his study aimed to determine the population structure of Cyathea praecincta (Kunze) Domin in an Atlantic Forest fragment in Northeastern Brazil. Individuals of C. praecincta were recorded inside 1800 m2 of interior forest area. Caudex height was measured in order to classify specimens into length classes and relate this variable with fertility of individuals. Ninety-eight individuals were sampled, featuring a low population density (5.4 individuals per 100 m-2) when compared to other tree fern populations. The spatial distribution was clustered (Ia = 2.12; p = 0.0002) and the length class distribution followed an exponential or reverse J-shaped pattern. The high number of individuals classifi ed in the smaller length class (0 to 0.25 m) may be an indication that the studied population is under expansion. This endorses the need for conservation of the study area and for reducing the risk of local extinction by disturbances.

Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil. is an arboreal species whose leaves are used in the preparation of mate and in the cosmetics and food industries. Due to diffi culty found in the sexual propagation of the species, this paper aimed to test effi ciency of indolebutyric acid (IBA) in saplings production from semi-woody cuttings. On the fi rst experiment, cuttings were taken from young plants, immersed in diff erent concentrations of IBA and established in substrate. On the second experiment, cuttings were established in four diff erent substrates previously submersed in IBA. A concentration of 3.0 mg L-1 of IBA and a substrate composed of biostabilized pine bark, limestone and vermiculite + carbonized rice hull, have shown a greater effi ciency in rooting of young I. paraguariensis saplings, and could be used to facilitate yerba mate propagation.

Lichens are an important element of the biodiversity of tropical regions, found in a variety of substrates. The Brazilian semiarid biodiversity is highly threatened due to land conversion for agricultural and cattle ranch. Until recently, only a few species had been reported from Ceara, the only State in Brazil covered almost entirely by Caatinga vegetation. The present work was carried out in Quixada and Quixera, in Ceara State, an area characterized by the presence of rock outcrops and inselbergs. As a result, 82 lichen species are here reported, from which 52 species are new records for Ceara, and 14 are reported for the fi rst time to Brazil. The great majority of species was saxicolous. This is the fi rst lichen inventory in this semiarid region of the state, and also the fi rst study to report a large number of saxicolous crustose microlichens in northeatern Brazil.

Canoparmelia pustulifera Benatti, S.M. Martins, Vos & Holt is a new lichen species discovered during a trip near Parque Estadual de Itapua, in Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil. The species is the second pustulate Canoparmelia species discovered after C. albomaculata , and contains perlatolic acid and several other still-undetermined medullary substances.

This study examined comparatively the plasticity of five “lenhosas” species occurring in two areas of salt marsh in Santa Catarina State, as follow: Clusia criuva Cambess., Myrsine venosa A. DC., Ocotea pulchella (Nees e Mart.) Mez, Pera glabrata (Schott) Poepp. Ex Baill and T ernstroemia brasiliensis Cambess . Functional attributes of leaf and stem were measured, and in the fi eld trees’ height and diameter were taken at breast height. The environmental heterogeneity was characterized by chemical analysis of the soil, thickness of litter and gravimetric moisture. For each morphological and anatomical attribute the phenotypic plasticity index was calculated. Leaf traits showed variation among the areas in all studied species, especially regarding specifi c leaf area. Wood attributes changed little, showing a higher inheritability of characters or similar responses to the water condition from the point of view of water resources’ use of. The results corroborate to other studies indicating that leaf is more plastic to habitats variations

The objective of this study was to describe and illustrate the morphology of fruits, seeds and seedlings of Psidium rufum DC. in order to assist diff erent disciplines, such as taxonomy and forestry. The species is a fruit that is not cultivated, but has great ecological potential. For structure characterization and germination stage descriptions, 100 units of random fruits and seeds of Curitiba and Ponta Grossa, Parana were used. P. rufum fruit is smooth, shiny, hairless, with a red-purple color when ripe, so globosa, fl eshy and indehiscent type bacoide. The seeds are campylotropous, reniform, with smooth, opaque and stony seed coat, and presented a possible endospermatic tissue and linseed in cream coloring. The embryo is of the pimentoide type and germination is epigeous phanerocotyledonal, starting on day 15 and extending to day 37. The morphological characteristics presented are useful in helping identify P. rufum.

Epilithic diatoms are important components of freshwater periphyton. This study aimed to describe the composition and distribution of the epilithic diatom community in thirteen sampling sites in the Arroio Grande hydrographical sub-basin, RS, between October 2012 and March 2013. Samples were cleaned in oxygen peroxide and mounted on permanent slides for identifi cation. The diatom fl ora was composed of 106 species in 23 families and 41 genera. The most representative families and genera in taxa richness were Cymbellaceae (12 taxa), Naviculaceae (11), Sellaphoraceae (10), Gomphonema Ehreberg (10), Sellaphora Mereschkowsky, Nitzchia Hassall (seven), Navicula Bory, and Pinnularia C.G. Ehrenberg (six). Morphometric data for each species are presented. The upper reaches of the river basin presented greater specifi c richness than the lower stretches. This is the fi rst record of the diatom fl ora in this hydrographic basin.
