Large carnivores are keystone species but represent economic costs to hunters. In Sweden, carnivore territories generally overlap with hunting areas, and as a result, conflicts occur because of the competition for prey. The wolf, lynx, and brown bear are protected species by law but are hunted when authorities allocate license hunting quotas. The aim of these quotas is to limit carnivore numbers. We estimate a hedonic model using ordinary least squares to address the effect of large carnivore occurrence on hunting lease prices by accounting for the presence of license hunting quotas for predators. This result is compared with the least absolute deviation estimations, which reduce the influence of outliers in the survey data. To isolate the effect of carnivores on hunting lease prices, we use snow depth and forest productivity as proxy variables for game harvest in the absence of carnivores. Our results show that lynx and wolf presence reduce hunting lease prices, but lynx presence shows higher significance and robustness. Based on median regressions, the marginal implicit price of an additional wolf territory is about 15% larger than that of an additional lynx territory. In contrast, we found no conclusive evidence that bear abundance directly affects hunting lease prices, but regulated bear hunting is found to have a positive and significant impact on hunting leases, suggesting indirect positive net benefits of increased brown bear abundance.

Under the heterogeneity of forestry production technology for different provinces and regions of China, this paper calculates the technical efficiencies and technological gap ratios of four major forest regions in China during 2005–2015, considering time and space dimensions. The study adopts a meta-frontier theoretical framework to research on the total factor productivity of forestry, its components, and growth sources. Finally, regional convergence is also tested. The results show low forestry technical efficiency in general, with diverse regional disparities. As expected, the levels of forestry technical efficiency and the technological gap ratios in the four major forest regions change under the different technology frontiers. The total factor productivity of forestry has improved slightly, driven mainly by the change in technical efficiency, although its growth sources differ across the four forest regions. The national total factor productivity shows no trend of convergence, while absolute convergence appears in all four forest regions and nationally, implying that improving technical efficiency is the key driving force for growing forestry TFP in China.

This study employs a panel dataset on forest area of 22 countries and for the time period 1995–2016 in order to provide an up-todate assessment on determinants of forest area change. Our set of explanatory variables is drawn from the Environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis and well-established factors affecting forest area change. In this respect, macroeconomic stability, socioeconomic development, institutional efficiency and quality of governance are taken into account to assess the cumulative nature of changes in forest cover. Using static and dynamic specifications our analysis produce different results with an inverted U-shape curve only in the static case and an inverted N-shape relationship in the dynamic specifications. Specifically, using an appropriate fixed effects model validates the EKC hypothesis finding an inverted U-shaped curve with high within-the-sample turning points. The random coefficients method applied does not support the EKC hypothesis in all possible specifications while the orthogonal deviations GMM estimates indicate the presence of an inverted U-shape relationship in all cases with lower cases within-the-sample turning points. A slow adjustment rate is found in all dynamic specifications indicating the need of around four time periods for a country to adjust to the LR equilibrium level of forest recovery.

This study investigates farmer preferences for banana diversity in Sri Lanka. First, it investigate farmers' attitudes towards banana cultivation in the country. Secondly, it also estimate diversity selection models to identify the important factors that contribute to the conservation of banana diversity. The analysis uses survey data covering 450 banana growers in three different districts representing different climatic zones in the country.

How Sensitive are Spatial Estimatesof Wilderness Recreation Values toInformation about HikingDestinations?

This study uses individual survey data to investigate the impact of information about hiking destinations on estimated wilderness values in a spatial context. The data is derived from a revealed preference survey of backcountry visitors who responded to questions about their recreation behavior in the San Jacinto Wilderness of southern California. Two GIS data layers are developed showing spatial representations of non-market values derived from a Kuhn- Tucker demand model, with and without destination information. Each pixel in each data layer contains an estimate of the recreation value at that location. The destination data provides more detailed information on recreation behavior that can be used to more accurately allocate the landscape values. Results show that including destination information produces significantly greater heterogeneity in parcel value estimates for large areas of the wilderness.
