Aim: To describe how nurses and nursing students in Poland and the United States perceive the practice of intercultural care of refugees from Ukraine.

Background: Millions of Ukrainian citizens sought safety in other countries when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Introduction: Nurses in Poland and the United States are positioned to provide nursing care for refugees from Ukraine yet lack intercultural knowledge, skills, and attitudes to meet refugee needs.

Methods: This education-focused qualitative description study was conducted in Spring 2023. Eighteen MSN and BSN students from one university in Poland and one university in the United States completed an international virtual exchange course that concentrated on the health and well-being of refugees from Ukraine. Students' reflection papers generated the data for this study. Content analysis was used to systematically structure the data, and themes were inductively derived for an initial understanding of intercultural care for refugees. The COREQ guidelines were followed for reporting study findings.

Results: Major themes were troubled communication, overlooked trauma-informed care, and compromised vaccine status. Language differences, a gap in nursing knowledge, and cultural variations impeded intercultural care.

Discussion: To address intercultural care for refugees from Ukraine, macro- and microlevel factors should be considered. Healthcare facilities need certified interpreters or adequate language-access technology for nurses. Nursing programs might evaluate content on trauma-informed care and cultural competency to meet the needs of war-affected refugees. Leaders from Ukrainian refugee communities could partner with nurses to deliver culturally relevant information to increase vaccine uptake.

Implications: Nurses should advocate for inclusion of the WHO competency standards of care for refugees in healthcare policies with emphasis on communication and evidence-informed practice. Placing Ukrainian community leaders on health councils could bridge the gap between refugees and mainstream society.

Aim: The study aimed to determine the factors affecting psychological resilience, self-efficacy and job satisfaction in nurse academics.

Background: Nurse academics follow an emotionally and mentally intense career path, along which they are required to balance many different roles and responsibilities, including teaching, research and guidance. However, in some cases, this equilibrium is disrupted and may cause functional disruptions; in achieving this balance, resilience, self-efficacy and job satisfaction play important roles.

Methods: The data of this cross-sectional study were collected between January and April 2023, and 446 nurse academics were included in the study. The Descriptive Characteristics Information Form, Brief Psychological Resilience Scale (BPRS), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) were used to collect the research data.We adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting.

Results: A significant positive relationship was found between general self-efficacy levels and psychological resilience and job satisfaction levels. There is a significant positive relationship between job satisfaction levels and age, total years of service, psychological resilience and general self-efficacy levels. In addition, it has been noted that family relationships, friend relationships and academic title factors were effective on the nurse academics' psychological resilience, self-efficacy and job satisfaction levels.

Conclusion: Managers can play an important role in increasing the psychological resilience, self-efficacy and job satisfaction levels of nurse academics by developing strategies for these effective factors.

Implications for nursing and nursing policy: Governments need to ensure that nurse academics have an appropriate career framework that enables them to balance the competing demands on their time and that they have adequate mentoring and support in the early stages of their careers to enable them to adapt to working life as a nurse academic.

Aims: To investigate how nursing students' professional identity, clinical learning environment, financial incentives, and career opportunities influence their intention to migrate.

Background: There is a preponderance of studies about nurse migration and its impact on the global nursing workforce. However, a critical gap remains about nursing students' intentions to migrate, particularly among developing countries like the Philippines.

Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, third- and fourth-year nursing students (n = 316) from the largest comprehensive university in Manila were conveniently recruited. Data were collected from November to December 2023 using five validated self-report scales. Descriptive (e.g., mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics (e.g., Spearman rho, covariance-based structural equation modeling) were used to analyze data.

Results: The emerging model demonstrated acceptable model fit indices. Nursing students' professional identity (β = 0.18, p = 0.043) and financial incentives (β = 0.10, p = 0.046) significantly and positively influence the intention to migrate. The satisfaction with future career opportunities (β = -0.12, p = 0.038) and clinical learning environment perception (β = -0.15, p = 0.048) negatively influence the intention to migrate. These four predictors accounted for 4.60% of the total variance of intention to migrate.

Conclusion: Nursing students' professional identity and financial incentives directly impact intent to migrate, whereas future career opportunities satisfaction and clinical learning environment inversely affect intent to migrate.

Implications for nursing practice and policy: This study underscores the imperative for nursing colleges and faculty to promote positive professional identity and provide a conducive clinical learning environment to develop sustainable nurses' migration policies.

Aim: To determine the effect of nurses' perceptions of the effectiveness of nursing services management on their professional commitment.

Background: Effective healthcare management is crucial for improving patient care quality. Understanding nurses' perspectives on nursing services management and their commitment provides valuable insights for management strategies, improving well-being and healthcare outcomes.

Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational study involved 265 state hospital nurses. Data were collected between November 2020 and June 2021 using descriptive characteristic form, Nursing Services Management Effectiveness Scale, and Nursing Professional Commitment Scale. This study adhered to the STROBE checklist.

