The field of interest of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) encompasses components and systems operating in the frequency range from megahertz to terahertz. Specifically, MTT-S interests include the theory and applications of radio waves and guided-wave and wireless technologies (comprising nanostructures, devices, integrated circuits, multicircuit assemblies, components, packages, transmission lines, and subsystems) as well as systems involving the generation, amplification, processing, modulation, control, transmission, reception, detection, demodulation, and effects of electromagnetic energy transport. Additionally, they include the interaction and interface of microwave signals with digital and optical circuitry and interconnecting transmission media.

The IEEE International Microwave Biomedical Conference (IMBioC) took place in Leuven, Belgium, in September 2023. The event brought together academics and professionals in the field of microwaves for biomedical diagnostics, therapy, and other applications to connect and exchange information on the latest progress in the field. The event hosted 110 participants from 23 countries, of which approximately 40% were female. The (almost) complete gender equality in terms of the number of researchers and professionals at the conference, both in the organizing committee and among the attendees, was refreshing.

I joined what was then called the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society shortly after beginning my working career. Having been assigned a few RF and microwave development projects, MTT-S seemed to be the logical society for me to join. A few years before, as a student, I became an IEEE member. When I completed a master’s degree with a concentration in microwave engineering, it confirmed my decision to join MTT-S.
