A New Accident Prediction Model for Highway-Rail Grade Crossings Using the USDOT Formula Variables 基于USDOT公式变量的公路铁路平交道口事故预测新模型

This paper presents the ZINDOT model, a methodology utilizing a zero-inflated negative binomial model with the variables used in the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) accident prediction formula, to determine the expected accident count at a highway-rail grade crossing. The model developed contains separate formulas to estimate the crash prediction value depending on the warning device type installed at the crossing: crossings with gates, crossings with flashing lights and no gates, and crossings with crossbucks. The proposed methodology also accounts for the observed accident count at a crossing using the Empirical Bayes method. The ZINDOT model estimates were compared to the USDOT model estimates to rank the crossings based on the expected accident frequency. It is observed that the new model can identify crossings with a greater number of accidents with Gates and Flashing Lights and Crossbucks in both Illinois (data which were used to develop the model) and Texas (data which were used to validate the model). A practitioner already using the USDOT formulae to estimate expected accident count at a crossing could easily use the ZINDOT model as it employs the same variables used in the USDOT formula. This methodology could be used to rank highway-rail grade crossings for resource allocation and safety improvement.

Mining Urban Congestion Evolution Characteristics Based on Taxi GPS Trajectories 基于出租车GPS轨迹的城市拥堵演化特征挖掘

The taxi GPS trajectories involve sufficient temporal and spatial characteristics and make it easy for us to obtain potential knowledge for understanding human mobility pattern and urban traffic network dynamics. Sensing urban traffic conditions not only enables traffic management authority to improve urban traffic management. It can also provide decision-making for residents and taxi drivers. A spectral clustering method is proposed for sensing traffic congestion using taxi GPS trajectories. First, taxi GPS trajectories are pre-processed and matched with the urban road network established based on the primal graph representation. Second, the average speed of the road segments is obtained according to the taxi GPS trajectories and a dynamic weighted graph of urban road network is constructed to capture complicated urban traffic network. Then, a spectral clustering method is developed to detect the urban traffic congestion. Finally, the congestion evolution characteristics in Lanzhou, China are visualized and analyzed during different periods in the weekdays and weekends. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect traffic congestion, and the results are consistent with the usual actual experience. Compared with other traffic congestion methods, the proposed method can detect urban traffic congestion with wider coverage and lower cost. Therefore, the proposed method can be integrated into the classic intelligent traffic system, assisting urban traffic prediction, personal travel route plan, route planning and navigation application.

Impact of flood depth on traffic volume in two different zones of the Bangkok road network was investigated using traffic data obtained from probe vehicle trajectories. A Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) was utilized to compare traffic flow rates across two road network zones in the city for a variety of flood depths, namely 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-15 cm, 15-30 cm, and more than 30 cm. Results of empirical analysis over an observation period of one year as 2019 showed that flood depths had a strong correlation with the MFD parameters of free-flow speed, maximum flow, and traffic jam density. In particular, road floods greatly reduced average maximum flow across the inner city road network in Bangkok. Road floods had a significant impact on traffic characteristics of urban road networks.

Performance of Recycled Ceramic Waste as Aggregates in Asphalt Mixtures 再生陶瓷废弃物作为沥青混合料集料的性能

Ceramic waste materials are abundantly available in Malaysia from the production of ceramic tiles. In general, ceramic materials seem to possess low thermal conductivity characteristics that could reduce pavement temperatures when used as aggregates in asphalt mixtures. A study was undertaken to look into the performance of crushed ceramics incorporated in asphalt mixtures to replace the conventional granite aggregates from sizes 5.0 mm down including the 75 micron filler. The replacement was done proportionally with 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% ceramic aggregates by weight of granite. Several mix designs with various percentages of ceramic aggregates were formulated to determine the marshal properties such as stability, flow, and resilient modulus. In addition, the potential of ceramic aggregates in reducing the asphalt pavement temperatures was also studied. The outcome of the study showed that the ceramic aggregates in the asphalt mixtures were able to improve the performance of the mixture up to 20% which means there is a great potential for the use of it in road construction. Besides that, the rate of heating (RoH) compacted samples subjected to various temperatures dropped significantly as compared with the control granite specimens. The fatigue performance of the compacted and temperature conditioned ceramic asphalt mixtures displayed an interesting trend in terms of strain resistance at elevated temperatures.

