Abstract The Rhetoric of Sustainability: Territorial Indicators and Field Research in Alta Valtellina This paper compares statistical data on environmental sustainability with the governmental actions of the territory, which really affect the protection of the landscape and ecosystem elements. Case study is the Alta Valtellina, and the work focuses on Lago Bianco at the Gavia Pass, a remnant specimen of arctic tundra in the Stelvio National Park, exploited to capture water for artificial snow-making on ski slopes. This research shows the socio-cultural and economic dynamics underlying the relationship between mountain environment, protected nature, tourism and population, which recount experiences of vulnerability, lack of protection and conflict.

Abstract Flowing Waters, Lasting Stories: the Lambro River as an Archive of Collective Memory The Lambro River has profoundly shaped Lombardy’s landscape and local communities throughout history. This paper aims to investigate the connection between the river and the identity of these communities by analyzing how changes in landscape have been reflected in both tangible and intangible cultural expressions. Studying this heritage offers insights into how the Lambro has been perceived and integrated into the local community’s identity over time, becoming a fundamental element of their sense of belonging. To achieve this objective, this research uses art, literature, and music, which not only portray the region but also provide valuable insights in the evolution of collective identities across generations.

Abstract Potentialities and Criticalities of the Isole Ciclopi Marine Protected Area The paper analyses the Isole Ciclopi Marine Protected Area facing the hamlet of Aci Trezza within the municipality of Aci Castello in the Province of Catania, Italy. It aims to describe emerging potential and critical issues, posing the question of which actors are involved in the governance. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research revealed that the main problem is the non-implementation of the so-called command-and-control method. After establishing rules and prohibitions, resources for control and imposition of sanctions are lacking. A positive note is the increase in youth volunteer activities of cleaning the sea from plastics, showing a sound interest in the environmental education proposed by cultural and environmental associations.

Abstract Can Well-being Be Measured? Reflections on the Spatial Dimension of the OECD Better Life Index Indices developed by international research organizations assume value in the adoption of new policies. This paper aims to present the role that these indices have taken on in order to investigate the methodology adopted and understand the role that the space between the indicators used takes on. Specifically, the Better Life Index that the OECD develops is examined, analyzing and mapping the indicators used. Some critical issues emerge, and in particular the absence of the spatial dimension among the parameters considered. The paper reflects on the relevance of this gap and highlights the importance of the relationship with space in assessing well-being.

Abstract Hyper-Places and Urban Fabrics: The Role of Shopping Centers in the Lombardy Territorial Context Moving from a reflection related to urban transformations that have occurred over the years the paper reflects on the generation of new urban spaces – which are configured as strong attractors, connectors, and diffusers – capable of encompassing various individual practices as well as the functions of a society as a whole. Assuming this framework, the contribution focuses on the role of shopping centers – with particular attention to the role assumed by Oriocenter in Lombardy (Italy) – as hyper-places. In fact, since the early 1990s, such structures have undergone profound changes, developing both through an increase in size and through a diversification of commercial attractors, promoting renewed flow trajectories and leading to increasing territorial complexity.

Abstract Proposals for Intertwining Nature and Culture in Protected Areas: the Musica in Quota Festival In a context where nature and culture always appear separate, this contribution aims to overcome this dichotomy, proposing a musical festival as an example. Musica in Quota takes place among mountains and protected areas of the Verbano Cusio Ossola province, in the northwest of Piedmont. In the various events of the traveling exhibition, nature becomes the theatre of musical performances. The particular attention to the environmental, social, and economic needs of the local context makes it a virtuous case of programming able to promote the reappropriation of protected spaces through sustainable and participatory cultural practices that translate into active conservation.

Abstract Protected Water Areas and Illegal Activities on Gabon’s Coastline Since 2002, Gabon has been committed to a policy of biodiversity conservation through institutional and legal efforts to regulate and manage maritime areas. Interest in the maritime and coastal domains has led to the creation of Aquatic Protected Areas (APAs), ecosystems that are home to unique reservoirs of biodiversity. Thanks to these tools, Gabon aims to sustainably exploit and conserve its marine and coastal resources. However, this determination is undermined by a variety of illegal activities. The aim of this article is to reveal the main illegal uses perpetrated in the APAs and the means to counter them. For this purpose, a literature review was carried out, as well as a fieldwork based on semi-directive interviews with administrative agents, economic promoters and local residents of APAs.

Abstract Yellowstone is globally recognised as the world’s first national park, but the depth of its meaning goes beyond the history of nature conservation. This paper presents the park as an assemblage of landscapes, memories and popular environmental discourses. It interweaves the debate around Yellowstone as a landscape idea with an analysis of its representation in popular culture, from The Yogi Bear Show to the more recent Yellowstone television series. Coupled with personal and subjective memoryscapes, the Yellowstone assemblage is presented as capable to inform the global debate on the role of protected areas, especially in relation to climate change, tourism and recreation, as well as matters of natural heritage kinship and belonging.

Abstract The Protection of a Fragile Rural Territory: Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela (Portugal) Protected areas are not only characterized as laboratory spaces for the conservation of the environment but also freed from human presence; rather, they are territories where it is essential to guarantee the balance between the protection regime and local socio-economic and cultural activities. This is especially relevant in areas where human presence is constantly shrinking, often associated with a continuous remodeling of the use of space. This paper explores the evolution of protected areas in Portugal, focusing on the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela, in order to understand the relationship between the establishment of the protected area and the rural vocation that has historically characterized the territory of the most important Portuguese mountain range.
