: Highway is an essential facility that led to both economic success and quality of life. Maintenance is necessary to ensure that highway will able to continue to carry out its functions. The rutting of asphalt pavement structures during their exploitation is considered to be one of the main problems in the entire world. This kind of pavement distress makes a negative impact to the exploitation characteristics of the asphalt pavement to the residual life of pavement structure, also to the safety and quality of the traffic. The main purpose of this review is to define the effects of rutting on roads safety.

: Tyre related crashes accounted for 8.38%, 9.24%, 7.40%, 7.24%, 6.73%, 6.10% of total crashes on Nigerian roads in year 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively, making appraisal of conditions of tyres very crucial. Data on the use of tyres in the country are not available hence, the need to conduct a survey on this aspect. The aim of the research is to collate data to assess the conditions of tyres for informed decision on road safety. The objectives are to ascertain the level of awareness on tyre usage and identify the condition of tyres being used. Questionnaires were administered to private, commercial and government drivers nationwide by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). A total of 124,510 tyres on 30,242 vehicles were checked. Forty percent (40%) of the total tyres were expired out of which 44% were for commercial vehicles. Thirty percent (30%) of total tyres surveyed had correct pounds per square inch (PSI) as many of the tyres were either under or over inflated. Sixty-five percent (65%) of the tyres met thread depth of 1.6 mm while 8% of the tyres had bumps. Twenty-three percent (23%) of the drivers are unaware of tyre information. FRSC used this in developing strategies to educate the public on better usage of tyres.

Different studies conducted, regarding the development of statistical models used to predict crash occurrences along two-lane rural highways, around the globe and particularly in Ethiopia, rely on geometric characteristics than explicitly considering measures of design consistencies. Recently, the issue of geometric design consistency in highway design is emerging as an important criterion. This study is therefore carried out to evaluate the design consistency on horizontal alignments using measures of design consistency and develop safety functions that exclusively include design consistency measures. Elements of all road sections considered in the study were rated as good, fair or poor design using design evaluation criteria. Poisson regression and Negative Binomial regression modeling approaches were used to assess the relationship between measures of design consistency and road safety. Using information criteria goodness-of-fit, Poisson regression model was found better fit to the data than NB regression models. Three different crash prediction models which explicitly incorporate design consistency measures were successfully developed. The models can be used to predict crashes of two-lane rural highway having similar characteristics with the road considered under this study. Finally, based on the results of this research, further detailed study on effect of highway design consistency on road safety and current design guides related to design speed selection to account for design consistency revision was recommended.
