This study considered the problem of understanding and use of risk management methods in construction projects and their representation in the literature and their practical application. Research of trends in risk management was conducted using studies from the EBSCO database that were published in the period from 1999 to 2015. The focus included the development of two terms, namely traditional and holistic approach to risk management as well as to uncertainty and opportunity management. The trend of leading standards in the field of project management, PMBoK and ISO 31000 indicated full support for the modernization of risk management that focused on the risks as well as potential opportunities in the project. The findings also revealed that the global practices continued to lack awareness of risk management and its benefits for project goals. A similar situation was found in Croatia by observing project management practices in two case studies, namely Project Zagrebačka obala in Rijeka and a Project of SEECEL Zagreb. Primarily, the lack of education and communication between experts are important issues requiring attention in practice and academics. It is necessary to gradually introduce standards over time to prepare for progress in managing uncertainties and adopting more holistic approaches.

“Einstein’s riddle” is a popular example of constraints satisfaction problem. Since its introduction, different forms and variations of the riddle have been presented. Regardless of the variant of the riddle, its solution is considered a tough challenge for humans. Researchers have developed and are still developing mathematical models, as well as computational simulation models for solving it. In this article, the authors have modified a previously published mathematical model and developed a computational spreadsheet model for solving the riddle, which provides a unique solution for the riddle. The model was also tested in a small and medium-scaled form for solving constraint satisfaction problems regarding the allocation of construction machines. The authors have also highlighted the model’s limitations for solving such problems and made suggestions regarding necessary modifications in the model to solve more complex problems in the same domain.

A lattice girder frame was compared with a combined lattice and Vierendeel girder frame on a singlestory building with a frame span of 62.0 m, column height of 15.0 m, and ridge height of 17.3 m. The lattice girder frame has the advantage of being a cheaper solution when considering steel usage. In contrast, the combined girder frame is a less complex production that has the advantage of cheaper labor costs in relation to the higher material consumption costs. The T-joint in Vierendeel girders, designed in accordance with EN 1993-1-8, was analyzed because of its key importance when designing the overall frame. Guidelines for the preliminary selection of the chord and post member cross sections in the Vierendeel girders based on their geometrical compatibility are given in this paper. This paper also describes a method for selecting the optimal static system for combined girder frames to achieve a more uniform bending moment distribution along the frame girder by adding additional posts.

The paper presents recently developed methods along with a toolset for monitoring the environmental impact of mining operations, and in particular, for analyzing water quality, by using earth observations. Cuttingedge technology is proposed for the combined use of aerial lightweight measurements, including hyperspectral imaging spectroscopy and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Water quality was analyzed using airborne and in situ measured water data. Measurements of the water-leaving radiance (Rw) spectra provide sufficient information to estimate water quality because of the combination of parameters derived from the measurements: total suspended matter (TSM), phytoplankton (with the most active component Chlorophyll a, CHL-a) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). The in situ Rw spectra were used along with the in situ concentrations measurements to find the most optimal band ratio algorithm for each water quality parameter. Analysis of the linear regression between the band ratios and the concentration measurements showed very strong correlation. The small root mean square errors (RMSE) for the most of the parameters lead to conclusion that there is no significant change in water quality resulting from a latent effect of the old mining industry or waste dumping within the region of Mostar.

Studenčica bridge is located at Donji Studenci, to the southwest of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The bridge is a great feat of engineering. It is built at a height of 88 m above the valley and is 555 m long, with main spans of 120 m. Before the bridge was opened for traffic, it was subjected to a series of tests to verify whether the construction satisfied the criteria regulated by law. Static and dynamic tests were conducted to confirm the safety of the bridge. Before the tests commenced, a numerical model of the bridge was developed and calculated by using a computer program (TOWER), and the calculation results were later compared with the measured values. The static tests comprised measurement of vertical deformation and stress in the construction, and the dynamic test involved measurement of the oscillation frequencies of the bridge. The results were analyzed to check whether the bridge performs as expected and whether it can be opened for traffic.

This paper presents an analysis of the deformations in hollow cross-sectional beams made of multilayer glass fiber-reinforced polymer at force application positions. A non-linear numerical a nalysis is conducted on a beam with a rectangular cross-section and familiar dimensions and material characteristics. Three beams with different spans that are all loaded with two concentrated forces are analyzed, where the distance of the forces from the supports is varied. The kneading deformations at the vicinity, where the two concentrated forces are applied, are monitored with regard to force increase. The results are shown in dimensionless diagrams, wherein the ratio of the actual and initial forces is related to the ratio of deformations at the force application points and mid-span.
