Increased incarceration rates of women in small county jails raises questions about how women experience reentry in often under-resourced rural areas. This study examined links between transportation, supervision requirements, and risk for women living in rural towns during probation. Travel data of 25 women and thematically analyzed interview data of four probation officers and five women representing 11 rural towns in a Northeastern State are understood using the vulnerable populations conceptual model (VPCM). Findings confirmed high travel need with limited transportation access, which corresponded to risk in mothering roles, housing, and relationship safety. Policy implications and future research are discussed.

Results from a photovoice study with 13 Lakota women found that there were numerous barriers (e.g., finding stable housing, finding a job) to reintegration following incarceration and that trauma, grief, and loss were identified as prominent challenges throughout attempts at reintegration. Despite tremendous aversities, Lakota women identified their ability to connect with people, nature, and culture as key sources of their strength and resilience. This research highlights the urgent need for comprehensive, culturally grounded, strengths-focused initiatives as well as structural policy change that will support Lakota and other Indigenous women’s reintegration into their communities.

Women’s incarceration has been increasing over the past several decades, representing an incredibly high-need population. Jailed women have the highest rates of substance use and mental health issues compared to other criminal legal populations. Their trajectories into crime differ from men, often attributed to trauma, substance use, and traditional heterosexual partnerships. Using a thematic analysis and data from 42 interviews with jailed women, the current study examines women’s decision to engage in substance use and continuation or cessation of use. Findings contribute to the literature on gendered-pathways by describing their perspectives. Findings inform recommendations for future research and policy implications.

Public perceptions of the severity of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) play a crucial role in its prevention. This study examines the impact of multiple factors related to the scenario and respondent characteristics on the perceived severity of IPVAW. To achieve this, a factorial survey design was implemented using a non-probability-based sample in Spain ( N = 1007). The results indicate that 90.3% of respondents rated the scenario as severe. The perceived severity was influenced by both the details of the scenario and the characteristics of the respondents. These findings can inform the design of targeted awareness campaigns.

Whereas much of the research on mothers in reentry has focused on the resistance strategies these mothers develop to combat the stigma they face, we explore how formerly incarcerated women’s narratives of motherhood reflect their resilience. Using in-depth interviews with 15 formerly incarcerated women, we describe participants’ “narrative resilience”—their focus on their strength and perseverance as they told stories of adversity. Narrative resilience facilitates a novel understanding of formerly incarcerated women’s construction of mothering—one that reveals how women incorporated experiences of structural disadvantage into their mothering identities by framing these experiences as evidence of their tenacity.

Scholarly inquiry into the experiences of women researchers engaged in ethnographic fieldwork is a growing area of study. While important to feminist criminology, most of the literature addressing this topic comes from sociology and anthropology. Drawing on qualitative ethnographic research in the United States, conducted in gendered, sexualized and “taboo” spaces, this study examines two women’s experiences. Findings indicate that women researchers engage in significant emotional work to not only gain access to these research sites and spaces, but they rely on several different techniques to mitigate potential harm to their person, including situating the experience outside of the research.

The ongoing conflict in Venezuela has created significant risks for women and girls. Conflict affected populations often face higher levels of vulnerability and risks of gender-based violence (GBV) at home, in transit and at destination countries. Venezuelan women face GBV at all stages of their journey. Due to their often-irregular or undocumented status in host countries, many women lack legal access to healthcare and work which leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and GBV. Using the continuum of violence model by Kelly (1988; 2012) as well as Menjívar & Walsh (2017; 2019), this work underscores the complex ways in which gender, nationality and legal status interact with each other to shape patterns of migration and settlement. Focusing on the two largest receiving countries in Latin America: Colombia and Peru, this work also outlines how the structural, symbolic and interpersonal nature of GBV crosses borders amid the challenges of conflict, displacement and xenophobia.

This study quantitatively summarizes existing empirical research on the relationship between specific mental disorders and recidivism among justice-impacted women using meta-analysis. Eighteen studies were included following a comprehensive literature search. Results indicated that depression, PTSD, psychiatric history, and presence of any mental disorder (relative to no mental disorder) were independently and significantly associated with small increases in recidivism rates. Anxiety, psychosis-related and unspecified personality disorders, and self-harm/suicidality were not significantly related to recidivism. Findings support the gender-responsive position that some mental disorders are criminogenic and correctional practice should be guided by holistic, mental health- and trauma-informed approaches.

This article responds to recent calls for a ‘sensory criminology’ by offering a multi-sensorial analysis of gender-based violence (GBV). We examine both the often-discussed external senses as well as the more marginalized internal senses and explore how emotion, the broader criminological ‘atmosphere’ of GBV and the shift in atmosphere during the Covid-19 pandemic are implicated in women’s experiences of street-based sexual harassment and sexual assault. By analysing over 140 stories of GBV during the Covid-19 lockdowns, we evidence the scope and value of a fully multi-sensory criminology.
