Through a phenomenological reading of Henri Matisse’s Ecrits et propos sur l ’ art the paper analyzes in their mutual connection the themes of nature, feeling and origin in relation to the Artist’s works (in particular the ones of the Fauvist period) and to his own reflection on art. Interpreting nature through feeling is something more than a solipsistic glance on reality linked to private emotions, it is, according to M. Merleau-Ponty’s theory of perception and expression, a way to create symbols of the living unity of consciousness and the external world. In conclusion, the paper shows the theme of the origin as Matisse’s pictorial way to meditate on the possibility of artistic creation in its necessary connection with the experience of the lifeworld. The constitutive ground of the lifeworld can only be represented into the effort of pure colors and arabesque to show a meditation on the temporal dimension of the origin in which a new disclosing sense can be expressed.

This paper aims to examine the relationships between the research of young Viktor von Weizsacker and Kant’s critical thinking. Starting from the criticism of Driesch’s Neovitalism, here are considered some of the major contributions of Weizsacker in the years 1911-1926, in order to show its path between criticism of knowledge, metaphysics, construction of a biology and a medical anthropology.

The paper focuses on the reception of Kant’s philosophy of biology in the context of the so-called ‘Gottingen School’. Timothy Lenoir has tried to rehabilitate the framework elaborated at Gottingen by stressing its difference from Naturphilosophie . Focusing on the work of Karl Friedrich Kielmeyer this paper argues that Lenoir’s position is based on a historiographical bias. I take into account Kielmeyer’s stance on physiology, embryology and natural history. This analysis reveals the existence of a clear shift from a regulative to a constitutive understanding of teleology. I agree with Zammito that the ‘Lenoir thesis’ should be overcome in favor of a more accurate narrative of the emergence of biology in Germany at the turn of the nineteenth century.

In recent years the number of scholarly publications devoted to Kant's theory of biology has rapidly growing, with particular attention being given to Kant's thoughts about the concepts of teleology, function, organism, and their respective roles in scientific practice. Moving from these recent studies, and distancing itself from their mostly evolutionary background, the main aim of the present paper is to suggest an original "cognitive turn" in the interpretation of Kant's theory of biology. More specifically, the Authors will trace a connection between some Kantian theses about the “peculiar” or special nature of the human mind ( intellectus ectypus ), advanced in the Critique of the Power of Judgement (§ 76, 77), and some specific epistemological issues pertaini ng to the research practice of contemporary molecular biology.

The focus of this article is on the concept of “situation”, which lies at the very origin of the Situationist International , as it has been theorized in particular by Guy Debord. The aim of this paper will be to show the relationship between Debord’s concept of situation and the concept of repetition as theorized by Deleuze in Difference and repetition (1968). Such a conceptual proximity allows us to grasp some less known aspects of Debord’s thought, in respect to the critical part of his own reflection, which is much more known. Both authors share a similar conception about the peculiar structure of repetition like its own specific temporality. Such a commonality is manifest in various typical situationist proceedings; in particular: derive , detournement and cinema (considered as way to overcome the alienation of art).

In this paper I offer critical attention to the notion of atmosphere in relation to music. By exploring the concept through the case study of the Closed Brethren worship services, I argue that atmosphere may provide analytical tools to explore the ineffable in ecclesial practices. Music, just as atmosphere, commonly occupies a realm of ineffability and undermines notions such as inside and outside, subject and object. For this reason I present music as a means of knowing the atmosphere. The first part of this paper points to the limits of an understanding of atmosphere as a constellation of things, as proposed by Gernot Bohme. In contrast to this, Hermann Schmitz conceptualises atmosphere as half-thing which suggests movement. Drawing on this, I propose to methodologically approach atmospheres as movements. Consequently, in the second part of this paper I closely analyse two motions as they cohere in Closed Brethren worship services: first, becoming (Deleuze and Guattari), a movement on the level of the individual worshiper; secondly, territorialisation (Deleuze and Guattari), a movement of the atmosphere towards its solidification. Here music as atmosphere is not a system of moral signification but a generative power affording intimate processes of divine encounter, whilst producing affective denominational difference.
