We study these mechanisms in a direct-democratic setting via an online survey, in which 898 Swiss-German voters are exposed to a tailored counterargument on a political referendum. Our results indicate that individuals with higher levels of sophistication evaluate counter-attitudinal information less favorably and hold more stable opinions. While we did not find support for the hypothesis that sophistication leads to selective exposure to consonant information, our analysis points to a reverse mechanism: individuals with lower levels of sophistication exhibit a higher likelihood of exposure to dissonant views. Notably, these results align with the trends reported for general political knowledge and corroborate the validity of using general political knowledge as a proxy for political sophistication.

Abstract In the algorithmic society, personal privacy is exposed to ever-growing risks since the platform requires huge volumes of data for algorithm training. Globally, ordinary users, faced with the formidable platform and black-boxed algorithm, usually feel powerless against elusive privacy invasion and then have set about turning to third-party proxy institutions like the government and legislature to counterbalance the algorithmic privacy security framework. Starting from it, the present study examines what triggers users’ support for third-party proxy control, and a moderated serial mediation model has been estimated based on a Chinese cross-sectional sample (N = 661). Our research suggests that users’ algorithm awareness and their presumed algorithmic privacy risk to self and others (elders and minors) significantly predict their support, and serial mediating effects of the presumed algorithmic privacy risk can be more pronounced at the higher level of perceived effectiveness of platform policy. These findings help to identify the crucial role of algorithm awareness, which equips users to navigate risk and behave as responsible digital citizens, and also extend the influence of presumed influence model and the control agency theory in algorithmic contexts, making contributions in both theory and practice.

Abstract How does interpersonal exposure to immigrants influence citizens’ opinions about immigrants? The Intergroup Contact Theory (ICT) famously predicts improved attitudes under certain circumstances. However, research on the population innumeracy phenomenon predicts that this same exposure may worsen demographic misperceptions about immigrants. The current study seeks to analyze these contradictory possibilities with data on native-born citizens’ encounters with non-EU immigrants from the 2017 Eurobarometer survey. The analysis considers a wide variety of exposure contexts and generates hypotheses about which will matter most for each outcome based on cognitive availability processes and the optimal conditions outlined in the original ICT. The results indicate that intergroup exposure increases both positive attitudes toward immigrants and incorrect perceptions about immigrants. However, context matters. Those with exposure to immigrants among their primary networks or through their participation in sport, volunteer, and cultural activities exhibit the most pro-immigrant evaluations. Those with exposure through their neighborhoods and workplaces exhibit the most inflated perceptions. The study concludes by considering the implications of these findings for future research.

Abstract While there is lively debate on whether higher education cultivates support for immigrants in North America and Western Europe, there is little discussion on the extent to which the relationship generalizes beyond these continents. In light of Japan’s growing reliance on foreign workers, increase in university enrollment rates, as well as efforts to internationalize universities over the last half-century, we explore the relationship between university education and Japanese attitudes toward immigrants. Using two surveys asking an overlapping set of questions in 2009 and 2022, we find the relationship between university education and pro-immigrant attitudes varies by generation. Otherwise positive connections are significantly weakened for Japanese who entered universities in the 1990s through 2000s. Even though Japan is a modern democracy with well-developed higher education institutions, these institutions do not always correlate with more supportive attitudes toward immigrants. Our findings underscore the dynamic nature of higher education’s role in shaping public opinion outside of North America and Western Europe.

Abstract Mobile phone interviews are becoming an increasingly appealing mode of data collection in low- and middle-income countries. Therefore, we used data from 36 countries to examine mobile phone coverage of adults aged 15–49 years. We paid special attention to the (1) coverage rate (percentage of individuals who own at least one mobile phone) versus penetration rate (mobile phone subscriptions per 100 inhabitants), and (2) proxy-covered population (i.e., persons who do not own mobile phones but are potentially accessible through devices owned by other household members). Study findings suggest that (1) penetration rates notably overestimate mobile phone coverage of the population; (2) mobile phone coverage structure varies substantially; (3) mobile phone owners are more likely to be males, urban residents, literate, married, and relatively wealthy; and (4) proxy-covered adults are distinct with regard to demographic characteristics and survey outcomes in comparison to directly covered and not-covered adults. This study informs practitioners about the current coverage structure in several low- and middle-income countries and promotes proper procedures for studying coverage structure before implementing mobile phone interviews in those countries. Finally, this study introduces the term proxy-coverage and advocates for approaching the proxy-covered population to reduce noncoverage bias, especially in settings where mobile phone sharing among family members is common.
