There are several mythical representations of the visceral connection of mothers to their children, transmitted by the Greek and Latin literary tradition. This text aims to present some of them based on two distinct themes: 1) motherhood as a threat to the world of men; and 2) the mother’s experience of losing her children. The textual corpus under discussion includes excerpts from Homer’s Iliad, Hesiod’s Theogony, and the Homeric Hymn to Demeter

n medieval literature, female characters can affect the course of events by speaking before an audience. These women are often maternal characters. In this article, I will analyze a reconfiguration of this paradigm by considering the example of the matriarch Irmenschart, depicted in Willehalm (c. 1210-20) by the Middle High German poet Wolfram von Eschenbach. An astute speech characterizes the intervention of the maternal character in the narrative in the imperial court for the benefit of her son, through whom she intercedes and whose conflict she mediates. This will rehabilitate the manly virtue of the members of the künne, restore her family’s identity and, finally, ensure material assistance to Willehalm’s cause. The mediator and intercessor nature that commands Irmenschart’s role in the plot will also be perceived in the light of a possible connection to the Christian and Marian model of the mater mediatrix

Do amor ao ódio: alguns apontamentos sobre figuras maternas na narrativa cavaleiresca quinhentista portuguesa

This article focuses on the analysis of some outstanding maternal figures present in three chivalric texts of the Portuguese sixteenth century (Crónica do Imperador Clarimundo, Palmeirim de Inglaterra and Memorial das Proezas da Segunda Távola Redonda). It is intended to start from a typological approach to the representation of motherhood, analysing first the mothers of the main heroes, to, from there, highlight the figuration of two mothers who diverge from this typology: Zaraina and Ifranasa. These two figures present in the text of Jorge Ferreira de Vasconcelos stand out for their antagonistic relationship with their children, Florisbel and Masília. By combining dimensions that go beyond the simple maternal figuration, we will also draw attention to the way in which these two figures stand out in a global perception regarding the representation of female figures in chivalric texts from the 1500s

The new social rules established by the covid-19 pandemic have pressed an immense contingent of women to their physical and emotional limits. Línguamãe (mothertonge) is a reading and writing workshop about Literature and Motherhood created by two mothers, writers, and expatriated Brazilian women: one in Portugal, the other one in the USA. Both occupying the same territory of extended isolation (the postpartum followed by the pandemic). Although isolated, women, especially women-mothers, even more women-mothers-writers remained together, speaking the same language, because being a mother is a nationality within itself. Reading and writing about motherhood during this dystopian moment does not save them from the difficulties, but invites them to find in Literature a refuge that helps them pass through the storm, safeguarding, creating connections, and serving as an artistic elaboration tool

He was severely punished along with his sons and supporters with the punishment of damnatio memoriae and the confiscation of the right to property. Among the siblings who strove the most for the rehabilitation of the defeated are, not D. Henrique, but rather D. Isabel, fraternal sister of the former regent and friendly aunt of her nephews, who, although living in Burgundy, was always close to the Avis family. She immediately took the initiative, through her experienced ambassador, Jean Jouffroy, to reverse the situation of punishment that had befallen her family. As the court resisted the ambassador’s appeals and the legal justifications, having made few concessions to his pleas, she welcomed her brother’s children to Burgundy and projected them to international careers — stabat amǐta (paternal aunt)

The paper analyses the representation of the mother figure in thirteen short stories by Lygia Fagundes Telles, published between 1949 and 2007. Proving her status as a major figure in contemporary Brazilian literature, Lygia poses the question from multiple perspectives, also using a wide diversity of styles and tones. In some of the narratives, more or less common and reasonably peaceful situations are enacted, but there are others that could illustrate a psychiatry or psychoanalysis manual. The set, by the way, provides material that could serve as a basis for a history of contemporary women

This article proposes a reading of Maria! Não Me Mates, que Sou Tua Mãe! (1848), by Camilo Castelo Branco, with a special focus on the narration instance. The analysis of the narrator’s perspective, configured by the rhetorical pathos, will lead to a reflection on this Camillian narrative in the light of theodicy attempts as investigated by Immanuel Kant. Since the sapiential book of the Old Testament, the problem of theodicy has arisen when the good man Job, facing a catastrophe of unusual evils, perseveres in his belief in God. The Kantian reading of the Book of Job, a substantial hypotext in Camillian fiction, will allow us to elucidate this particular narrative in its theodicy bias, namely based on Kant’s critique of doctrinal theodicy

The analysis of the narrator’s perspective, configured by the rhetorical pathos, will lead to a reflection on this Camillian narrative in the light of theodicy attempts as investigated by Immanuel Kant. Since the sapiential book of the Old Testament, the problem of theodicy has arisen when the good man Job, facing a catastrophe of unusual evils, perseveres in his belief in God.
