The passion of the apostle James the Greater is one of the main cycles of his hagiography. It is worth recalling the various medieval texts and traditions that recreated the narrative, although the Passio Iacobi and later the Legenda Aurea should be singled out as the most important sources for the iconographic elaborations. There is also room for the miracle exercised from the thaumaturgic condition granted to James by Christ: the healing of a paralysed man is the decisive motif for the conversion of the scribe Josiah. However, the iconographic representation of this event was not very abundant in the Romanesque and Gothic centuries, as opposed to the baptism of Josiah and, above all, his beheading together with the apostle himself. Apart from possible theological considerations, the lesser fortune of this figurative register must also have been influenced by the synthetic nature of the iconographic cycles themselves, therefore its evocation was necessarily implicit in the inclusion of the conversion-baptism of Josiah

In Judaism, the sun, moon and stars are observed to determine the date of the seasons and festivals or devotional times. In the Hebrew calendar, the beginning of a new day is marked at sunset and when the first stars of the night appear. Among the objects that mark dates expressing the joy of memorable times are the Hanukkah candlesticks, objects of devotion and piety, indispensable for the Festival of Lights and commemorating the rededication of the second Temple in Jerusalem. In this study we present several devotional candelabra and identify their relationship to the Hebrew ritual and present them as Jewish ex-votos.

The Franciscan chronicles stand out as sources for Brazilian historiography by preserving the memory of the Order of Friars Minor in the colonial context. Their narratives show aspects of the political, social and religious life of the friars, while they also contribute to fill the gaps left by the absence of documents in the archives of the Order in Brazil. This work focuses on the descriptions made by the chroniclers about the devotional images found in the Brazilian territory between the 16th and 17th centuries, with emphasis on the news that described miracles attributed to the sculptures. The goal is to establish a relation between the local imagination and the spaces the friars occupied (as convents and cities), to understand the connection between these divine manifestations and the Franciscan spirituality, the local culture and the faithful’s devotion, as well as to reflect on the impact they create in discourses about the Franciscan legacy in these chronicles

The cult of the Infant Jesus spread from Italy to the whole of Western Europe, mostly supported by the Franciscan movement and their devotion to the Nativity scene. The height of this devotion took place in the period of the Counter-Reformation, mostly in female convents, and included the custom of dressing and adorning the images, and then displaying them on the altars of parish churches, shrines of pilgrimage, or domestic oratories. This paper collects and studies the references to this cult in the work Santuário Mariano (1707-1723) by Fr. Agostinho de Santa Maria. It highlights the most notable images of the Holy Child referenced in this text due to their supposed miraculous attributes, as well as the accounts of the devotional practices surrounding them

According to a bull of Innocent IV, present in Lyons for the Ecumenical Council of Lyons, the image of «Our Lady on this side of the Alps» was brought to Lugdunum by Saint Pothin, the first bishop of the city. What kind of image? There is still a late statue, hidden during the religious wars, then found near the crypt in the 19th century, and a keystone (during the 15thcentury) probably representing this image. Minutes of the visit of the 14th-15th century clearly describe the organisation of the space of the shrine whose archaeology has shown that it had not been modified since the High Middle Ages: crypt at the crossroads, altar on the crypt (in the Paleo-Christian way), the main altar, the tombs of the bishops of the sixth century and, at the bottom of the apse, the image of the Virgin. This image was both an object of worship and the object of a pilgrimage of healing. After the destruction of the religious wars, the statue was moved to the south arm of the transept and became the cult image of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Grace. The upheaval of the spatial organisation is heavy with meaning: loss of relationship with the history of the early Church of Lyon and refocusing on the life of the brotherhoods, but with a primacy given to the image which is not enclosed in an autonomous chapel, but remains directly related to the sanctuary space

To approach the iconography of the miracles of Saint James involves turning to textual sources, to observe the interaction between image and text. In the 12th century, the Liber Sancti Iacobi compiles, in Book II, the miracles performed by the Apostle on the roads to Santiago and in the saint’s own church in Compostela. The geography where the miracles take place is varied, and the protagonists belong to different social classes, although the privileged are the most important. This miraculous compendium was copied and inserted in various codices that have been studied from philological and cultural analyses. With regard to the History of Art, we propose to approach some of these miracles based on the images and the devotion to which they have been the object: which are the most represented, what aspects stand out and what are their main meanings according to their supports.

This paper draws an itinerary through the different medieval pieces preserved in Galicia in which the image of the crucified Christ is depicted. Given the enormous heterogeneity of the pieces, this study is devoted to making an inventory exclusively of works produced in stone and wood. It provides a typological classification of these artworks and a brief interpretation of their functions. Thus, the main purpose of this paper is to offer an approach to the Galician panorama that can serve as a resource for academic studies interested in conducting a comparative analysis in which to include the Galician reality

The Casa Arte Sacra Fânzeres, located in Fânzeres (Gondomar), is specialized in the artisanal execution of sacred sculpture and furniture. This workshop, founded over fifty years ago, brings together employees who learned this art in a workshop context, as in the past. It also preserves the «traditional know-how» of the arts of wood carving, upholstery and sacred painting, as well as the application of gold leaf and crystal eyes in the images. In addition to the quality of the technical execution, this workshop also articulates with other local «ways of doing», such as goldsmithery, sewing and handcraft embroidery. The aim of this study is to address the materiality of the sacred image before it takes on spirituality in sacred spaces, as an appeal to the senses and transmission of meanings

La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (1928), directed by C. T. Dreyer, marks a breakthrough with cinema depictions of religious subjects.Settingaside conventional narratives, closed and declamatory, and concentrating on the interaction between semi-isolated images, appealing to multiples senses, the film transfers to the observer the task of animating and conferring global meaning to them. Though, in the twilight of silent cinema, Dreyer’s film is celebrated by its formal characteristics. Through this article, we propose to explore the representation of devotional practices on cinema through an analysis of Dreyer’s film, combining visual and fil studies approaches and establishing connections between its images and other media.
