The article deals with the issues of mother tongue-based primary education and teacher training in present-day Ethiopia. The theoretical study is based on secondary data (i.e., written documents) from various sources such as legal articles, constitutions, journal articles, and dissertations. It focuses on analysing the similarities and differences between the regional policies and the guidelines of the Ministry of Education regarding mother tongue education at the primary level, as well as the consistency of the regional primary teacher education programs with the guidelines mentioned. The results show that only the Oromiya region and Afan Oromo streams in the Amhara region are fully compliant with the federal policy as Afan Oromo is used as the medium of instruction throughout the primary level and first-and second-cycle teacher training programs. The Tigray and Somali regions are almost in line with the policy as they use the mother tongue as the medium of instruction for the 8 years of primary education. However, both regions have adopted English as the medium of instruction for the second cycle, although teachers will teach in the mother tongue. According to the secondary data, other inconsistencies exist in the Amhara, Dire Dawa, and Harari regions, as well as in the Amharic Streams in the Somali region. In Addis Ababa, mother tongue instruction has been completely eliminated from the curriculum for grades 7-8. Finally, least in line with a federal policy are the Gambella and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, where there is no mother tongue instruction in the second cycle of primary education, and Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz, where there is no mother tongue as the medium of instruction.

The main goal of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the acquisition of singular pronominal possessors (his/her) and gender agreement in third language (L3) English by first language (L1) Hungarian and second language (L2) Romanian learners and the extent to which animacy, task type and proficiency might affect it. The experiment is based on previous research by Imaz Agirre and García Mayo (2018), a comprehensive study on the acquisition of gender agreement and pronominal possessors in third language acquisition. This paper presents new findings by virtue of examining the third language acquisition of some agreement properties in the context of a novel combination of languages (L1: Hungarian, L2: Romanian, L3: English).

This second language study explores anaphora resolution by Tunisian Arabic learners of ESL. The aim of the study was to investigate if there are any intrusion effects and if second language proficiency has a direct effect on the time and accuracy of anaphora resolution. Therefore, an online anaphora interpretation task in different experimental conditions was performed. These conditions include manipulating the gender information of the antecedent or an NP distractor, where the anaphora might be temporarily distanced from the antecedent. The study results confirmed the intrusion effects of the multiple NPs in the test sentences. The Tunisian participants were distracted by the competing NP before ultimately selecting the right antecedent. Constructions where the inaccessible antecedent mismatched the reflexive did not constitute a problematic case of anaphora resolution. However, when the inaccessible antecedent gender matched the reflexive, the accuracy rates diminished. The proficiency of the participants showed a significant correlation with their accuracy of anaphora resolution. In addition, there was a negative correlation between the proficiency of the participants and the time of response. Based on these results, it is postulated that anaphora interpretation in the second language setting can be characterized by the intrusion effect, unlike the L1 context. The proficiency results are taken as a confirmation that L2 competence can directly affect the accuracy and the time needed to interpret anaphora by English second language speakers. Accordingly, teachers of ESL may consider the integration of pragmatic gender-related information in their syntactic curricula and train learners to handle gender cues in syntactically complex structures. Addressing the pragmatics-syntax interface in ESL curricula can be equally beneficial to intermediate and advanced learners.

In this article, I summarize and analyze the translation solution types applicable to Xiqu translation with reference to the classification of translation solution types proposed by Anthony Pym (Pym 2016: 220). This article not only refers to Pym’s classification but supplements it by exploring Xiqu translation, thus providing new and original insights. Through the case study, some sub-types specified by Pym are extended in order to make the translation solutions more relevant to Xiqu translation, e.g., shortening, linguistic amplification, supplying modality and corresponding body parts. Text tailoring is eliminated because this type does not exist in Xiqu translation, as such large changes in translation would make the listeners or readers misunderstand the text.
