The articulation of anti-Asian sentiment in America: frames in BTS’ tweet and press release 美国反亚洲情绪的表达:防弹少年团的推特和新闻稿中的框架

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic has been considered being over, yet it remains to leave global traces of reaction including in America. This study aims at investigating Anti-Asian Sentiments in Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)’ Tweet and Press Release. Basing upon the curiosity of how the that particular sentiment spread in America and the reaction toward it from the perspective of the Asian. This study applies a qualitative method relying upon the data taken from an officially transcribed texts of short press the release video by Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)’ in YouTube as display in the White House website and Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)’ tweets posted to support Stop Asian Hate Movement. The analysis employs Huckin's Critical Discourse Analysis theory The results show that sentiment frames emerge in the forms of the violent attacks, discrimination, and the degradation of self-esteem. The existence of such sentiments has encouraged some reactions namely the awareness of Asian identity, the awareness of the rise of hate crimes, and the awareness of of supporting Stop Asian Hate movement. These findings implies that the BTS expressions language can act as an instrument of advocacy, power of negotiation, and expression of ideology. Thus, this study is significant for further studies on text analysis and rhetoric expressions, and cultural studies in general.

PowToon software’s impact on EFL students’ writing of narrative text PowToon软件对英语学生叙事文本写作的影响

The development of technology brings challenges for teachers to be more innovative and creative in delivering materials. Teachers need to explore currently medium for teaching. To assist teachers and students in overcoming their difficulties, PowToon Software was chosen. The goal of this study was to find out whether PowToon as a learning media was effective in improving the narrative text writing ability of grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Pegandon in the 2023/2024 academic year. This study used a quasi-experimental method. The sample consisted of grade XI 1 students as the control group and XI 2 as the experimental group. The control group and experimental group completed the pre-test and post-test. Data analysis in the study used SPSS. The results showed a significance improvement in students' writing achievement. This was evidenced by the significance value of 0.003. The value was smaller than 0.05 and this means that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. It can be summarized that the use of PowToon Software as a learning media was effective to improve students' narrative text writing ability.

The acculturation process of old Mrs. Pan reflected in Pearl S Buck’s The Good Deed 赛珍珠的《善举》反映了潘老太太的文化适应过程

Diaspora still becomes one of the big issues in sociological aspect. Acculturation has been relevant to the topic of diaspora. The issue raised in this study is acculturation process which is experienced by people who do migration by leaving their homeland to a new country caused by any condition happens in their homeland. This study attempts to analyze the acculturation process experienced by old Mrs. Pan in Pearl S Buck’s short story “The Good Deed”. This study applied descriptive qualitative method and several steps used in organizing the data; reading the short story, identifying the data, classifying the data, reducing the data, analyzing the data and finally the data analysis presented in descriptive form. In conducting this study, primary data and secondary data were used. The primary data were taken from The Good Deed short story by Pearl S. Buck published in 1953 and the secondary data were taken from journals, e-journals, books, e-books. In conclusion, this study found that acculturation process reflected in old Mrs. Pan as the main character. She experienced the acculturation process as she moved to America because of the conflict which happened in China. She faced the acculturation process in her movement to the new country such as acculturative stress and separation as one of acculturation’s strategy she encountered.

Piloting film-based intervention on santri’s perception towards striving for academic success: findings from Kampung Santri, Kudus Regency 以电影为基础的干预对学生追求学业成功的看法:来自Kampung santri, Kudus Regency的调查结果

This study is performed based on concerns that knowledge dichotomy in traditional Islamic boarding schools has not received the serious attention it deserves. In contrast to modern pesantren where santri receives both religious and non-religious knowledge, most traditional pesantren in Jekulo, Kudus regency only emphasizes religious knowledge as their core curriculum. Our preliminary study in 2022 suggested that the majority of student santri in Jekulo, Kudus regency showed unfavorable perceptions towards pursuing higher education despite being offered financial aid and academic mentorship. Our current task is to introduce film-based intervention and document its effect on santri’s perception change towards academic success. Although the use of film-based intervention to change perception and reduce stigma has been profound in the field of clinical psychology, its application in a nonclinical setting is still understudied. Using Social Comparison Theory (Festinger, 1954) as our analytical framework, we propose that historical film can be introduced as an alternative point of reference for our subject. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling (n=20). Pre- and post-studies are provided to document santri’s perception change toward striving for academic success. The results of this study confirm that film intervention can act as positive stimuli in the process of perception changes among santri by presenting relatable cinematic historical experiences as an alternative social reference. However, a lack of a role model and a shared perception toward academic success in santri’s immediate environment can hinder the process

