Relationships and a relational understanding in mental health research

In engaging in this article with the far-reaching scholarly work of Peter Huxley, I focus on the foundations he has laid in developing a stronger social basis to understanding mental health and the forms of support that those experiencing mental health problems want and need. I will argue that mental health research and policy have barely embraced nor developed this foundation, let alone taken it to the core of knowledge in the way needed. To do this we need to follow the relational turn in scholarly work, a theoretical perspective I expand on in the article. Through these discussions I seek to lay directions for the development of mental health knowledge and policy to better understand the full social context of people’s experiences and of practice to support them.

Informal fostering is an important tradition for many communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the intersections of poverty and social circumstances may increase the risk of exploitation for informally fostered children. We used mixed methods to estimate the prevalence of child trafficking within informal child fostering placements in Sierra Leone, to document vulnerability factors and explore perceptions of key stakeholders. Data were collected through 1) a household survey (N= 3,070), 2) interviews (N= 41) with young adults who experienced child trafficking in informal fostering, parents of children who experienced trafficking in foster placements, and key informants, and 3) focus groups with community members (N= 23). We found that informal fostering increases the likelihood for children to experience trafficking. Although there are significant associations between child trafficking and informal fostering, social (gender and cultural traditions) and economic factors (poverty and school access) appear to be drivers for both. Our results suggest that strengthening poverty reduction measures, expanding opportunities for schooling and vocational training for children and young adults, and improving safety for children in informal fostering arrangements through reporting and monitoring are essential to mitigate the high rates of child trafficking in Sierra Leone, and to ensure children’s well-being in informal fostering placements.

The roles of social workers and community volunteers in providing services to foster care children living with HIV in South Africa

This paper discusses the role of social workers and community volunteers in providing services to foster care children living with HIV in South Africa. A literature review was undertaken of 14 qualitative studies conducted in South Africa from 2012-2022. The review showed the prominent role played by social workers in foster care, despite factors which hindered service such as high caseloads, lack of knowledge on HIV and prioritisation of quantity over quality. Hence, several challenges were faced by foster carers. The studies also revealed that community volunteers were providing services to children living with HIV through linking them to care and providing educational support. The literature shows that the challenges faced by foster care parents and their children mostly resulted of social workers’ inability to provide comprehensive services. Community volunteers offered services where social workers were constrained. This paper concludes that social workers should work in collaboration with community volunteers to cater to the limitations facing the social work workforce in providing services to foster care parents and children living with HIV.

Lizane Wilson, Lydia Mokgoko
This study explored the social support of the residential care facility to care leavers during the transition phase to independent living as perceived by the social workers as well as the care leavers. Purposive sampling and semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted with 12 care leavers as well as 12 social workers to gain a detailed picture of the participants’ views on the social support provided in preparation for independent living. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. Finding highlights were that ongoing residential social support and motivation are of paramount importance to shape the transitioning of the care leavers toward independent living. Strong ties with other people and networks assist them with access to the resources they need for goal attainment. Care leavers apply both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to their advantage. They appeared to appreciate the significant part played by the group networks. Care leavers mostly preferred to stick with their existing relationships as it provided them with a sense of belonging and strengthened their self-esteem, reiterating the central importance of ongoing residential support. care facility during the transition phase.

The United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development declared environmental problems as social problems. Over the years, the social work profession, although governed by the ‘person-in-environment’ principle, has long neglected the natural environment and progressively assumed the significance of environmental issues in the social intervention context. In this article, we first describe the environmental context for human life, followed by a narrative review of existing research on understanding environmental sustainability and its relationship with social work. This is supported by an explanation of the current global climate change situation and the utilization of sustainable development goals which are directly associated with environmental sustainability. In order to arrive at the conclusion, social work before environmental sustainability in the UK context and Hamilton’s psychosocial casework are also discussed. It can help social workers broaden and strengthen practices by incorporating the realm of ecology and the environment in the social work field.

Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused poor mental health, parental loss and food insecurity in children. At the peak of the pandemic, context-relevant and child-friendly COVID-19 tools for child counselling and education were limited in low-income communities. Researchers and social work practitioners created Uhambo Lwami storybook in IsiZulu language to initiate conversations with children about COVID-19. The findings reported are drawn from in-depth interviews with 13 purposively selected community-based social workers and child and youth workers who integrated the storybook into child counselling during the pandemic. The central premise of the paper is their experiences about the use and value of the storybook to support children’s psychological well-being during the pandemic. Two themes are discussed:  The use of the storybook with children and its value to support children during the pandemic. The results indicated that the storybook created a child-friendly environment for children to share their psychosocial experiences of living during the pandemic. Furthermore, it facilitated sharing of experiences about death and illness in a caring and responsive manner. Well-designed storybooks are a cost-effective tool useful to initiate sensitive discussions with children. Context-relevant storybooks can be used to educate and alleviate distress in children during pandemics.

This article stages a discussion on the role of social psychiatry in present-day child and adolescent mental health care. Taking a broad perspective, it considers the growing demand for mental health services for children and young people and how social psychiatry can be situated in the current framework of psychiatry as a medical specialty as well as within child and adolescent mental health care provision more widely. Avenues available to expand social psychiatry’s reach and impact in the field of child and adolescent mental health are also addressed.

Freedom of information (FoI) legislation has been represented as a valuable but underused means of generating otherwise unavailable data from public authorities in health and social care research. This article complements extant literature on the use of FoI requests for research intended to inform health and social care policy and improve the quality of practice. Reflections are provided on challenges and ethical considerations, drawing on relevant literature and the authors’ experience undertaking studies addressing different topics in mental health and child welfare using FoI requests as the primary source of data collection. The recommendations are practically orientated and aimed primarily at social work and health and social care researchers who may have limited knowledge of how FoI requests might be utilised in their work but be curious about this method’s application.

Alistair Grant
This article is adapted and developed from the author’s inaugural professorial lecture University of Bolton, delivered twice – in November 2022 and March 2023. With the intention to speak directly to readers, Grant begins by defining and unpacking autoethnography, before turning to its component parts, and its historical emergence and philosophical underpinning. He then provides an answer to the question: ‘Why do autoethnography?’ This enables him to overview his single- and joint-authored autoethnographic work from recent years, and his current work, which links to collegiate relationships at the University of Bolton and beyond. After rebutting the main criticisms levelled against autoethnography, the author ends the article by briefly mentioning its international status in 2023.
