When Robots Meet Artificial Intelligence: Let’s Do Better to Gain People’s Trust [From the Editor’s Desk] 当机器人遇上人工智能:让我们做得更好,赢得人们的信任[发自编辑室]

In a closed-door discussion that I attended recently, the award committee was debating whether to award the best student paper to a reinforcement learning-based robotics work with simulations using open datasets, or a robotics work using more traditional model-based methods with real robot experiments. Much more deliberation took place to reach the decision, and I’m not going to reveal which paper won the award, although, I must say both papers deserve recognition for being finalists in the competition. As a researcher who studied both classic dynamic model-based methods and machine learning-based methods to control robots, I have no bias toward either one, and I think the best solution for complex robotics problems may lie in better integrating of the two methods.

The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) is interested in encouraging students to play an active role in existing robotics standardization efforts. The RAS has multiple standardization efforts, which can be found at https://www.ieee-ras.org/industry-government/standards. To help encourage student participation, funds have been set aside to provide travel support to students interested in attending the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) (https://2025.ieee-icra.org/) in Atlanta, GA, USA, from 19 May to 23 May, where numerous IEEE robotics standardization meetings will be held.

Software engineering for autonomous robots investigates the synergetic interaction of computing and robotic technologies; this synergy is both realistic and strategic. On one hand, software engineering techniques and methods have the potential to enhance the quality of the software that controls autonomous robots and the effectiveness of software development processes in the robotic industry. In addition, they can provide evidence of that improved quality to foster trustworthiness of the robot via advanced verification techniques based on testing, simulation, or even mathematical proof. On the other hand, autonomous robots represent a significant benchmark for software engineering techniques and approaches, and many technologies that have been successfully applied in robotics (e.g., from control theory to automated planning) are now a source of inspiration for software engineers.
