The starting point of the paper is the Greek understanding of poetry, which became the norm in antiquity and has maintained such a status well into post-antiquity. According to this understanding, poetizing is a measuring or a putting of words into a measure (Gr. metron), while poetry is an art of metrical speech binding and thus of versification. The rhythm in Greco-Roman poetry seems to have been captured in a measure that was a quantitative measure, the duration of syllables. But already in ancient metrics rhythm began to separate from meter, although it remained subordinate to it as a systemic structure. When in late antiquity the distinction between long and short syllables, on which the quantitative system of versification was based, became inaudible, the liberation from the meter began under the sign of rhythm. “Rhythm” in Middle Ages described the structure of poems in the vulgar languages of post-antique Europe and established itself in the Renaissance as the primary term for the syllable versification system. However, the imitation of the meter continued in European poetry, with demetrification and remetrification alternating. Therefore, modern versiology illustrates the development of European versification with the movement of sea waves, which is not equable as in nature: the meter is in decline, while the rhythm is steadily increasing. In the picture it paints, the final liberation of rhythm from the meter is represented by the free verse. Nonetheless, at the end the paper returns to the beginning with the warning that rhythmos originally did not refer to something audible, but to the mostly visible momentary form of something unstable. On this basis it finally tries to define what a poetic rhythm is.

Članek na podlagi pojmovanja, da je za modernizem odločilna »predstavna bližina družbene revolucije« (Anderson) v perspektivi teorije svetovnih-sistemov obravnava neoavantgardistično radikalizacijo modernizma v šestdesetih in sedemdesetih letih 20. stoletja. Pri tem se osredotoča na literarno in teoretsko polje kapitalistične Francije v primerjavi s pospešenim razvojem obeh področij v socialistični periferiji svetovnega modernizma – v neuvrščeni in samoupravni Jugoslaviji. Interpretira povezovanje eksperimentalne literature in (post) strukturalistične teorije v Sloveniji »dolgega leta 1968« od prvotnega zavezništva neoavantgardnega tipa do razkola sredi sedemdesetih let. V sklepu nakaže divergentne interpretacije zgodovinskega procesa med poskusom študentske revolucije 1968 in letom 1989, ko globalizirani kapitalizem prevlada socializem, modernizem pa preide v postmodernizem.

Članek obravnava vpliv zahodnega ezoterizma oziroma okultizma na življenje in delo Williama Butlerja Yeatsa in Fernanda Pessoe. Pri tem je posebna pozornost posvečena pesniški tehniki »kreativne disociacije« od lastnega jaza ali »depersonalizacije«, kot je svojo heteronimijo označil Pessoa. Gre za bistveno skupno potezo Yeatsove in Pessoove poetike, ki ni le paradigmatsko modernistična, temveč tudi poudarjeno ezoterična. Kot ezoterične razumemo različne tokove, ki so se skozi zgodovino razvili vzporedno z organizirano religijo na eni in razsvetljenskim racionalizmom na drugi strani ter s tem tvorijo t. i. »tretji steber zahodne kulture«. Yeatsovo teorijo maske so v veliki meri definirale tudi ideje, ki jih je pridobil v svojih letih članstva v Hermetičnem redu Zlate zore, na nastanek Pessoovih heteronimov pa je vplivalo njegovo prakticiranje spiritizma, medijstva in avtomatskega pisanja. Delo obeh avtorjev tako lahko razumemo kot modernistični umetniški izraz, ki se je izoblikoval v tesnem kontaktu z zahodnim ezoterizmom.

Članek tematizira podobo balkanskega človeka barbarogenija, kot jo zasnuje eden od osrednjih predstavnikov jugoslovanske avantgarde Ljubomir Micić. Ideji barbara-genija in balkanizacije/barbarizacije Evrope se razvijeta v reviji Zenit, prav tako pa sta zastopani v Micićevi poeziji in prozi (roman Barbarogenij Decivilizator). Podobne sintagme najdemo tudi pri Srečku Kosovelu in akterjih ljubljanske revije Tank. Le-te kažejo na oblikovanje posebne lokalne identitete, ki vzpostavlja tudi nacionalni kontekst njihovega dela. S tem pa pričajo tudi o izvirni misli in umetnostno-zgodovinski specifiki jugoslovanske avantgardne struje, povezane s specifičnimi družbeno-političnimi dogodki v prvih desetletjih 20. stoletja. Funkcija avantgardističnega vračanja k nacionalnim koreninam je sprevračanje hierarhiziranega razmerja do Zahoda z radikalno avtostereotipizacijo. Tako internacionalizacija/kozmopolitskost kot radikalno izpostavljanje nacionalnih karakteristik se kažeta kot strategiji za transgresijo identitet in vzpostavljanje Balkana kot pluralne kulturne identitete s svojo ustvarjalno močjo znotraj jugoslovanske avantgarde.

