Health systems increasingly rely on strong transition-to-practice support for early-career nurses. This article describes how a community-based academic medical center improved Nurse Residency Program (NRP) effectiveness by implementing structured Monthly NRP Manager Forums to enhance leader engagement, communication, and alignment. The model strengthened curriculum relevance and improved responsiveness to nurse resident needs. Survey results demonstrated higher-than-benchmark leader perceptions. This approach offers a replicable strategy for advancing NRP impact and early-career nurse retention.

The purpose of this study was to compare newly licensed nurses' role transition experiences and evaluate the impact of a nurse residency program before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Outcomes were measured using the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey, participant satisfaction, and program completion rates. Results showed a modified in-person residency program positively impacted participants' transition during an unprecedent time. Nursing professional development practitioners were encouraged to adopt innovative strategies to address transitional challenges.

A smooth transition into practice for newly hired nurses benefits the organization and the patients it serves. Preceptors support these nurses and require training to effectively perform this duty. No standardized, systemwide nurse preceptor training course existed at our large, multihospital healthcare system. A systemwide workgroup collaborated to develop a standardized curriculum and implemented an engaging hybrid learning program that participants and nursing professional development practitioners find highly satisfactory.

The transition from academia to practice requires new nurses to integrate knowledge, competence, and professional role expectations within complex systems. This manuscript describes a nurse residency program redesigned using the Professional Role Identity Formation Theory, evidence-based competencies, and systems thinking. Through phased learning and structured preceptor support, the program facilitated real-time application of theory to practice, strengthening clinical judgment and professional formation while advancing competency-based readiness for independent nursing practice.
