The frontiers of Portuguese America were in movement throughout the colonial period, as occurred in Minas Gerais. However, after the revolution of enslaved people in Saint-Domingue in 1791 and the consequent increase in sugar prices in international markets, there was an intense migratory flow to the colony’s unoccupied, uninhabited regions. It was in this historical framework that Campinas, countryside of São Paulo, witnessed its free population increase by more than five times in addition to the slave population being increased by ten times. Thus, this article aims to investigate the migration of sugar producers to Campinas and to understand how the origins of these individuals explain the formation of this sugar production complex. In this sense, there was a considerable migration of descendants of the colonial elite, especially those born in Itu and Minas Gerais

According to our calculations, more than two hundred ships were sunk by German submarines off the Portuguese coast during the First World War. In the last few years, historiography has produced several pages about the operability of German submarine warfare, although we still do not know its social and economic impacts. Taking into account the latest scientific advances, we propose new problematics around this subject by correlating new data, in order to ascertain the direct and indirect impacts of German submarine warfare on Portuguese society and economy during the Great War.

This paper is a reflection on a set of ten images and a Via Sacra conceived by the sculptor Altino Maia (1911-1988), between 1955 and 1957, for the new parish church of São Pedro da Afurada (Vila Nova de Gaia). The study addresses the images in several dimensions: artistic and iconographic, including ordering processes and creation; the anthropological, detailing the community’s reception and reaction to these sculptures. Nine of the images were «hidden» in cabinets for long years, removed from the eyes of the faithful, received the popular and derogatory names of «Santos Pretos» or «Santos das Rodilhas» and were even victims of aggression attempts. The sculpture of the Crucified Christ was exhibited on the apse’s back wall until 2021 and the Via Sacra continues to be displayed on the north wall of the parish church of São Pedro da Afurada.Basedon the documentary and visual sources of the time and the testimony of some inhabitants of Afurada, this paper intends to analyze the circumstances of commissioning and artistic creation, developing an iconographic study of the images, contextualizing them in their time and to understand these object-images (in line with Jérôme Baschet) from an anthropological perspective

The improvement in living conditions in recent decades, with reflections on a more diversified and accessible diet to the population, allowed to eradicate some diseases caused by malnutrition, as in the case of pellagra.A nutritional disorder caused by a deficiency of vitamin B3 (niacin), with serious complications at the dermatological, gastrointestinal and mental level, affected mainly the most disadvantaged populations, whose diet was based on the prolonged and almost exclusive consumption of maize, with an endemic character in several European countries. This article aims to provide a historical and endemiological framework for the disease of the rose, and later to evaluate the effects of knowledge about the disease in Portugal at the beginning of the 20th century.

Migrations, mass tourism, and international real estate investments are causing irreversible effects on the genuine identity evolution of Mouraria’s urban landscape heritage. This research analyses the emotional and multisensorial responses to the urban space of Mouraria’s residents using the methodology of three pedagogical-artistic laboratories. We enquire how this multicultural community is involved in the creation of an active and predicative experience of space through artistic activities. This community-based research reaffirms the understanding of the urban heritage in its intangible dimension as a social participative construct, in a constant process of identity reformulation, reinvention, and artistic creation.

The research about the dialectics of the organization of the settlements in Ribacoa’s ray, comprising the period between 1762 and 1960, arises from the systematization and interpretation of the territory’s architecture in a tensional dialogue with its border condition. The mentioned region (roughly confined to the municipalities of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Almeida and Sabugal) will thus constitute the main aspect of analysis and problematization related with contemporary landscape modeling, which is coordinated with state actions aimed according the productive and economic possibilities of the region. The discourse about the action of several agents over the centuries will recover aspects of the evolution of human occupation that constitue a methodological basis for understanding the territorial process. In a perspective of holistic understanding, it will be demonstrated that exploratory incursions including primary sources and the theoretical field must be complemented by local surveys, namely those showing the human settlements in articulation with its vital space that integrates the water structures, the constructions supporting the military actions as well as the circulation system, the industries and the farms.

It’s our main goal to bring Nova Sapho of Visconde de Vila-Moura to the surface of the Portuguese literary landscape. Situated in the twentieth century, three years before the orphic modernist movement, this novel does not integrate the Portuguese’s literary canon. In Aníbal Fernandes’ words this is «the only and main example of the decadent movement in portuguese prose» (my translation) which explores feminine sexuality as marginal to the social and cultural context. Understanding decadent features within this work is our main goal and it will provide an introductory stance to the novel, being Anna M. Klobucka’s and Óscar Lopes’ studies the only investigation found about it.

The present work explores the recognition of the past and present genius loci of three spaces of Porto city center as remaining and transformed representations of spaces with distinct, interconnected and pertinent botanical missions in the nineteenth century landscape of the city. Through the exploration of sources left by the interveners or graphic testimonies of the urban lands‑ cape from 1850 to the present day of these (ethno-)botanical spaces, we explore how the interveners and spaces of the Jardim Botânico da Academia Polythecnica do Porto, the Horto-pharmacêutico da Botica da Hospital Real de Santo António and the Horto das Virtudes mutually influenced. On the other hand, it is demonstrated how these spaces determined a time of special interest in botany that would not be repeated in the history of the city and its population.
