Characterization of devices operating under large signal conditions at nonlinear regions requires specific measurement setups since the output power value, operation efficiency, power gain, and linearity are functions of the source impedance, input signal level, biasing values, and load impedance. Hence, measuring a device’s parameters while varying the source or load impedance (called source-pull and load-pull, respectively) is essential to evaluate its nonlinear behaviors.

The late Prof. Lester (Les) F. Eastman of Cornell University retired in 2011 but remained in Ithaca, NY, USA, until he passed away a decade ago. His career accomplishments were well known. For example, in six decades of his academic career, he graduated 125 Ph.D. students. There are good articles about him on Wikipedia and Memorial Tributes of the National Academy of Engineering, although they miss some key points. For example, they cite his APS Fellow Award in 2001 but fail to mention his IEEE Fellow Award in 1969 around the age of 40 shortly after being awarded tenure. Before that, when he was an assistant professor, he started a conference series on high-speed semiconductor devices and circuits and presented himself as a leader in the field. (It was renamed as the Lester Eastman Conference decades later.) Few people would have the guts to pull such a stunt so early in their careers.

The last decades have been characterized by an unprecedented explosion of global data consumption driven by an increasingly connected world and the emergence of new (BW) bandwidth-intensive wireless applications, such as close-proximity wireless data transfer, highly immersive virtual reality/augmented reality applications, and high-capacity wireless backhaul links [1]. As a result, an ever increasing demand for higher capacity communication systems has pushed innovation in the field of wireless communication at extraordinary rates.

Managing such a complex and multifaceted organization requires an efficient and motivated leading team with diverse skills, capable of long- and short-range planning in addition to communicating, coordinating, and executing plans.