Design and Numerical Investigation to Predict the Flow Pattern of Non-axisymmetric Convergent Nozzle: A Component of Turboexpander 非轴对称收敛喷管流型预测的设计与数值研究——涡轮膨胀机的一个部件

Current work proposes a novel design methodology using curve-fitting approach for a non-axisymmetric airfoil convergent nozzle used in small-sized cryogenic turboexpander. The curves used for designing the nozzle are based on a combination of fifth and third order curve at upper and lower surface respectively. Four different turbulence model such as k-ε, SST, BSL and SSG Reynolds stress turbulence model is used to visualize and compare the fluid flow characteristics and thermal behaviors at various cross-sections. It is interesting to observe that the Mach number obtained at the outlet of the nozzle is highest and temperature drop is maximum for SSG model under similar boundary conditions. It is also observed that the designed nozzle with curve fitting approach is appropriate for impulse type turbine with a small amount of reaction. The key feature of this implementation is to obtain subsonic velocity at the nozzle exit and reduce the irreversible losses through the nozzle, which can affect the performance of a turboexpander.

Data Envelopment Analysis Model for Assessment of Safety and Security of Intermodal Transportation Facilities 多式联运设施安全保障评价的数据包络分析模型

Following September 11, 2001, numerous security policies have been created which have caused a number of unique challenges in planning for transportation networks. Transportation policy and funding to improve the transportation infrastructure has historically been addressed as individual modes not as intermodal transportation. As a consequence of this inopportune allocation, it is now apparent that the transportation modes are disconnected and have unequal levels of security and efficiency. Improved intermodal connectivity has therefore been identified as one of the main challenges to achieve a safer, secure, and productive transportation network. Tools need to be refined for collaboration and consensus building to serve as catalysts for efficient transportation solutions. In this study, a mathematical model using data envelopment analysis (DEA) was developed and investigated to assess the safety and security of intermodal transportation facilities. The model identifies the best and worst performers by assessing several safety and security-related variables. The DEA model can assess the efficiency level of safety and security of intermodal facilities and identify potential solutions for improvement. The DEA methodology presented is general in its framework and can be applied to any network of intermodal transportation systems. Availability of credible data, complemented with DEA methodology will help in management decisions making concrete safety and security decisions for intermodal transportation facilities.

Improved intermodal connectivity has therefore been identified as one of the main challenges to achieve a safer, secure, and productive transportation network. Tools need to be refined for collaboration and consensus building to serve as catalysts for efficient transportation solutions. In this study, a mathematical model using data envelopment analysis (DEA) was developed and investigated to assess the safety and security of intermodal transportation facilities. The model identifies the best and worst performers by assessing several safety and security-related variables. The DEA model can assess the efficiency level of safety and security of intermodal facilities and identify potential solutions for improvement. Laboratory Evaluation of Asphalt Containing Recycled Plastic as a Bitumen Extender and Modifier 含再生塑料沥青增稠剂和改性剂的实验室评价

: Recent interest in recycling and reuse of waste plastic has resulted in a dramatic increase in the evaluation of waste plastic as an extender and/or modifier of bituminous binder for asphalt production. Although significant field trials of waste plastic modified asphalt have been reported in Australia since 2017, no laboratory evaluation of the effects of these products on the engineering properties of binder and asphalt has been published. In this research, two commercially available recycled waste plastic products were evaluated in the laboratory. One product is intended to be plastomeric while the other is intended to be elastomeric in nature. Compared to unmodified viscosity grade bitumen and acid modified multigrade, the recycled plastic products increased the viscosity and softening temperature of the binder and introduced significant elastic recovery. Following dry-mixing into asphalt, the recycled plastic products were associated with improved mixture deformation resistance and increased mixture stiffness. However, the mixtures containing recycled plastic were also associated with an increase in moisture susceptibility and their fatigue lives were not significantly different to those of the control mixtures. Further research is recommended to better understand the modest reduction in moisture damage resistance associated with recycled plastic, as well as the digestion of recycled plastic via the dry-mixing process.

Investigating the Possibilities of Specific Crash Type at Roundabouts 在环形交叉路口调查特定碰撞类型的可能性

: A comprehensive analysis of road crashes is extremely supportive in identifying existing deficiencies and in proposing new the design strategies. There are several research studies carried out for improving safety at roundabouts with the aim to altering conflict types, reducing the drivers’ speeds and crash severity, and highlighting a considerable differences in the safety performance of individual or group of roundabouts. The main purpose in this study was to explain the correlation between the types of crashes to the geometry of the roundabouts based on data collected from ten top poorly performing roundabouts in Toowoomba, Australia. Preliminary analysis revealed the following as top three types as prominent at these identified roundabouts such as angle crashes (74%), hit-object crashes (13%), and Rear-end crashes (9%). Excess proportion of specific crash method has been used as methodological tool to estimate the potential possibilities for a specific crash type exceeding threshold at each roundabout. Results show that eight out of ten roundabouts were regarded for a particular type of crash but only two roundabouts were viewed for two types of crashes such as angle and hit-object.
