A 79GHz UWB pulse-compression vehicular radar in 90nm CMOS 90nm CMOS的79GHz超宽带脉冲压缩车载雷达

A 79GHz UWB pulse-compression (PC) vehicular radar system is presented. A PC waveform is a long pulse with internal modulation. The energy of it can be increased without raising the instantaneous peak power. Meanwhile, a PC waveform preserves an equal bandwidth and the range resolution associated with a single pulse waveform. In addition, the PC technique also allows multiple radars operating simultaneously based on the code division multiple accessing (CDMA). In this work, the internal modulation of the PC waveform is binary phase shift keying (BPSK) with a 31-bit length pseudo noise (PN) sequence. The modulation rate is 1 Gb/s and the maximum pulse width is 31 nsec. The CMOS chip presents a self-contained radar system with the transmitter, receiver, frequency synthesizer, and complete timing circuit fully integrated in a standard 90nm CMOS technology.

Load independent bulk-coupled low power quadrature LC VCO 负载无关的大体积耦合低功率正交LC压控振荡器

A novel low voltage bulk-coupled CMOS LC quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (QVCO) implemented in a standard 0.18 um BiCMOS process is presented in this paper. Quadrature signals are achieved by using injection of output signals of independent complementary LC VCOs into body terminal of each cross-coupled pair. Tapped capacitor technique is used to lower phase noise and achieve load independence. The implemented QVCO achieves a measured phase noise of −95.6 dBc/Hz at 50 KHz offset from 6.26 GHz carrier frequency. The total power consumption is 3.2 mW from a 1.2 V supply. The active die area is only 0.3 mm2. The achieved Figure of Merit (FOM) is −192.5 dBc/Hz and FOMA is −197.7 dBc/Hz which are among the best compared to recently published QVCOs.

Accurate extraction of coupling matrix for coupled resonator filters 耦合谐振器滤波器耦合矩阵的精确提取

More accurate and complete formulas are developed for extraction of coupling parameters of coupled resonator filters. It takes into account of coupling with frequency dependence and source/load phase loading. Impacts of resonator port impedance and position are also discussed. Examples, including a wideband comb-line filter and a narrowband dielectric duplexer, are simulated to verify the validity of the presented formulation. Results showed that the extracted coupling matrix (changes with frequency) has the same response with EM simulation. The new formulas enable more accurate and efficient design of coupled resonator filters.

Direct optimal synthesis of microwave bandpass filters with a general loading effect 具有一般负载效应的微波带通滤波器的直接优化合成

This paper presents a direct synthesis method for a general Chebyshev band pass filter that is matched to a general frequency dependent complex load. The method is based on the power wave renormalization theory and the characteristic polynomial representation of a filter network. By renormalizing the termination load impedance, three necessary conditions that stipulate the polynomials associated to a filter matched to a complex load and those related to a unity load are derived. It can be shown that these three conditions can lead to an ideal filter circuit model cascaded by a piece of transmission line between the complex load and the ideal filter. It has been shown that the length of the transmission line is optimal in the sense that the designed filter will best match to a given frequency variant load effect. The proposed method offers a deterministic yet flexible way for optimally designing a diplexer or a multiplexer with a realistic loading effect. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated by a design example of a waveguide diplexer.

Varactor-tuned dual-band filter with constant absolute bandwidth 恒绝对带宽变容调谐双带滤波器

This paper proposed a novel varactor-tuned dual-band filter with constant absolute bandwidth. It is composed of a pair of half-wavelength open-ended resonators and a pair of quarter-wavelength short-ended resonators. The resonators utilized two different methods to control the electric and magnetic coupling so as to achieve constant absolute bandwidth. A dual-band tunable filter is designed, and the measured results of the filter illustrate the effectiveness of this design method.

An efficient and simple approach to suppressing the high-frequency power/ground plane noise 一种有效而简单的抑制高频功率/地平面噪声的方法

This paper presents a new method to suppress the power/ground (P/G) plane noise commonly encountered in high-speed digital and mixed-signal systems. This method is based on modifying the conventional power/ground cavity model by utilizing the inhomogeneous medium in the power/ground structure. The usage of this inhomogeneous medium leads to the appearance of the nonconstant-coefficient first-order derivative terms of the model equation. These terms allow us to control and to change the geometrical property of the model solution if the coefficients are properly selected. We will show that by adjusting the parameters of the coefficient functions, the resonance of the structure can be completely eliminated. The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation for the power/ground plane structure demonstrates the effectiveness of the method.

An enhanced analytical Neuro-Space Mapping method for large-signal microwave device modeling 一种用于大信号微波器件建模的增强分析神经空间映射方法

In this paper, an advanced Neuro-Space Mapping (SM) modeling technique for nonlinear device modeling is proposed. By neural network mapping of the voltage and current signals from the coarse to the fine models, Neuro-SM can modify the behavior of the coarse model to match that of the fine model. The novelty of our work is to introduce a Neuro-SM model combining separate mappings for voltage and current and to derive analytical mapping representation to train the mapping neural networks to learn DC, small and large-signal data. Application examples on modeling MESFET devices and the use of the new model in DC, combined DC,S-parameter and Harmonic balance (HB) simulation demonstrate that our analytical Neuro-SM model matches more closely with the device data than that by the previous Neuro-SM method for modeling large-signal microwave devices.

Polarization friendly retrodirective antenna array 偏振友好的反向天线阵列

A polarization friendly rectrodirective array (RDA) is presented. The proposed RDA can receive any polarization and always retransmit the signal back to the interrogator with the predictable (orthogonal) polarization. This added feature can mitigate polarization mismatch loss and provide a more secure communication link. The proposed polarization friendly RDA shows excellent retrodirectivity for various received polarization states.

MEMS packaging for reliable resonators and oscillators 用于可靠谐振器和振荡器的MEMS封装

MEMS resonators have been discussed as replacements for quartz crystals in electronics timing applications for more than 40 years. There have been impressive demonstrations of many important characteristics for resonators and oscillators throughout the last 20 years. However, MEMS resonators had always exhibited unacceptable levels of long-term frequency drift. Recent work has shown that placement of MEMS resonators in high-quality packages can eliminate the sources of drift. The emergence of high-quality, low-cost packaging for MEMS resonators has enabled the first demonstrations of long-term stability and opened the door for commercial applications.

In this paper, the author describes the findings of his study of fifteen representative graduates of the University of Rhode Island International Engineering Program (IEP). The IEP program enables the students to earn a language degree alongside their engineering curriculum and involves one year of immersion study and professional internship abroad. The study seeks to define the long-term impact of the IEP experience on the lives and careers of its students.
