Dicksonia sellowiana Hook, tree fern, is a tree-sized fern that occurs in the Upper Montana Araucaria Forest, a subdivision of the Atlantic Forest biome. It is a species of high ecological importance, since in addition to favouring nutrient cycling, it serves as a substrate for several epiphytes. It also has medicinal potential and, having gone through an intense period of exploration, with the cutting of its caudex for the production of decorative vases, it is currently listed as an endangered species, in addition to having been studied in an

Different planting spacings of forest species can act differently in increasing or decreasing the levels of chemical elements in the soil, which affects its composition and quality. Defining adequate planting spacing for a given forest species is important, not only to optimize productivity, but also for decision-making in the recovery of degraded soils. This work aimed to evaluate the changes occurring in the chemical properties of a soil planted with Tachigali vulgaris at different spacings, approximately seven and a half years old. The work was carried out at Fazenda Gênesis, in the municipality of Dom Eliseu (PA). Soil samples were collected at four depths in 30 m x 50 m plots with four replications for each spacing. Sixteen soil collection points were randomly selected for each plot. The soil samples were sent to the Embrapa Amazônia Oriental laboratory where chemical analyzes were carried out. The PCA results showed that Al was negatively correlated with other soil attributes at all depths. The two-way ANOVA graphs (p < 0.05) demonstrated that the 4 m x 3 m spacing had the highest values in the chemical attributes beneficial to the soil at most depths in relation to at least one of the other two spacings studied, and lower values for Al, making this spacing the most suitable for recovering degraded areas/soils.

Eucalypts are a long-cycle crop that have been introduced in Brazil during several decades. The germplasm banks of the country make available several populations whose botanical classifications are somewhat outdated since these classifications have been subject to several modifications over the years. This study outlines a review of species with outdated classifications in the Anhembi Experimental Station of Forest Sciences (ESALQ/USP), one of Brazil’s main eucalypt germplasm banks and discusses the possible implications for the breeding programs that use said germplasm. In this survey, we found records that indicate introductions were made of populations of 20 eucalypts species. However, this number has increased according to the most recent update of botanical classifications, and the Anhembi Germplasm Bank has currently 22 species after a few species were reclassified. Furthermore, a major change has been the reclassification of some species from the genus Eucalyptus to the genus Corymbia. One original introduction, Eucalyptus maculata, is now considered to be (according to original provenances), Corymbia maculata and C. variegata . One species originally introduced as E. pellita has been renamed E. scias ; E. pellita still exists in north Queensland, Australia and Papua New Guinea, while E. scias has a much smaller southerly distribution in New South Wales, Australia. Similarly, an introduction of E. phaeotricha is now generally considered to be E. tindaliae, and an introduction of E. resinifera is now considered to be E. macta (according to the provenance area of the introduction). The confusing classification of the species is aggravated, in some cases, by the lack of detailed studies that allow comparing the species introduced with the same name, regarding wood productivity, tolerance and/or traits that are fundamental for defining the species to be introduced or worked on by the breeding programs.

Sumauma ( Ceiba pentandra ) is a fast-growing and light-demanding species that occurs across a wide rainfall range in tropical regions, but it is still unclear how it performs under shading. This work aimed to evaluate leaf traits and biomass allocation of sumauma seedlings in response to different levels of artificial shadings. After a strengthening period of 14 months (at moderate light), the seedlings were submitted to three shading levels for 580 days: moderate shading (T 1 : irradiance of 5.59 mol m ‒ 2 day ‒ 1 ), strong shading (T 2 : 1.29 mol m ‒ 2 day ‒ 1 ), and deep shading (T 3 : 0.14 mol m ‒ 2 day ‒ 1 ). The control (T 0 ) was seedlings under direct sunlight (15.65 mol m –2 day –1 ). Parameters evaluated were plant growth, biomass allocation to plant organs and leaf traits. Growth and biomass accumulation enhanced with a rise in irradiance, being maximum under direct sunlight and null under deep shading. Sumauma did not succumb under deep shading, as it was able to endure deep shading for 19 months. Under deep shading, the seedlings allocated just a little amount of biomass to leaves and greatly reduced leaf thickness. The whole-plant compensation point was estimated to be 1.0 mol m ‒ 2 day ‒ 1 . We concluded that pre-strengthened sumauma seedlings may endure deep shading. These traits combined with the high growth rates of this tree under full sunlight make of sumauma a promising candidate to be tested in reforestation projects.
