The Case of Mleh (1170–1175): Cilician Armenia between Nūr al-Dīn and Manuel I Komnenos Mleh案例(1170-1175):Nūr al- d<e:1> n和Manuel I Komnenos之间的西里西亚亚美尼亚

The present paper discusses the reign of the Rubenid lord of Armenian Cilicia, Mleh (1170–1175), and examines his relations with the two great powers of the period, the Byzantine Empire and the Zengids under Nūr al-Dīn (1146–1174). Through examination of the contemporary sources of the period, the following conclusions may be drawn: Firstly, Manuel (1143–1180) did not send an expeditionary force against Mleh. On the contrary, Mleh faced and defeated the local Byzantine garrisons. Secondly, the Crusaders waged a campaign against Mleh in 1173, which was partially successful as it forced the Rubenid lord to recognize the suzerainty of the king of Jerusalem, albeit temporarily. Thirdly, a consequence of the Crusader success was the Byzantine re-conquest of the cities of the Cilician Plain. Finally, Mleh’s status as a client of Nur al-Din does not relate to his religious identity. The sources make it clear that he remained a Christian.

The dīwān (book of poems) of the eleventh-century polymath and Hebrew poet of Granada, Samuel ha-Nagid, contains unexpected musical aspects. This article reveals a formerly unknown comment by the poet’s son, which indicates that the shorter poems of the book were all set to music and performed in the poet’s court. The article discusses the implications of this discovery and its importance for understanding both ha-Nagid’s poetry and the musical practices of al-Andalus. Unique literary phenomena such as poem-cycles and “twin poems” that share similar structure are examined through their relations to the early Andalusian nawba (suite) and to the practice of composing contrafacta respectively.

Materia Medica in a Multilingual Context: Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine and Its Latin Translation of Book II

For centuries, Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine was a crucial text used in medical studies across the Islamicate area as well as in Latin Europe. It was first translated from Arabic into Latin by Gerard of Cremona (d. 1187) and his students in Toledo. This article focuses on the second book of the Canon which is dedicated to the description of simple drugs. It is in this part of the Canon that we find many references not only to borrowings from Ancient Greek but also from Eastern material. A careful comparison of the Arabic text and the Latin translation demonstrates that the Latin translation was often imprecise, and while it eliminated some but not all obvious Muslim religious references, it did not try to adapt the material to the Latin readership in other ways.

Abstract This article focuses on the western cult of two saints, Cyrus and John, which was founded in Egypt – where Sophronios of Jerusalem composed the anargyroi ’s hagiographic dossier in the seventh century – and quickly spread to Italy. The analysis of the manuscripts containing the Latin translations of Sophronios’s texts allows us to trace the diffusion of this hagiographic corpus in Rome, and to link its transfer and first reception in Italy to a broad Mediterranean migration.

Abstract This article examines the drafting of land contracts and the evolution of local property law in key regional centers of power during the transition from Islamic to Christian rule in eleventh- and twelfth-century Iberia. Through the analysis of a range of Arabic and Latin property land sales preserved in the ecclesiastical archives of Toledo and the Ebro valley, the following study looks for signs of potential legal and documentary diffusion taking place as a result of the Christian conquests of the Middle and Upper Marches of al-Andalus. The paper explores the relationship between property and its transfer, on the one hand, and the emerging post-conquest documentary cultures, on the other. It studies borrowings between Latin and Arabic land documents, some of which can be associated with Andalusī property and contract law. The article links this transfer of knowledge to the legal and economic interests of the religious institutions that preserved the Arabic documents, highlighting how new dioceses and monasteries reclaimed the rights and benefits associated with former mosques. Such findings are framed as part of the active preservation and engagement of local property knowledge and Islamicate documentary practices, and their recycling for the post-conquest management and reorganization of the land.

Interconnection and Separation: Medieval Perspectives on the Modern Problem of the “Global Middle Ages”

This article argues that “global” is both too vague and too misleading a term to help conceptualize the Middle Ages. It is used for too many diverse phenomena, and criticism of the term by modernists has not been taken on board. Instead of borrowing and distorting this concept to make it fit, we should look at the nature and range of both interconnection and separation in our period, and create concepts based on our source-material. The medieval evidence shows that through the narrow channels, through the segmented and broken-up chains of communication, knowledge and objects can still flow. Superficial similarities to modern connectivity (for example trade) may hide real divergence, such as the motivation for the spice trade, which was related to searching for earthly paradise. Remoteness and separation were seen and described by medieval authors, but in reality both separation and connection were more ambiguous phenomena. Limited interconnection between areas of the globe did not dampen universal aspirations for the spread of Christianity. Finally, the mechanism of declared Christian religious superiority contrasted with the way in which Christianity gobbled up other traditions, ingesting and transforming them in its own image, while refusing to acknowledge this incorporation. This creophagous attitude characterized Christian relations to Judaism, Arabic science and pagan philosophy: strong interconnection coexisted with explicitly stated separateness.

Food in the Frankish Levant: a Case Study of Cultural Borrowing

The Crusader movement called for the liberation of the Holy Land and the expulsion of non-Christians. Yet in reality, the Frankish states of Edessa, Antioch, Tripoli and Jerusalem, established as the result of the Crusades, were to become heterogeneous societies, with a plurality of ethnic and religious groups ruled by a Latin Frankish elite. In recent decades, historians, art historians and archaeologists have turned much attention to the study of influences and cultural borrowing in artistic, architectural, religious, military, governmental, administrative and intellectual activities that resulted from almost two centuries of co-existence of the Latins with the local population in the Levant: Eastern Christians, Muslims, and Jews. This article strives to contribute to this ongoing discussion by analyzing some aspects of everyday life in the Frankish Levant, focusing mainly on foodstuffs and food habits. The study of preservation of culinary traditions, consumption of new food products, as well as technological and administrative changes related to food production, are valuable tools in understanding coexistence and cultural borrowing in the Frankish Levant.

The study of preservation of culinary traditions, consumption of new food products, as well as technological and administrative changes related to food production, are valuable tools in understanding coexistence and cultural borrowing in the Frankish Levant.","PeriodicalId":52521,"journal":{"name":"Medieval Encounters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48324988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: Increasing numbers of women enter medical school annually. The number of female physicians in leadership positions has been much slower to equalize. There are also well-documented differences in the treatment of women as compared to men in professional settings. Female presenters are less likely to be introduced by their professional title ("Doctor") for grand rounds and conferences, especially with a man performing the introduction. This study reviewed the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (CSOHNS) meetings from 2017 to 2020 to determine the proportion of presenters introduced by their professional title and whether this varied by gender.

Methods: Recordings from CSOHNS meetings were reviewed and coded for introducer and presenter demographics, including leadership positions and gender. Chi-squared tests of proportion and multivariate logistic regression was used to compare genders and identify factors associated with professional versus unprofessional forms of address.

Results: No significant association was found between professional title use and introducer or presenter gender. Female presenters were introduced with professional title 69.6% of the time, while male presenters were introduced with professional title 67.6% of the time (P = 0.69). Residents were introduced with a professional title with the most frequency (75.8%), while attending staff were introduced with a professional title with the least frequency (63.0%) (P = 0.02).

Conclusions: The lack of gender bias in speaker introductions at recent CSOHNS meetings demonstrates progress in achieving gender equity in medicine. Research efforts should continue to define additional forms of unconscious bias that may be contributing to gender inequity in leadership positions.
