Sustaining a competency program across a large healthcare system presents significant challenges, especially with acquisitions and periods of high turnover. This article describes how a large healthcare system revitalized a faltering competency program and created structures to ensure ongoing sustainability and leader engagement. After implementation of these strategies, the number of departments that completed competency processes increased from 397 to 798.

Feeling Valued as a Mid-Career Nurse: A Scoping Review.
IF 1.1 Q3 NURSING Pub Date : 2024-09-01 Epub Date: 2024-08-02 DOI: 10.1097/NND.0000000000001078

Retaining mid-career nurses is a priority to address the nursing shortage exacerbated by COVID-19. Nurses are more likely to stay if they feel valued. This scoping review revealed a variety of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and external factors that influence how mid-career nurses feel valued. Nursing professional development practitioners can influence satisfaction and retention by implementing mentoring and professional development programs for nurses and managers. More research is needed to understand the impact of the mid-career nurse-nurse manager relationship.

The Impact of Nurse Residency Programs on Patient Quality and Safety Outcomes: A Review of the Literature.
IF 1.1 Q3 NURSING Pub Date : 2024-09-01 Epub Date: 2024-06-06 DOI: 10.1097/NND.0000000000001058

Schools of nursing are struggling to prepare registered nurses to practice in today's complex healthcare settings. Nurse residency programs are a good solution to support the transition to practice. Nursing education leaders must be informed of the nursing quality and safety outcomes of nurse residency programs. This literature review provides insight and evaluation of the evidence related to the impact of nurse residency programs with substantial evidence of nurse outcomes and minimal patient outcomes.

Development and Implementation of a Procedural Sedation Course for Registered Nurses.
IF 1.1 Q3 NURSING Pub Date : 2024-09-01 Epub Date: 2024-07-22 DOI: 10.1097/NND.0000000000001071

Procedural sedation is the administration of medication to obtund, dull, or reduce the intensity of pain or awareness associated with a therapeutic or diagnostic procedure. Because registered nurses play a key role in ensuring patient safety during procedural sedation, it is essential they have the requisite knowledge and skills to provide safe, quality care. This paper describes the development, implementation, and outcomes of a course designed for nurses providing care to patients undergoing procedural sedation.

Content Validation for a Medical-Surgical Orientation Competency Assessment Instrument.
IF 1.1 Q3 NURSING Pub Date : 2024-09-01 Epub Date: 2024-08-16 DOI: 10.1097/NND.0000000000001081

Demonstration of competency is an essential component of nursing orientation in the practice environment. Standardization of the assessment with a validated instrument supports high-quality care and patient safety. This study engaged six nurse experts to establish content validation for a newly developed competency-based assessment framed by the domains of the national standard for nursing education. Two rounds of rigorous review resulted in a scale content validity index universal agreement calculation of .891, indicating that all items were evaluated as relevant for inclusion in this comprehensive measure of registered nurse clinical competency in the medical-surgical specialty.

Virtual reality (VR) is an innovative teaching strategy for professional development using computer-generated, three-dimensional images in an interactive virtual environment. Self-reported survey responses of nurses who used VR in orientation and the nurse residency program demonstrated improved knowledge, skills, and confidence. VR provides an innovative and engaging educational medium for learning that may have implications for future clinical practice and research.

Nursing professional development practitioners are faced with meeting the onboarding needs of internationally educated nurses (IENs) recruited to work in the United States. The purpose of this secondary data analysis study was to assess differences between demographic characteristics, orientation, and onboarding variables and IEN's length of orientation and retention to a healthcare system. A significant difference in the length of orientation by unit assigned, degree type, and retention were discovered.
