Purpose: This study aimed to identify latent classes of ego-resiliency trajectories in adolescents and investigate predictors of latent classes based on the ecological systems theory. Methods: This study used data from the first, second, and fourth to seventh waves of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2010. The subjects included 1,793 adolescents. The data were analyzed using latent class growth analysis in Mplus 8.3 and multinomial logistic regression in SPSS 26.0. Results: The trajectories of ego-resiliency in adolescents were classified into four groups; increasing, decreasing, persistently moderate, and persistently poor. The predictors of the ‘increasing’ group were male gender, higher self-esteem, lower depression, lower parental behavior, and higher perceived community. The predictors of the ‘decreasing’ group were higher self-esteem, higher scores for relationships with friends and teachers, and higher perceived community. The predictors of the ‘persistently poor’ group were lower self-esteem, higher depression, lower annual income, lower scores for relationships with friends, and lower perceived community. Conclusion: We identified predictors for a persistently poor ego-resiliency trajectory. We suggest providing effective interventions for latent classes of ego-resiliency in adolescents based on the ecological environments.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of older adults with unmet healthcare needs. Methods: Data from the 2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. From a pool of 7992 participants, a final sample of 153 participants was analyzed using complex descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and multiple regression analysis. Results: In general, young age, being married, employment, higher income, no hypertension, health insurance coverage as an employee, and living with someone were associated with higher the HRQoL. The following factors were significantly associated with lower HRQoL scores: activity restriction (B=-0.15, p<.001), poor perceived health status (B=-0.14, p<.001), and higher depressive symptom score (B=-0.01, p=.002). The explanatory power was approximately 58%, and the model was deemed suitable (Wald F=16.86, p<.001). Conclusion: This study provides insights into the influence of various characteristics of older adults with unmet healthcare needs on their HRQoL. Healthcare providers should develop strategies to reduce these unmet healthcare needs.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the influence of critical thinking disposition and communication ability on patient safety competence among clinical nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using a self-reported questionnaire. In total, 139 nurses were recruited from a tertiary care hospital and general hospital in Gyeonggi Province. Data were collected from March 5, 2019 to March 29, 2019 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, the Scheffé test, Pearson’ correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS version 25.0. Results: The item mean score for patient safety competence was 3.83±0.40 (range, 1~5). Clinical nurses who were female, older, had higher education, and had more clinical experiences showed higher patient safety competence. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that healthy skepticism and objectivity (as subscales of clinical thinking disposition) and communication ability explained 28% and 3% of variance in patient safety competence; the model predicted approximately 38% of the variance in patient safety competence (F=6.69, p<.001). Conclusion: Clinical nurses’ patient safety competence was associated with healthy skepticism and objectivity, among the subscales of clinical thinking disposition, and communication ability. These were also found to be the major factors that influenced patient safety competence. Thus, it is necessary to develop educational programs to improve clinical nurses’ critical thinking disposition and communication skills.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify factors affecting pressure ulcers among cognitive impairment inpatients with long term care facilities. Methods: In this secondary data analysis of the two long-term care facilities, 162 patients with mild or more cognitive impairment were analyzed. Patients with a pressure ulcer of stage 2 or higher that developed after the first day of hospitalization were defined as the pressure ulcer group, while the other patients comprised the non-pressure ulcer group. Demographic characteristics were compared between the two groups. Initially, a univariate analysis was conducted. Subsequently, risk factors were identified through logistic regression analysis using the variables that exhibited statistically significant differences in the univariate analysis. Results: Thirty-three patients had hospital-acquired pressure ulcers. Age (odds ratio [OR]=0.92, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.87~0.98), albumin levels (OR=0.25, 95% CI=0.08~0.77), Charlson comorbidity index (OR=1.57, 95% CI=1.14~2.18), and Mini-Mental State Examination for Koreans score (OR=0.90, 95% CI=0.81~0.99) were identified as risk factors for pressure ulcer occurrence. Conclusion: Our data analysis supports independent associations between certain clinical characteristics and pressure ulcer occurrence in long-term care facility patients with cognitive impairment. To reduce the risk of pressure ulcers in long-term care facilities, health professionals should implement appropriate prevention measures.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parenting stress, sleep quality, self-compassion, and family relationship on mothers’ postpartum depression. Methods: The participants were 141 postpartum mothers within 6 months of childbirth who completed self-report questionnaires consisting of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Self-Compassion Scale, and Family Relationship Assessment Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression using IBM SPSS/WIN 27.0. Results: Postpartum depression was positively associated with parenting stress and sleep quality, but negatively related to self-compassion and family relationship. Multiple regression analysis showed that parenting stress, sleep quality, self-compassion and family relationship were significant factors with an explanation power of approximately 59% of the variance in postpartum depression. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it is necessary to develop nursing interventions to enhance family relationships and reduce parenting stress to prevent postpartum depression.
