We present a monolithically integrated, individually addressable 2D VCSEL array. These lasers, based on InP, emit at 1.55 mum and provide, with 10 GHz modulation bandwidth at moderate biasing conditions, high-speed capabilities for optical interconnects.

We achieved a record high index sensitivity of 400 nm/RIU in a cw photonic crystal nanolaser with a potential spectral linewidth of 0.1 pm order. We also demonstrated spectrometer-free sensing utilizing nanolaser array.

We demonstrate a compact millimeter wave signal generator based on a phase-modulated laser and a dual-band fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Two optical sidebands of a phase-modulated spectrum propagate through two transmission windows temporarily open in a chirped FBG (CFBG) by inducing localized temperature variations. The millimeter wave frequency is tuned by the separate adjustment of each temperature profile.

Transverse mode conversion by second harmonic generation is demonstrated using focused axially symmetric, polarized beams with spatial variation of ellipticity. Superposition of higher order transverse modes of Hermite-Gaussian or Laguerre-Gaussian beams forms peculiar intensity patterns.

We measure the photon tunneling time through bandgaps of dielectric layer stacks with alternating refractive indices. We observe subtle structural changes in dielectric stacks drastically affecting photon traversal times, allowing for sub- and superluminal effects.

We experimentally demonstrate the wavelength conversion based on free carrier dispersion effect induced by non-linear absorption in a silicon micro-ring resonator. The pump and signal wavelengths are set by the split resonances spaced by 0.4 nm induced by deformation in the coupling region. The results of 500 Mbps and 1Gbps are presented.
