Studies on water resources are important to understand seed germination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological (germination) response of chia seeds and linseed to water stress. The seeds were placed on paper soaked in solutions of polyethylene glycol in diff erent osmotic potentials. Percentage of germination, fi rst germination count, and germination speed index were evaluated. The reduction of the osmotic potential of the substrate promoted a signifi cant decrease in the germination and vigor of the chia seeds and linseed. In conclusion, seeds of these species are not able to tolerate osmotic potentials equal to or lower than -0.15MPa, being making possible its cultivation areas with concentrations above osmotic potentials.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) support plant development, however, symbiosis depends on species of both symbionts. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between rootstock citrus inoculated with species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Three rootstocks citrange ‘Fepagro C37 Reck’ [ Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf. x Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck.], ‘Hong-Kong’ kumquat ( Fortunella hindsii Swingle) and ‘Trifoliata’ ( Poncirus trifoliate ) were tested, inoculated with two species of AMF ( Glomus etunicatum W.N. Becker & Gerd.and Acaulospora sp. ) and a treatment not inoculated. We evaluated the height (cm), stem diameter (mm), leaf area (cm² / plant), leaf number, fresh and dry root and shoot weight (g), the level of reserves in tissues and the colonization of AMF in the roots. The species G. etunicatum and Acaulospora sp . colonized the roots of rootstocks, but they were only eff ective for ‘Fepagro C37 Reck’. Poncirus trifoliata had the highest vigor in the absence of AMF.

This study aimed to quantify and elucidate the spatial variability of plant height and abundance of tillers and reproductive structures of the salt marsh grasses Spartina alterniflora Loisel. and Spartina densiflora Brongn. within and between pioneer ( 50 years of colonization) in southern Brazil. Both pioneer populations had taller tillers (p<0.01) than mature populations. Pioneer populations of S. densiflora also showed massive investment on tiller density (10,084 m-2), more infl orescences (557 m-2) and higher fecundity (16,258 seeds m-2) than the mature population (131 infl orescence m-2; 2,199 seeds m-2). High redox and reduction of phosphorus availability in the sediment away from the water line seem to explain decreasing densities of tiller and infl orescences inside S. densiflora mature populations. Fourteen percent of pioneer S. alterniflora tillers flowered and, on average, produced only 0.4 seeds per infl orescence and 76 seeds m-2, whereas mature population did not fl ower.

In this paper, we studied the pollen morphology of 11 species of epiphytic Cactaceae family in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. We provide descriptions, measurements, photomicrographs, as well as information on ecology and biogeography. The pollen grains are variable in size (medium, large and giant) with prolate-spheroidal to prolate forms; 3-colpate aperture ( Lepismium cruciforme (Vell.) Miq. and Rhipsalis cereuscula Haw.) and 6-colpate (remaining species); exine with tectum and small granulate texture and perforations; except for Epiphyllum phyllanthus (L.) Haw, colpi are covered by thin granulate membrane; heteromorphism in the apertures of L. houlletianum (Lem.) Barthlott, L. warmingianum (K. Schum.) Barthlott and Rhipsalis campos-portoana Loefgr was observed. Results indicate two morphological patterns in the study taxa: the fi rst (I) is related to pollen grains with 3-colpate aperture and second (II) with 6-colpate aperture

The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of cotyledon loss at diff erent times of initial bean growth. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme of 2x5, seedlings with zero and one cotyledon, interacting with fi ve extraction stages: zero, one, two, four, and six days after germination, with fi ve replicates composed of three seedlings. After 15 days, the following parameters were evaluated: mean root and shoot length; mean stem diameter; leaf area; total shoot and root dry mass; phloem and xylem diameter; and thickness of abaxial and adaxial epidermis. Removing cotyledons during the initial development of the bean plant infl uenced all the parameters evaluated in this work, except the mean diameter of the stem with one cotyledon. The removal of cotyledons in the fi rst days of extractions hinders the initial development of the plant, as well as making it more susceptible to the environment.

This study aimed to evaluate the phytotoxicity and allelopathic potential of hydrolats of Croton argyrophylloides Muell. Arg., C. blanchetianus Baill., C. jacobinensis Baill., C. nepetaefolius Kunth., C. sincorensis Mart. ex Muell. Arg. and C. zehntneri Pax. et. Hoff m. in the germination of diaspores of lettuce and tomato. There were daily observations and measurement of the standard test of germination (TSG), fi rst count (1a C) and germination speed index (GSI). The intensity of the phytotoxic activity of each species varied according to concentration, species and photoperiod. C. argyrophylloides , C. blanchetianus , and C. nepetaefolius were inhibited in all photoperiods. Some stimulating eff ects were observed for C. sincorensis and C. argyrophylloides . Nevertheless, the results of this study provide consistent indications of the allelopathic potential of tested species.

The edge effect is defined as the change of biotic and abiotic characteristics in the first meters of a forest fragment from the edge towards its interior. In fragments formed by human activities, this change generates increased richness and abundance, as well as changes in the structure of the forest species of soil seed bank in the border region. This study demonstrates that in natural fragments of cloud forests, the abundance and richness positively influence the linear relation from the edge to interior, mainly by distances of 120 and 180 meters from the edge. This effect can be a result of new plant growth, or ‘pioneer’ occupation in gaps in the forests generated by large fallen trees.