Translation shift and the equivalence in children’s novel “The House at Pooh Corner” 儿童小说《小熊维尼角的房子》的翻译转换与对等

Translating literary works such as novels, poetry, short stories, and dramas is widely conducted in Indonesia to introduce literature to the Indonesian people. In translating literary works, the transfer of messages from the source language must be appropriate and flexible in the target language because literary works have their aesthetic function, so translators need to have a broad knowledge of the qualified sociocultural background. Translators do not only translate meaning but also translate the values of literary works such as moral value and cultural value. The role of translators is to find out the equivalence in the target language and use their creativity to solve the non-equivalence in the target text. Equivalence is the main concept to achieve translation quality. This study aims to find the type of translation shift that occurred in the translated version of the children’s book entitled ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ based on Catford theory and to analyse the equivalence of translation according to Popovic. This research is qualitative research which applies content analysis. The data was collected through documentation. It is found that there are level shifts and category shifts in the translated version of The House at Pooh Corner. In addition, the types of equivalence found in this research are paradigmatic equivalence, stylistic equivalence, and textual equivalence. This research is expected to be used as the material for students to understand more about shifts and equivalence in literary translation

Marginalized female in two song lyrics, Tragedi Cinta: textual-metaphoric representations 《悲剧Cinta》两首歌词中的边缘女性:文本隐喻表征

Old romantic songs of the 1980s linger; especially for people, at the moment, in their 60s or so. Such songs are rich in moral teaching, applicable in any religion on earth. The current study which examined Benjamin S’ and Ida Royani’s the same song lyrics Tragedi Cinta but of different versions aimed to construe the meanings of both songs viewed from their textual-metaphoric representations. The two song lyrics were analyzed employing a software application UAMCT 6.8, adopting Hallidayan SFL on thematic progression, leading to their modes of the discourse. Also dealt with herein is the use of both grammatical and lexical metaphors to examine how meanings are realized. The findings show that ‘female’ is marginalized in three ways, namely (1) the use of active voice without any attempt to hide the identity for doing sincere things as opposed to ‘male’ put in passive voice to hide the identity for doing bad things, (2) the use of marked themes indicate high literary values employed in both song lyrics, (3) the use of both lexical and grammatical metaphoric styles implies excellently-written song lyrics, and (4) moral teaching of both song lyrics is also highlighted to give evidence of ‘female’ marginalization and it is, thereby recommended to avoid romantic juvenile delinquency, especially of the millennial generation termed as ‘digital natives’ who can get access to abundant information without limit of time and space; no matter how hard the social, religious and familial authorities try to ban the negative impacts of the world’s largest information technology industry.

Such songs are rich in moral teaching, applicable in any religion on earth. The current study which examined Benjamin S’ and Ida Royani’s the same song lyrics Tragedi Cinta but of different versions aimed to construe the meanings of both songs viewed from their textual-metaphoric representations. The two song lyrics were analyzed employing a software application UAMCT 6.8, adopting Hallidayan SFL on thematic progression, leading to their modes of the discourse. Also dealt with herein is the use of both grammatical and lexical metaphors to examine how meanings are realized. The findings show that ‘female’ is marginalized in three ways, namely (1) the use of active voice without any attempt to hide the identity for doing sincere things as opposed to ‘male’ put in passive voice to hide the identity for doing bad things, (2) the use of marked themes indicate high literary values employed in both song lyrics, (3) the use of both lexical and grammatical metaphoric styles implies excellently-written song lyrics, and (4) moral teaching of both song lyrics is also highlighted to give evidence of ‘female’ marginalization and it is, thereby recommended to avoid romantic juvenile delinquency, especially of the millennial generation termed as ‘digital natives’ who can get access to abundant information without limit of time and space; no matter how hard the social, religious and familial authorities try to ban the negative impacts of the world’s largest information technology industry.","PeriodicalId":55748,"journal":{"name":"Edulite Journal of English Education Literature and Culture","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136037040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Critical discourse analysis of Fajriatun Nurhidayati’s Nyadran-Belajar Toleransi pada Tradisi 法吉拉图-努尔希达雅提的《尼亚德兰--在传统中学习宽容》批判性话语分析

Critical Discourse Analysis is a form of analysis that aims to reveal ideology, power, political attitudes, and gender. In this study, Critical Discourse Analysis is used to reveal the ideology and power contained in the language used by the author in Nyadran's book. Every discourse that discusses a topic of ideology and power always contains prejudice. This is what makes language expressions contain symbolic meanings. The critical discourse analysis that has been carried out in Nyadran-Belajar Toleransi pada Tradisi by Fajriyatun Nurhidayati can be concluded that to express ideology in a literary text, language cannot be placed in a closed manner. Nonetheless, the context within a literary text serves as a crucial factor in shaping discourse ideology. Furthermore, literary works are inherently intertwined with the author's creative circumstances, thereby rendering the interpretation of textual meaning inseparable from the employed language. Within this examination, it's evident that ideology in literary compositions and language itself defies rigid categorization, underscoring the significance of the contextual backdrop as a fundamental influencer on the ideology woven into the discourse.