The article conducts a comparative discussion on the strategic poetic and political similarities/differences between the respective contexts of neo-avantgarde and retro-avant-garde practices in relation to aesthetic, artistic, and cultural revolutions. I juxtapose two revolutionary potentials and effects of their actualisation: the utopias and projections of the international revolution relating to the “new sensibility” and the unity of “art and life” of 1968, and several projects and practices that undermine totalitarian systems, from punk cynicism to the national revolutions of 1989 that overthrew real socialism in the Eastern and Central Europe. In my comparative discussion I focus on two specific cases in Slovenian art and alternative cultures, highlighting the position of “experimental poetry,” “new sensibility,” and “conceptual art” of the OHO group, active between 1966 and 1971, and the position of “political cynicism” and “retro-avant-garde art” in the Neue Slowenische Kunst movement founded in 1984.

Razprava obravnava medkulturnost kot problematiko literatur v intra- in intersubjektivnem ter v intra- in interdiskurzivnem stiku, obenem pa osvetljuje nekatere možnosti za nadgradnjo slovenske literarne zgodovine in kanona. Osredotoča se na čas po osamosvojitvi, ko se je po eni strani povečalo zanimanje za raziskovanje preteklosti, po drugi strani pa so se že začele kazati smernice homogeno usmerjenega knjižnega (globalnega) trga. Slovenija se je po osamosvojitvi še vedno soočala z dvema prelomnicama: kako ohranjati lastno identiteto, kar je bilo takrat prvič povsem v rokah državne avtonomnosti; in kako poskrbeti za identiteto ter prepoznavnost malega naroda in male književnosti po padcu v hitro rastoči globalni knjižni trg. Na podlagi modela medkulturne literarne vede lahko vidimo, kako se lastno in tuje prepletata na vseh ravneh človekovega delovanja in posledično delovanja družbe ter kakšen vpliv ima to na izgradnjo dinamične identitete in dinamičnega literarnega kanona.

This article intends to demonstrate how female characters in Ulysses and The Blind Owl are deprived of full means of communication and expression. The connection with the concern with alienation in these two novels is that it is in the representation of female language that they show how characters-female characters and by extension women in general-are alienated from and marginalized by the masculine voices of the novels’ narrators and focalizers. It is noticeable that the narrative style of Ulysses and The Blind Owl, although very innovative and experimental, still allocates almost no space to female voices and language, with the major exception of Molly Bloom’s interior monologue. With the benefit of more recent perspectives, Molly’s narrative can be read as deriving in some ways (the lack of punctuation being one major indication) from the semiotic and subverting the established discipline of language use (the symbolic), thus, as an example of écriture féminine.

1968 was a watershed year not only for the new left but even more so for the rise of the New Right. It turns out that, if 1968 “prepared” 1989 as the next turning point in European and world history, it was probably more through the new right’s forging of ideas that would eventually provide ideological justification for illiberal democracies in Central and Eastern Europe. Yugoslavia is an important site in this history not only because of its early exposure to the ideas of the new right through the work of the painter and publicist Dragoš Kalajić but also because in his seminal book The Philosophy of Parochialism (1969), Radomir Konstantinović anticipated the rise of the new right and offered a penetrating critique of its fundamental premises.

Članek primerja dva svetnika, člana kraljevske družine v anglosaškem kraljestvu Northumbriji, brata in sestro, sv. Oswalda, kralja mučenca, in sv. Aebbe, opatinjo. Članek razpravlja tudi o začetnih zadržkih Cerkve v Northumbriji glede vzpostavitve kulta sv. Oswalda (634–642), za kar si je prizadevala Oswaldova družina ob podpori prebivalstva. V nasprotju z Oswaldom, ki je bil kljub globoki vernosti izrazito vpet v posvetno življenje, je bila njegova (pol)sestra Aebbe (ok. 615–683) dejavna kot opatinja in ustanoviteljica samostanske skupnosti v Coldinghamu (današnja južna Škotska). Zavzemanje za Oswaldov kult se je začelo že v prvih letih po njegovi smrti, medtem ko se je Aebbin kult začel uveljavljati šele v dvanajstem stoletju, toda drugače kot sv. Oswald Aebbe ni nikoli dosegla mednarodne prepoznavnosti, vseeno pa je bila zelo cenjena krajevna svetnica zaradi ozdravitvenih čudežev.
