Teaching the primary curriculum outdoors 在户外教授小学课程

The organisation Learning through Landscapes has a long and illustrious history of supporting schools using outdoor contexts for teaching. They have previously self-published valuable teaching resources as well as offering continuing professional development and advice on the development of school grounds, but this volume published by SAGE with a title that includes ‘teaching the curriculum’ will potentially reach more teachers who are not already familiar with their work. Teachers new to taking learning outside may not have come across the organisation, and many of these may be focused on ‘the curriculum’ rather than ‘the outdoors’. As such, it represents a great contribution to the growing body of work that is looking to support teachers not already engaged with teaching outdoors to take their first steps towards embedding outdoor learning as part of their regular teaching practices. Embedding outdoor learning within school’s regular curricular planning was identified as a key enabler in the Natural Connections Demonstration project (Waite et al., 2016)

Effects of outdoor adventures on emerging adults’ well-being and connection with nature 户外冒险对新兴成年人幸福感和与自然联系的影响

While well-being and health benefits of nature are increasingly recognized, young people’s decreasing contact with nature has raised concerns. The emerging adulthood period is seen as critical for ongoing participation in outdoor recreation. This mixed methods study examines how participation in an outdoor education course, including canoeing and hiking trips, affects participants’ perceived well-being and connection with nature. The study is based on survey and interview data collected from Finnish vocational students ( N = 16) in 2020. The results showed that the outdoor adventures had positive impacts on participants’ mood, restoration, and life satisfaction. Participants highlighted the benefits on social relationships and group cohesion. The trips increased participants’ nature-related curiosity and motivation to engage with nature. Providing opportunities for contact with nature as part of the school curriculum in vocational training as well as in other studies might provide an effective means of promoting well-being and connection with nature in emerging adults.

Predicting the future of experiential and adventurous learning in the metaverse 预测未来的经验和冒险学习在虚拟世界

This essay defines the metaverse and its many uses. It then draws parallels to adventure and examines the elements that make adventure a unique learning medium. Next, it predicts the future based on the present and the past and discusses the drawbacks of this process and its outcomes. Finally, it concludes with a few observations and expectations around adventure not being easily replaced by the metaverse in the near future, but long term advances might tell a different story.