EFL students’ readiness to have online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic among undergraduate students 在2019冠状病毒病大流行期间,英语学生对本科学生在线学习的准备情况

This study aimed to analyze the readiness levels of EFL students of the even semester of the English Education Study Program of Sultan Agung Islamic University to have online learning. This research was a descriptive study with a quantitative approach. The method used was a survey method. The data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire. Ninety-seven English Education Study Program students in the academic year 2021/2022 participated in this research. It was found that computer and internet literacy had a mean of 25.53, which was moderate. While self-directed learning was at a low level with a mean of 24.74, and motivation of learning was also at a low level with a mean of 24.41. It means that the students could use computers, laptops, and smartphones to complete course assessment tasks and facilities available on campus. It reported that students could not manage difficulty to present high performance on online learning to work independently. Besides computer and internet literacy and self-directed learning, motivation to learn was another factor that affected students' readiness. It found that during Covid-19, many students did not have high motivation to learn.

Comparing pedagogical competence performances of English and non-English educational background teachers in teaching English at an elementary school 英语与非英语教育背景教师在小学英语教学中的教学能力比较

Regulation of the Minister of National Education number 16 of 2007 stated that Teachers at the Elementary school level (SD/MI), or other equivalent forms, must have a minimum educational academic qualification of diploma four (D-IV) or bachelor (S1) in the field of Primary Education (D-IV/S1 PGSD/PGMI) or psychology obtained from an accredited study program. Thus, there are many schools that have English teachers from non-English educational backgrounds (NEB) rather than English teachers from English educational backgrounds (EEB). This condition will affect the quality of English teaching in Elementary schools. In order to evaluate further the suitability of government regulation regarding teachers’ criteria in teaching Elementary students, this study was to compare the pedagogical competence of English and non-English educational background teachers in teaching English at the elementary school level. The design of the study is qualitative research with a case study approach. The researcher took four English teachers consisting of two English teachers with EEB and two English teachers with NEB. This study used interviews, observation, and questionnaires to collect the data. This study used 10 indicators from the Ministry of Education, 2007. The results showed that from the 10 aspects, it can be highlighted that English teachers from EEB and English teachers from NEB have similarities and differences in implementing the indicators of pedagogical competence established by the Ministry of Education, 2007. It showed that the English teachers from EEB are more dominant in implementing indicators 1,2,8,9,10. Furthermore, the English teachers from NEB are more dominant in indicators 6 and 7. Thus, they have similarities in the rest of the indicators (3,4,5).

Students' motivation and engagement in the learning process of literature teaching using imaginative re-creation technique 运用想象性再创造手法研究文学教学中学生的学习动机与参与

This article investigates the influence of imaginative re-creation techniques on students' motivation and engagement within the context of literature teaching. Traditional pedagogical methods often struggle to maintain high student involvement in literature classes. This single-case research employed a mixed-methods approach combining observation and questionnaire data to assess students' motivation and engagement. A total of forty-five participants were involved in the study. Quantitative analysis of the questionnaires revealed an average level of motivation and engagement. However, a qualitative analysis of observations demonstrated that students exhibit a heightened sense of enthusiasm and engagement during class sessions that incorporate imaginative re-creation techniques. The findings suggest that while questionnaire responses might not fully capture the extent of students' enthusiasm, the classroom atmosphere is positively affected by the implementation of imaginative re-creation techniques. This implies that students' active participation and emotional connection with the literature are better reflected in their in-class behaviors than in self-reported questionnaire responses. In conclusion, this article highlights the complex relationship between students' self-reported motivation and engagement and their observable behavior during literature classes incorporating imaginative re-creation techniques. It underscores the need for a comprehensive assessment considering quantitative and qualitative data to understand students' educational experiences better. By integrating imaginative re-creation techniques into literature teaching, educators can foster a dynamic and engaging learning environment that goes beyond average questionnaire results and cultivates a genuine passion for literary exploration among students.
