Abstract In library user experience (UX) literature, physical and digital spaces are often studied separately. In academic libraries, different stakeholders often control and operate the logistics of each set of spaces. Additionally, library UX studies seldom consider the physical experiences of users beyond the borders of library websites or buildings. Our survey of 37 U.S. academic library websites found that 97% had some kind of digital representations of physical spaces – predominantly floor plans. A content analysis of those floor plans found that many were poorly designed, and identified two specific themes: non-accessible content and a lack of comprehensive information to facilitate the user journey. This paper offers several recommendations for building more accessible digital representations of physical spaces for the library website. These trends and recommendations are intended to be instructive for managers of library websites and elucidate larger themes about academic libraries.

Abstract Primo Analytics from two campuses of the California State University system has revealed that a dramatically low proportion of Primo searches originate from mobile devices. The current study focuses on usability concerns as one area that may be preventing students from searching the Primo mobile interface. The sample for this study includes students from two campuses with a variety of experience with library instruction and searching the library’s discovery system. Participants were given the same set of six common academic tasks to complete. Both mobile and desktop participants found three tasks relatively easy to complete. When there were differences in completion rates between the mobile and desktop users, the desktop users were overall more successful. No task was consistently difficult for desktop users to complete, while mobile users found two of the tasks very challenging to complete. Based on the findings, the authors make recommendations for improving the experience of mobile users.

Number 33 of the 60þ title series “Practical guides for librarians,” Video marketing for libraries focuses on the creation of videos to market library services and resources. Libraries often have to promote themselves in order to increase awareness among users and funding sources. Over the course of ten chapters, the authors of this work share their personal experience with video marketing in academic institutions. The first chapter defines the differences between marketing and branding, as well as how to define the library’s audience and its mission, goals, and objectives. The authors remind the reader that misconceptions abound regarding what a library does, so effective marketing is essential. Chapters two through four address the importance of developing an effective strategy for video creation; for translating the library’s message into a marketable video concept; and for budget, script, and storyboard development. Real examples are included, along with tables showing times and figures from actual scenarios. The next chapters provide a detailed discussion of video production and filmmaking basics such as roles on film sets, camera shots, angles, and movement. Figures are included throughout the chapter to give further explanation of these items. The authors then look at post-production video editing and the difference between animated versus live-action video. Chapter eight addresses how to create video while keeping in mind the needs of individuals with disabilities. There is an overview of disability legislation as well as guidelines and tips on accommodating hearing and visual impairments. The final two chapters review the importance of marketing the library, particularly through increasing awareness via social media, and then measuring the impact of the library’s marketing measures. At the end of each chapter in Video marketing for libraries, the reader will find key points, references, and suggested readings. Also included in this work are an index, a list of figures and tables, and information about the three authors. As with all titles in this practical guide series, Video marketing for libraries is a useful edition to any librarian’s shelf and is recommended for those responsible for video marketing in libraries.

Dealing consistently and practically with data of all kinds is a required skill set now for every librarian. This book is written for all librarians and requires no specific technical skills or programing knowledge for understandability or usage. It tackles the technical challenges encountered when migrating specific records, services, and types of data with existing staff, as well as commonly available technical resources. Although migrating data is emphasized in the title, the book also deals with understanding the relationships between the system itself, the configuration, and the data as a whole. The book also addresses issues such as extraction, analyzation, and modification of data in a new system. Containing 13 chapters incorporating a number of detailed sub-chapters, along with numerous figures, tables, and examples, this manual is a gem for every library contemplating an integrated library system migration or dealing with movement of data from one platform to another. Chapter one describes the planning and migration process in general, from preparing staff, system, and data to knowledge regarding skill sets and vendors. Chapter two examines formats used in migration, their technical challenges, and the processes for correcting, cleaning, and modifying exported data in a new system. Chapter three provides information on tools which staff without programing skills can use for migrating data along with practical examples. Chapter four discusses the MARC format, specifically in relation to the MarcEdit tool which many libraries use to clean, restructure, and reclaim data in a new system. Chapter five details issues relating to migrating bibliographic and item data, and chapter six describes the challenges of migrating acquisitions data. Chapter seven deals with authentication and patron data migration, and chapter eight focuses on the challenges of serials data. Chapter nine examines electronic resources management migration topics, and Chapter 10 looks at digital collections and institutional repositories migrations. One topic with which many libraries often deal is migrating from an individual to a shared system and vice versa, which is detailed in chapter 11. Chapter 12 describes the many issues around dealing with vendors, from what work should be delegated to whom, to what vendors can realistically accomplish. Finally, chapter 13 focuses on testing and putting the final system into full production. Moving data from one system to another is one of the scariest and most misunderstood functions which happens in today’s libraries, yet it is also one of the most essential due to constant technological and organizational realities. This book is highly recommended as a “... for dummies” type of volume on the topic.

This helpful introduction to design fundamentals is arranged as a course but can also be used as a reference book. Colston supplies useful examples of effective designs, suggested activities for practice, beneficial resources, and references. It will be useful for the novice designer or to improve upon the graphic design skills of the experienced librarian. Though concise, the book provides a broad range of information.
