Abstract Non-serviceable systems are often constrained by three requirements that address the need to reliably fulfill its mission: A lifetime requirement, a reliability at end-of-life requirement, and a requirement to avoid single point failures, generally through redundancy. From a requirements engineering perspective, a significant question is whether the requirements to use redundant solutions are necessary for space system design when a reliability target has been specified. Does a requirement to use redundancy impose a specific solution with no other effect on need satisfaction? If so, can it be deleted with no adverse effect on mission success? To answer these questions, the impact of different redundancy configurations on mission success are studied, using a space system as a test case. Mission success is modeled as a function that accrues value over the satellite’s operational life. The different redundancy configurations are then compared for different rates of value accumulation over the space system’s operational life, which encompass reasonable value accumulation rates observed in most real-life space missions. The numerical results reveal that when all design alternatives provide the same reliability at end of life at the same cost, systems that employ redundancy have a higher expected value than a system without redundancy.

Abstract There is a lack of research on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the construction sector in the UK. Therefore, this research seeks to explore AI uses and its benefits on the UK construction industry. Given the new and unexplored nature of the research problem, a qualitative case study research methodology was adopted. Construction projects, which have adopted some of the AI forms all around the UK, are investigated extracting the use of the technology and how processes within the construction industry can benefit from the adoption of AI. Developing an AI system can benefit the construction industry in terms of the planning process, organizations have implemented AI systems to accomplish tasks such as tunnel inspections, safety hazard identifying, and risk management. These implementations have proved to be successful and efficient in improving production within the organizations. This paper highlights the key uses and benefits of AI-based systems within the construction industry. The business model was developed based on current work practices with AI and without AI. It is concluded that the industry as a whole should enhance coordination and cooperation across the value chain and agree on common goals and standards for the adoption of AI.

Abstract Sociotechnical systems like railways are becoming increasingly complex as numerous changes are constantly being integrated to improve or maintain desired performances. A crucial aspect enabling this integration is to define the scope of the changes, referred to as the system of interest. This can be challenging for engineering managers due to mounting system complexity caused by: an inter-organizational environment, a multitude of diverse stakeholders, the multidomain environment, and an increasing number of interdependencies. By employing Design Science Research, this study proposes an analysis that supports engineering managers in managing sociotechnical and inter-organizational change integration (MOSAIC) by facilitating a structured, multidisciplinary assessment of system impacts and interdependencies. The design was evaluated by applying it to an inter-organizational project in the Dutch railway system. The findings show that with MOSAIC, a system of interest can be collectively defined using the proposed process and a multidisciplinary and inter-organizational group of experts, creating mutual understanding. MOSAIC can further aid engineering managers in front-end project planning.

Abstract This paper aims to review the state-of-the-art in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) as a key element to Industry 4.0 and to provide engineering managers with adequate and sufficient knowledge about CPS, highlighting their characteristics, technologies, capabilities, and applications. A three-stage research method was applied to provide an extensive search and systematic literature review (SLR). We identified, selected, and reviewed 218 publications. The convergences in specific areas in which studies are still needed were detailed. We identified 5 characteristics, 7 capabilities, 17 related technologies, and 11 areas of application. Four application areas remain as an opportunity to be explored in future research, such as environmental sustainability; smart and precision agriculture; smart construction, and social sciences. This article is the first to present a wide-ranging review of CPS and bringing together a significant number of publications. Its originality is focused on detailing and analyzing CPS characteristics, technologies, and multidisciplinary applications allowing engineering professionals and managers to identify which technologies a manufacturing equipment should integrate, as well as the level of development of each of them to achieve its full operation in Industry 4.0 environment. The main limitation of this work is the fact that new features, applications, and technologies will certainly appear soon.

Abstract This study aims at investigating the public and private perspectives on both the critical success factors (CSFs) and risk factors (RFs) in large Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects. It aims at analyzing how risk allocation occurs and its implications. A case-based research approach was applied, combining qualitative and quantitative analysis strategies. This research in-depth examines four large PPP projects in the Brazilian metro-rail sector. Dyadic archival and interview data were collected from public-private parties, including 34 interviews, and archival sources, such as contracts and reports. The results identify the critical success factors and risk factors in PPP projects in the transport sector. The analysis shows that public and private sectors pursue different critical success factors but converge on the risk factors. The most stressed risk factor is “corruption and bribery,” which reveal the corrupted context spanning in the studied projects. Finally, the conflict in perceptions shows an explanation of context-dependent aspects explored in the qualitative analysis.