Results: Nurses' views on the effectiveness of nursing services management and their professional commitment were found to be influenced by age, professional experience, and institutional positions. The average scores for nursing services management perception and professional commitment were 2.65 ± 0.72 and 66.63 ± 12.40, respectively. A statistically significant positive and low-level correlation was observed between nurses' nursing services management perception and professional commitment scores. Nurses' positive perception of nursing services management explains 17.1% of the variance in nurses' professional commitment levels.

Discussion and conclusion: This study outlines how nurses' views on effective nursing services management can enhance their professional commitment. Managers should contribute to increase nursing services management efficacy by eliminating deficiencies in management practices to make their institutions successful and to increase their employees' professional commitment level.

Implications for nursing and health policy: Assuming positive perceptions of nursing management increase nurses' professional commitment, developing policies to boost organizational support is vital. Managers should focus on improving nursing services management to increase organizational success, increase nurses' professional commitment, and achieve the best health outcomes by eliminating management deficiencies.

Aim: To investigate gender differences in the actual and expected income among psychiatric nurses in China.

Background: Although studies have shown that male nurses earn more than female nurses in other countries, there are no published data regarding gender income differences among psychiatric nurses in China.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 41 representative psychiatric hospitals in China. Demographic, income, and job-related data were analyzed using the inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) based on the propensity score.

Findings: The sample included 9256 psychiatric nurses, and nearly four-fifths (79.3%) were female. Males earned slightly higher average monthly incomes than female nurses, while initial analysis showed no significant overall gender income difference (p > 0.05). Notably, most participants (92.5%) desired an income increase of at least 10%, with over half (56.2%) expressing significant dissatisfaction with their current income. After adjustment using propensity score combined with IPTW, females in the junior and mid-level groups had significantly lower income than their male counterparts (all p < 0.01), despite having different night shift patterns. However, there were no significant gender differences in actual or expected income among senior-level psychiatric nurses (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: A majority of psychiatric nurses in China express dissatisfaction with their current incomes and expect higher incomes. Male nurses earned significantly more than female nurses in the junior and mid-level professional groups, potentially due to their differences in night shifts.

Implications for nursing policy and health policy: Policymakers and hospital administrators should optimize the income structures of nurses and develop targeted policies to address the gender income gap. Improving nurse income has the potential to enhance motivation and satisfaction within the profession.

Aim: This study aimed to examine the level of work engagement and to identify the factors influencing the work engagement of nurses.

Background: Work engagement plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of outcomes and the standard of care in nursing and healthcare services.

Methods: A descriptive predictive design and stratified random sampling was used to select 206 nurses from three general hospitals in Naypyitaw, Myanmar.. Research instruments consisted of the demographic data form, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, the Global Transformational Leadership Scale, the Survey of Perceived Organizational Support, and the Psychological Capital Questionnaire. The results were explored by applying descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression.

Results: Overall work engagement was at an average level. Transformational leadership and psychological capital could affect work engagement, explaining 19.34% of the total variance; however, perceived organizational support, age, and work experience did not show any impact on it.

Conclusions: The findings recommend that nurse administrators should focus on transformational leadership and psychological capital in formulating strategies to increase nurses' work engagement.

Implications for nursing and health policy: The outcomes might provide baseline information for nurse administrators and policymakers by formulating management strategies to enhance nursing leaders' awareness, knowledge, and skills about transformational leadership behaviors and to keep nurses holding self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience of psychological capital in healthcare organizations, which ultimately increase nurses' engagement at work.

Aims: This study aimed to examine the relationship between emergency capacity, coping styles, and mental workload among nurses.

Background: Emergency capacity, coping styles, and mental workload are all variables associated with work. Identifying the relationship between these variables can facilitate administrators to implement tailored and effective intervention strategies to improve individual performance, quality of care, and medical safety.

Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was carried out to investigate 605 Chinese clinical nurses in seven tertiary hospitals by using personal information form, emergency capacity scale for nurses, simplified coping skill questionnaire, and the NASA-Task Load Index.

Results: Emergency capacity and mental workload were found at moderate levels. The multiple linear regression model suggested that spinsterhood, no children, high workload, always anxiety or nervousness, and lower monthly income were the influencing factors of mental workload. Positive coping style was positively correlated with emergency capacity and negatively correlated with mental workload. Negative coping style was negatively related to emergency capacity and positively related to mental workload. Additionally, coping styles played a partial mediating role in the relationship between emergency capacity and mental workload through constructing a structural equation model, but the effects of positive coping style and negative coping style are opposite.

Conclusion: Our results showed that coping styles played a mediating role in the relationship between emergency capacity and mental workload. Managers can alleviate the mental workload of nurses by cultivating positive coping styles and improving emergency capacity.

Implications for nursing and nursing policy: Mental workload of nurses deserves more attention in medical institutions. The results of our study provide evidence for improving employee health, promoting positive behaviors, and optimizing organizational management. Nursing managers should take feasible measures to fulfill nurses' needs for emergency capacity and coping strategies to alleviate nurses' mental workload, so as to stimulate their intrinsic motivation and positive organizational behavior.
