Jay Hambidge and his theory of dynamic symmetry drew support from a wide variety of individuals connected with the visual arts in the first half of the twentieth century. Hambidge presented the theory as a practical tool for analyzing and appreciating artworks of the past as well as an aid to the contemporary designer. This article sets out the mathematical basis of dynamic symmetry and examines the range of mediums and disciplines that artists and designers found for it. This range makes dynamic symmetry worth reconsider-ing as we move to more global and inclusive studies of art.

In this short think piece, we highlight four objects that stand in for a larger group of medieval containers made of silver and niello. Decorations and Arabic inscriptions make it likely that these metalworks were made in al-Andalus between the mid-tenth and early twelfth centuries, yet all but one have come down to us through preservation in church treasuries. Here we lay out the issues at play in our ongoing study of the full group of silver containers.