Transcranial ultrasound holds much potential as a safe, non-invasive modality for navigated neuromodulation, with low-intensity focused ultrasound (FUS) and transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS) representing the two main modalities. While neuroscientific and preclinical applications have received much interest, clinical applications are still relatively scarce. For safety considerations, the current literature is largely based on guidelines for ultrasound imaging that uses various physical parameters to describe the ultrasound pulse form and expected bioeffects. However, the safety situation for neuromodulation is inherently different. This article provides an overview of relevant ultrasound parameters with a focus on bioeffects relevant for safe clinical applications. Further, a retrospective analysis of safety data for clinical TPS applications in patients is presented.

Abstract The increasing number of destructive events, such as natural disasters and social public events, may result in project delays and impair project performance. Accordingly, building and enhancing the organizational resilience of construction projects is a priority for construction organizations. This study seeks to advance this literature by exploring the combination of conditions to enhance resilience from resource and institutional perspectives. Specifically, resource-based theory and institutional theory are used to identify factors that affect the organizational resilience of construction projects, and fifteen representative Chinese projects are selected. A conditional combination is explored to build organizational resilience from pre-crisis and post-crisis perspectives and make a comparative analysis. Results show that institutional factors dominate the construction of proactive organizational resilience, whereas resource factors play a major role in enhancing reactive organizational resilience. Organizational norms are the main guarantee for the crisis response of construction projects whether before or after a disaster. This study contributes to understanding the dynamic changes of organizational resilience in construction projects. The findings provide a basis for enhancing organizational resilience, focusing on crisis preparedness and recovery efforts to respond to frequent and unexpected challenges.

Background: Despite the frequent co-occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder, screening for trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms is not a routine practice in substance use disorder clinics. The aims of this study were to examine the prevalence of exposure to traumatic events, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and subjective sleep quality in substance use disorder inpatients after detoxification. In addition, we analyzed associations of sociodemographics, direct and indirect exposure to traumatic events, and sleep quality with posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity.

Methods: Adults diagnosed with substance use disorder (n = 188; 25% women, mean age 46.6 ± 12.3 years) from 2 inpatient addiction clinics were assessed at approximately 4 days post-admission for age, gender, educational level, self-reported substance use, trauma exposure, general and posttraumatic stress disorder-specific subjective sleep quality, and posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity. Correlates of posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity were identified with linear regression analyses.

Results: The prevalence of direct trauma exposure was high (89%), 51% of participants screened positive for posttraumatic stress disorder and 87% reported clinically significant poor sleep quality. Younger age, female gender, direct and indirect exposure to more traumatic events, and poor subjective sleep quality were associated with more severe posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms.

Conclusion: Nearly all substance use disorder patients admitted for detoxification in our study had been directly or indirectly exposed to 1 or more traumatic events, and many reported posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and poor sleep quality. Younger and female substance use disorder patients were at higher risk of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Our results emphasize the need for systematic screening for direct and indirect trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, and poor sleep quality in patients admitted for clinical substance use disorder treatment.

Abstract In modern business, Industry 4.0 has brought in a technological transformation in which digital technologies provide improving quality in many aspects. Therefore, this research aims to explore the influence of leadership on quality achievements within Industry 4.0, connoting Quality 4.0. Accordingly, this research observes the mutual relations among all QMS elements encompassed in ISO 9004:2018 in the context of Quality 4.0. The developed research model consists of one independent variable: Leadership; and five dependent variables: Context and Identity; Resource Management; Process Management; Performance Management; Improvement, Learning, and Innovation. The survey is carried out through a questionnaire distributed among 345 companies of different types, ages, sizes, and industries. Gathered data are analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) to perceive relationships between the variables. Findings indicate a direct positive influence among all observed variables, except the influence of Process Management on Improvement, Learning, and Innovation as Quality 4.0 achievements. The findings could have significant implications on leaders’ knowledge on investigating a roadmap to implement the well-based QMS to achieve sustainable results in Quality 4.0 improvement, learning, and innovation.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has caused extensive influence on the world’s economy and society. Many industries suffer from enormous losses in China, while the construction industry achieves a “V’ shape revival in performance. Based on an online survey of 283 Chinese civil engineers, this study reveals that the construction industry encountered difficulties of lack of workers, blocked transportation, shortage of materials, and inadequate funds, which led to common problems of schedule delay and cost overrun during the pandemic. Key measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic and help the construction industry transit from survival to revival include efficient epidemic control, various government support, usage of digital technologies, and flexible management and communication schemes. These responding strategies imply that the government, the construction industry, and construction enterprises should improve information technology intelligence to meet the challenges of a global pandemic.
