Abstract What Protected Areas in Globalisation? Reflections from the Agro-Pastoral Landscapes of the Maiella National Park This paper aims to reflect on a possible interpretation of the role that protected areas could play in the globalization. Starting from the example of the Maiella National Park (Italy), the paper aims to highlight the role of anthropic action as a key factor that throughout history has contributed to the generation of the current forms of ecosystems, characterized in this context by high levels of biodiversity, especially from the botanical point of view. All this provides an opportunity to reflect on the constructive role played by humankind in ecological dynamics, and so to develop a critical discussion of the significance of protected areas as peculiar places of globalization, capable of conveying crucial ethical values.

Abstract The More-than-Cyberplace Approach for Environmental Activism: Insights from the Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve (Ireland) Eco-warriors are a group of activists who have been fighting for many years to protect ecosystems threatened by human action. This paper aims to examine ex-post the case of the oldest natural reserve in Ireland, Glen of the Downs, which provided a context in which an innovative example of activism in Europe has been developed, especially since 1997, marking a change of direction from environmental blocks to safeguard biodiversity and the ecosystems. The collection of secondary data offered by documents and videos of that period offers a numeral of arguments to reflect the need for a multi-disciplinary and multi-scalar interpretative framework. Therefore, the conceptual category of more-thancyberplace is suggested for the interpretation of the case study.

Senegalese Associationism in Italy: Social Practices and Territorialisation Dynamics. The article focuses on Senegalese associations in Italy, trying to identify the territorial factors that influenced its evolution, in particular the development of new projects and stronger, multi-located and institutionally recognized relational networks. The survey conducted in different Italian contexts brought out a diversified geography of Senegalese associations which offers some consideration about the possibility of considering these associations as real agents of territorial development, both in territories of origin than in those of destination, as well as evaluating the role that local policies, in the field of inter-culture, can play in encouraging the active participation of these organizations in local public life and in strengthening the territorial social capital.

This article studies the spread of SARS-CoV-2 at a local level in Sweden and the role of geographic features that might have influenced the path of the virus. Then, the differences between rural and urban contexts have been analyzed. Results showed that the Swedish rurality seems to have been hit less by the pandemic than the ones of many other Western countries, possibly because of its more advanced stage of rurbanisation and a better institutional government and planning of its former rural areas. On the other hand, other Western countries have chosen models which appear closer to the American one, in which the social and economic structure of the urbanized areas, from the hamlet to the metropolis, is disappearing in favour of a sprawl model that could have boosted the infection.

International Students and Second-Generation Immigrants in the Italian University System. Foreign students have been little studied as a mobile population, despite their increasing importance among human flows in the contemporary globalizing world. This paper article aims to reflect on the international migratory presents in Italian Universities. This important phenomenon due to the globalization has grown the interchanges of foreign students in our educational system and it has inserted students with migratory background. The study explores the strengths and challenges of the presence of these two types of youth. Within this framework and thanks to the collection, storage and processing of data, the article offers an overview of the relationships among the Italian University, international students and students with foreign background.

Russian Women in Liguria and their Perception of (Plural) Place Identity. The article proposes the results of qualitative research on the migration of Russian women to Liguria from the 1990s and onward. The research is based on 20 structured interviews in order to investigate the perceptions of the (plural) identity of place of the women under study, taking into consideration their place of origin and their places of migration. The facets of place identity, mentioned above, are expressed in the sense of belonging to the places of origin and migration, the sense of place and its impact on the sense of belonging to the new living context, feeling rooted in the mentioned places and identification with them.

People interpret unfamiliar compounds by combining the component concepts into a new, complex concept. When the constituents have foreign roots, as happens in English neoclassical compounds and in Japanese words borrowed from Chinese, interpreters must first assign a semantic gloss to each component. The decoding of peninsula and 半島 follows such a pattern. But whilst construing and processing peninsula and the Latin paene īnsula as ‘almost island’ is relatively simple, inferring the denotation of 半島 is more complicated because gloss assignment yields the opaque ‘half-island’. In the end, though, the interpretative process succeeds in this case as well, thanks to world-knowledge validation, and allows interpreters to understand that ‘half-islands’ are not islands at all.

The Reverse Flow: A First Geographical Overview of Returning Italians. By historical tradition, the emigration of compatriots is a structural phenomenon. However, as the number of expatriates increases over the last fifteen years, an objectively new fact becomes increasingly evident: a progressive growth of repatriations. Starting from an examination of the geographical literature on the subject, this contribution presents an initial geographical reflection on the areas of origin and the places of new residence of Italians who have returned in recent years, disaggregating the available statistical data (registry entries from abroad of Italian citizens made available by ISTAT and AIRE data provided by the Ministry of the Interior) at a provincial level.
